we have a really cool local algo feed cooking at damus. in nostrdb we're building a feature called "local analytics" that stays on-device. local algos can tap into local analytics data to build dynamic feeds based on people and threads you've interacted with. cool thing about this is that its completely private and doesn't leak anything to the outside world. algos done the right way.

notedeck is a nostr development platform. we are building common functionality (account switching, subscription manager, database) at the "OS" level so that you can focus on building you app.
kieran is doing this with a rust version of zap.stream and is contributing common stuff back into the OS when he can.
it's becoming a nostr virtual machine and nostr dev platform. maybe a little crazy but it's pretty cool.

you can't really censor people here (if you're using a nostr client that connects to multiple relays like damus, amethyst, etc). All these relays are controlled by different people, so they would have to collude to censor. if that somehow happened (very unlikely), you could always run your own relay and clients will pull from that.

I think there's some confusion around this because of abuse of terms.
When people talk about data harvesting on other platforms its *insanely invasive*. Things like tracking every click you make in the app, your search history, tracking every piece of content you view and for how long.
Most nostr clients today have none of this. All people can collect are public actions that you have already consented to. nostr data is transparent so you know what you're putting out there.
Not to mention with giftwraps, relay group chats, encrypted group chats... we are beginning to hide a lot of this stuff.

instead of trying to constantly point this out all the time we are changing our focus to just promoting damus to technical users. I want to build tech for the people who appreciate nostr core values. this is still a large untapped market, and will allow us to focus on building value for those users instead of trying to compete with centralized features which won't be possible after awhile.

Asmongold (one of the top gamer twitch streamers) released a video the other day commenting on a video that broke down all the evidence that elon bought his top level hardcore PoE character. Elon is still maintaining this lie for some reason.

Why would devs do the hard thing and pour their effort into getting something working at the protocol level thats already available by some popular proprietary nostr app? Especially when they have the majority of the users and they are happy with the solution.
The very few people doing protocol dev will stop doing it. Users will be like: wow you got something working in a janky way which we've already had two years ago on NostrGram, who cares. It's becoming not very rewarding work.
You could have easily built zaps in a way that worked only on one app and all the users used that app because its an awesome feature. Building zaps was non-trivial and required lots of work between many different parties. It's sad we're moving away from this way of building things.

Prediction: to compete with proprietary nostr relays, others will have to build their own proprietary apis to deliver similar value. People will stop caring about interoperability and nostr just becomes isolated twitter-like islands just like before. Most clients then become light clients for these proprietary relays, and users lose control over which relays they can choose to talk to.
This is starting to happen today, how do we prevent this? VCs and people trying to make money won’t care about the hard work of protocol dev and interoperability, in fact, its in their interest to explicitly make it harder for other clients to have similar functionality via protocol improvements.
nostr could go down a very bad path very soon. Which way do you choose anon? Give up on the protocol for shiny new features? Or support less featured clients focused on interoperability? I suspect most will choose the former 😔

another benefit is that it will make nostrdb fulltext searches compatible with search relays. So local search will return local results quickly, and then network-wide notes will trickle in afterwards.

nip50 search support in nostrdb is going to be awesome.
right now our local fulltext search only searches everything. Having contextual searching on your home timeline, profile pages, etc will be much more useful.

even as optimized notedeck is network wise, I still notice subtle issue on the lowest bandwidth links.
one that stood out was that even though the data getting returned from the relay was really small, profile picture and media loading was swamping the link bandwidth and the nostr responses were just lost.
one change I'm making is QoS on certain requests. For example: ensuring nostr data is returned before we start loading media. This should work well on all connection types.
Lesson here is always be testing on low performance and low bandwidth devices (via android or iOS network link conditioners) if you want to create a good experience for everyone on the planet.

I am not convinced we are “in a race” against people building existing solutions. they are racing to the same demise as previous platforms. Some of us are building slowly and methodically to avoid the issues of the past. Ignore high time preference shortcut takers, let’s do it right.

This is the coolest and most advanced piece of software i have ever worked on. the amount of optimization and engineering that went into this thing is nuts. The beginnings of a nostr browser for all platforms, with p2p and bitcoin wallet capabilities built in.
You won’t have to be a bitcoin or nostr wizard to build the next 100,000 nostr apps.
A future where apps automatically interoperate with each other and have bitcoin+zaps integrated with zero fuss.
A future where users are in control of all their data across all the apps they use.
The only way this will happen is if making a nostr app is as easy as making a webpage with a few lines of code. That is the longterm goal of #notedeck, and we’re just getting started.

To do this i negentropy-synced down 600k notes and 200k zaps from the damus relay using a query across 300 active purple subscribers. This totalled about 700MB of data.
Then we used the new notecrumbs JSON api to pull down parsed notes and profiles which is used for rendering the note on each page.

have to put my relay operator hat on today and update noteguard to automatically ip block/timeout spammers who consistently hit the note write rate limit of 6 posts per minute on the damus relay. The ratelimit is fine to prevent a firehose of spam but some still get through. Would be nice to block it for good. There’s always some fire to put out 😮‍💨

notedeck multicast PR is up if any other native client dev wants to see how it works.
I really want to try this on an airplane, hopefully airplane wifi doesn't block multicast traffic, then anyone on the plane who has notedeck open on their computer could chat with each other, even without internet access. would be fun.

one of the goals is damus is that it will continue to work after I'm dead. adding more and more centralized integrations that just break is not a direction I want to go with damus.
saying that I don't care is oppsite from the truth, I care and want to do it the *right* way. one that actually makes sense for every user of damus, including japanese users who might not care about tenor memes. They have their own memes and gifs, having a nip94 gif relay would make way more sense in that context.
People upset that I'm spending development time on reaching the 80% of the nostr market (android users) over a gif keyboard, is kind of crazy to me. We can't even begin marketing Damus without an android client.
Donating sats does not mean you get to change the direction of our roadmap, if you want to do that, join our biweekly calls and tell us why your feature should be on our current milestone over the thousands of other things that need to get done.

In a local first world where each device holds local copies of your nostr nodes, and each device transparently syncs with each other on the local network, each node becomes a backup. Your data becomes antifragile automatically. When a node goes down it can resync and recover from other nodes. Even if not all nodes have a complete collection, negentropy can pull down only what is needed from each device. All this can be done without internet.

imagine you're offline on a plane and want to get a bunch of work done:
You open notedeck and:
1. update a bunch of calendar events
2. reply to a few DMs
3. send a few kind1 shitposts
4. you send a few code patches to nostr and mark a few nostr git issues as resolved
You open your phone, all these changes get automatically synced via multicast on the airplane's wifi (even if there's no internet connection). You continue working from your phone.
You land and connect to the internet, all your work during the flight gets synced to the internet.
nostr will just be a better place to get work done and to have fun in a completely decentralized, local-first way for all your apps.
this is how we win.
