All comments on this thread failed to suggest a decent note-taking app that isn't super convoluted.
I used Telegram as a way to quick jot notes for future use, reminders and whatnot, but I am trying to move out of that, so I started using https://simplenote.com/, but what a weird app. It logs me out if I don't use it for like 2 days, I don't like the fact that it has these titles because I don't need titles, I just need a place to paste content, and also it's not chronological like Telegram messages but also I can't reorder the notes as I wish, they are shown by most recent updated first, which is weird.
Anyway, all of that was ok if it wasn't for the weird syncing issues that started to happen recently: it takes sometimes hours for updates made in one device to be synced to other devices, I don't know, it looks like their server is broken or something.

I don't know why I'm writing this note anymore, but I think we could easily have a note-taking app with private notes writing to private relays on Nostr.

https://pinboard.in/ is a thing that would work great on Nostr: it's personal and social at the same time. You collect links that interest you and add comments for yourself, but with enough people doing that it creates a hivemind of potentially interesting content.
The only requirement is that it is blazingly simple and fast for managing your stuff.

We're just lacking more good content published as NIP-23 articles now -- or a way to find them.

I am not sure Nostr is the best way to achieve this, but if this is happening inside a closed environment you should probably do a bunch of normal events that update the internal state of that environment.

I honestly don't get what a publication is, in essence. If it's not curation then it is what? Is it like a movement by which various people are gathered and they all agree to write articles specifically to be published on that place? That would make sense.
If I am right about this then the relay specific for the publication is what makes more sense to me:
Considering an example on the internet of 20 years ago, we could have Bob and his blog at bob.blog and a publication at xfiles.pub. Bob generally writes about politics on bob.blog, but on xfiles.pub he only writes about the X-Files.
Normal Bob followers will naturally connect to bob.blog and read his politics stuff and never see his X-Files articles and X-Files fans will read Bob's articles on xfiles.pub and may or may not be inclined to look for other Bob articles on bob.blog.
Of course, anyone is free to copy-paste Bob's articles from xfiles.pub or from bob.blog and rehost them elsewhere without mentioning where they were taken from, but that is of little relevance to most users.

Do you really think it will be complicated to implement it with HSL and that people would get it wrong? Or what else do you have in mind? I think we can assume developers are capable of doing two math operations in order to get the standard implemented correctly, or that libraries will provide that functionality easily. If you assume they will get things wrong then the hex thing can be complex and people can get it wrong too, like you talk about dual colors, but I'm not sure what you mean.
Anyway, I understand that you're against having variants, but I'm not proposing variants. Or do you mean just 2 variants: dark and light? I don't know about that, I think we can go with a single color, but if we want most clients to adopt this we'll have to give them nice colors. More discussion is needed and two competing NIP proposals should be opened.

Your argument seems to be mostly that "I have already done this way, therefore this way is better", which is a valid argument, but not very convincing to anyone else who hasn't implemented it. You act as if doing it with HSL was very hard when in fact it is a change you can do in like 1 minute.
I wasn't talking about indistinguishable colors, I was talking about many of the colors being actually just black, and your example seems to corroborate that. Of course I don't have the counter-example of how your gradient would look like if it was done using the HSL scheme, so I can't even say if it would really be better, I just tend to think it would, but I won't push any further.
In any case, please open a NIP proposal with your scheme if you care about standardizing this.

Well, you're drastically downplaying the importance of picking good colors.
Another important thing is that if I'm not mistaken if you pick a random hex number there is a very very high probability it will be indistinguishable from black or some colorless shade of gray.

I think just helping users recognize previously known accounts that have changed names and pictures is already a very good thing, or to visually distinguish them in the middle of a feed scroll and other similar use cases.
Of course the color can't be relied upon to combat impersonators.

Then anyone who has mined a 000000 key will look the same and will be black.
Also purely random hex colors will wield some quite ugly colors.
An HSL scheme with some reasonable preset range limits is almost guaranteed to yield nicer colors. See https://github.com/supercrabtree/hashbow for example.

A Nostr client with no concept of "follows", you just get shown some content from selected relays, then if you like -- or if you read (your local client would know by your clicking or how much time your spent on each thread, no one else) -- that person gets added to a dynamic ranking of possible interests, so you start to softly "follow" them (by which I mean the client fetches their notes specifically from their relays). As you interact with new notes and new people that dynamic list changes.

@npub1acg…p35c sometimes when I visit a specific profile that I follow, like @npub1u3j…q7na for example, it displays posts from many days ago, then only after a blip of 2 or 3 seconds it displays the latest notes.
Is that because Gossip has only fetched these latest posts at the time I clicked on the profile? Shouldn't it have downloaded these posts naturally in the background and put them in my feed?

Oh, one way you can remedy that is by building an nprofile code for the person you want with the desired relays and adding that instead of just an npub.
You can do that easily with https://github.com/fiatjaf/nak -- nak encode nprofile (nak decode npub1... | jq -r .pubkey) -r relay.damus.io
Or with https://nak.nostr.com/ -- paste npub, click to add relay hint below (include the wss:// prefix).

Yeah, good point. But what are these npubs? Aren't their kind:10002 relay lists not available? Sometimes people are s̶t̶u̶p̶i̶d̶ unwise and add thousands of relays to their list, we only try some of those. The next time we try we'll likely try different ones as internal outbox estimations change (see https://how-nostr-works.pages.dev/#/outbox for a glimpse of how that's done).

What does it mean to "just subscribe to a pubkey" anyway? It means connecting to the relay or set of relays that pubkey has chosen and downloading events from there.
In this case subscribing to a custom relay is different, but not completely different, in practice -- but I grant you we have no way to do this seamlessly currently in any client -- except perhaps Nostur.

Well, what is a publication anyway if not centered around a brand and a special infrastructure? And censorship concerns are diminished in this case as you're already running your own server -- moreover a publication already "censors" by its own nature, since it doesn't accept articles from anyone.
The special relay approach doesn't prevent anyone from linking, tagging or replying to the publications themselves from other relays, that's the beauty of Nostr indeed and it wouldn't be lost.
