Same. I'm from the embedded system side and I've found this all very difficult to get my head around.
It makes sense, tho, when you realize that the definitions in the protocol are not instructions for programming a particular piece of software. They're descriptions of a basic technical idea.
The sort of thing we would create in the concept phase.
