Aesthetics are difficult. I personally like Element X UI a lot. But I found that when converting people over the years that the WA and Telegram UI's are generally liked, Signal is a bit bland and SimpleX used to be rated clunky. The appearance together with ease of onbaording/discovery is a big part of the acceptance users will have

Yeah, I read that too. The problem again though is that we can't actually tell what any of those things are doing and Google has been caught getting more data then stated many times over. While I doubt it's a solution just to deinstall this as suggested, it doesn't change that there is no privacy on Google phones, or any of their other crap either.

ditto:relay PostgresError: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "nostr_events_new_pkey"
Could that be the reason? (latest in git today)

Snowden recommended and used Signal long before SimpleX existed. In that time you had less options and Signal was probably the best.
But their quiet single line warning on safety number changes and many others are alarming, more so for users who don't understand it either.

I think we should be clear about what each app can do for you. And Signal is hiding it's flaws as well as holding back sources, that breeds distrust.
Secondly, we are all just one step away of being criminals. I will never forget that visiting my parents was a crime in 2020/21 or that heat seeking drones where used to find Belgians who locked down in their summer homes instead of primary residence. So their government should be in everyone's threat list, on the top and I don't trust Signal against that.

That is not true. Traffic analysis can be done at AWS which also has way too much metadata at this point.
Your criticism of centralization while a point puts SimpleX at worst in the same boat as Signal without being able to identify you and with options to only use .onion. But that point is invalid as there are increasingly more servers and I run a set of them myself.
SimpleX is not perfect but I don't see any area where it is worse then Signal (security wise).

Signal is OK and a huge trade up from spy platforms like WhatsApp or unencrypted crap like Telegram. But if you fear targeted surveillance or wish to communicate anonymously, trade up to SimpleX.
I dislike them holding back source code and not being upfront that usernames just hide phonenumbers in the stock app.

That is not true. SimpleX is decentralized so there is no place where all group memberships are stored. Traffic analysis won't work on that.
