Is there any script that parses my #CLN log and tells me how much I've lost on fees over the years? I can easily sum up my collected routing fees, but those sats spent on rebalancing, force closing, (bulk) opening are way harder to figure out. #lightning #Bitcoin #bookkeeping

lightning is a hot wallet. hardware wallets try to be as cold as possible. I guess there are tradeoffs that could be made, using watchtowers etc, but to me ln is what I use for every day transactions, and my hardware wallet is that guards my savings.

some of the protocols don't require trusted servers, but the picture you paint as the user locking you out is simply not true. I believe you offer a good service, but if users choose you under the impression of having sole access to the server/ram/disk/... it's just wrong, and that's what you are saying.

vps offer hardly any secrets from the provider. the ram is dumpable, the diskspace can be cloned on the press of a button, and network traffic is 100% visible (okay, tls here, but keys are known to hoster)
I'm all for self hosting, and a vps is a great start, but I can hardly imagine how you want to deliver on your promises. #opsec

running 170-250 channels on my CLN since years. I tend to it twice a year, reopen channels, update CLN etc.
I run a reverse proxy on my dial up connection at home, dyndns does exist.
the earnings a meager, but I honestly never calculated then. between FC and regular on chain fees.
but I can understand if people throw the towel. but then, we are still early in the game, things should get easier - and this is already happening.

just watched the presentation... lopp says there are gatekeepers, specifically those who manage IP addresses and domain registrars. I guess this can be argued, but this leaves hardly any decentralized system left. certainly Bitcoin core asks me what IP to bind to, and somehow fetches a list of IPs to connect to, too.
I manage and managed email infrastructure for many companies, certainly not the amount of daily emails lopp claims, but still a broad spectrum of different servers and plenty of traffic. i have never experienced emails being accepted and discarded on purpose by any mail system. the fast majority of mail that won't make it into the recipients inbox is usually blocked before even the body of the mail is transmitted or even the recipient was specified (DNSBL), thus leaving the matter to the sending email server. the consequences of false positives (legit mail being hell banned) would be grave, logs would show that the email in fact was delivered and it would be clear whom to blame for any legal consequences in most jurisdictions. I just googled those terms and also could not find anything about hell banning in smtp.
sure, the cost of running your own mail server is not zero, you need an IP and a domain and you need to invest some days from time to time to keep up with the development, configuring DKIM, which wasn't required before, but now many servers will reject unsigned messages etc., but that's just progress happening, it's not excluding anyone.
dynamically assigned IPs, unusually in dial-up scenarios are a real problem, I will admit that. but for me that's all that sticks from this presentation.

I don't disagree, but also try running old usb2rs232 converters on windows. they all need a specific driver and those might not be available for windows 10/11/whatever. just plug them on Linux and it just works. true for many device types

But why would you do that? What's the purpose of having 100% your-sided channels and not spending? To me it sounds like just putting some #bitcoin at risk :-)
If you run #CLN there are plenty of proper #backup solutions - on LND I guess you just have to copy everything during migration.
Just make sure to never start the old hardware again :D

also mesh central does a good job there.. but sadly all foss solutions fail to give customer friendly windows support (which is my primary use case) as the windows clients are not signed and thus throw warnings at the user. I guess one could fix that by acquiring a proper certificate and building the package on your own.. I did not find any good documentation on that :(

I believe a pi is a bad choice, as raid setups are difficult there. data integrity is difficult and backups only possible with #CLN as those have to be strictly realtime.

difficult. I had nodes not wanting to connect to me because I had too many FCs. thing is this is hardly my fault, I just operate a 'connect with anyone' policy. this of course leads to many rpi systems, tor-only systems often forcing me to FC, yet I believe as a peer my node is very low risk.

sure, no roi if you are not online, that's kinda obvious. but being offline is hardly connected to outdated channel states, this requires data corruption of some sort.
and the real risk of being offline (or Tor just not working at it should for some time due to ddos or whatever) is force closes, the bane of the lightning network. or your peer being offline, just as bad!

running a #lightning node creates those pesky small UTXOs constantly, and at a high price. I have like 0.5% of my channels force closing daily. this number is based on a feeling, didn't look it up.

the last 3 all share the con that comes with VPS, but you only list them for the first. can be mitigated by running on non-shared servers. even at home on a #raspberryPi if you feel like tackling the non-dialup-ip problem

just install #CLN (or #LND (or both)) and see where it goes from there 😎 hook them up to your Bitcoin node, nothing else is needed. a lot is optional thou. Tor, management web ui (RTL, thunderhub, sparko), grafama/Prometheus.
be aware that the profit will mainly manifest in wisdom, not in sats :D

I have two hw wallets. one is close to me, the other is as far away as I could manage. the pin is not documented, just memorized. passphrase are memorized & documented at different locations with friends/family. there exists a bank vault with my seed words on paper.

I disagree with this claim. in desktop OS usually all programs run in the user's context, hence they can access each other's data without much effort, unless the other program prompts the user for a password each time. in Android different apps are isolated from each other's user data. any windows malware can steal your wallet.dat. not so in Android.
of course the system itself has the required privileges, and privilege escalation is s thing. but there are also good reasons to prefer mobile from a security perspective.

if both are only used for the described purpose and physical security is out of scope I'd say both are very secure and would trust quite some value to them. for life changing amounts I'd always opt for completely offline.
also, depending on a lot of factors like FDE, key storage etc data might be easier to exfiltrate from a standard PC, but depending on the bounty that is meaningless.

not to forget: #LND can just do SCB, which requires cooperation and thus availability of your peers. this causes LND operators to FC channels with peers that are offline too long to minimize risk.
#CLN has real time backup, redundant databases and also SCB - as a last resort.

I ran both implementations for quite a while. both are good, but have different goals. lnd prefers stable fast and cheap payments, while cln puts much more focus on privacy, even if it means you might pay a few sats more.
lnd needs way more resources, but if you only manage a few channels, who cares. 200 channels on a routing node, certainly cln is better/cheaper. I also think bolt11, liquidity ads are superior concepts, but it seems everyone is happy with centralized liquidity markets (magma, ln+pool, ...) so idk.
user tooling is better on lnd, but cln allows deeper access for plugins. cln had better backup and redundancy options compared to minimal sbc of lnd, which requires cooperation (and thus availability) of your peers.
