What's happening with Gossip?:
Implementing NIP-46 support in gossip has been far more difficult than I expected, at every step of the way, to the point that I've become dejected. I'm primarily motivated by progress and currently I am demotivated by my lack of completing anything useful for the end users, and have become too easily distracted to the point that I think it would be fair to send some bitcoin back to OpenSats as a refund.
For a long time there was a rust compiler bug around lifetime erasure ('_ vs '0) of data sent across async points. But I noticed that wasn't happening about a month ago.
Then all the signing/encrypting/decrypting functions needed to be made async, which bubbled up to more and more code needing to be async.
Then I went ahead and defined a Signer trait implemented by anything that could sign things... but that had too many functions (NIP-46 only does some) so it had to be broken up into 3 or 4 traits over time.
Then I built an Identity which could be any of (None, PublicKey, PrivateKey, RemoteSigner), and also a gossip client identity that wrapped this. And it had to be Serialize/Deserialize to save it.
Then I needed a network-level Client that a nip46 signing client could utilize to communicate with it's remote signer, without being tangled up in the "minions" I currently have.
Then I needed the nip46 signer itself that uses this Client and implements Signer, plugged into Identity and Serialize/Deserialize.
Then I needed to migrate how your identity loads and saves to this new serialized Identity (instead of just keys as it used to be).
Then there were lots of bugs around where detection of whether you could sign things or whether things were unlocked was being done wrong.
It starts to work... you can connect to the signer and you can learn your public key, and you can then get a feed. But it quickly gets jammed up and gossip freezes.
So now I think I should use tokio_console to debug it, which requires me to instrument lots of code.
And I'm just so tired of this.

Screening for early forms of disease can lead to good outcomes (if they found something important) but also bad outcomes (found something, not sure, let's operate!). It is a tricky business.
There exists the possibility for overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. And some studies on screening have found that some kinds of screening actually statistically lead to worse outcomes due to these... that the damage done by misdiagnoses exceeds even the damage of the disease they were screening for! And so in those cases the case was made not to do such screenings.
There is also that false sense of security you get when you have a clean bill of health: "it is okay for me to eat more cake and finish this bottle of wine because I'm still healthy." It may be better if you didn't know you were healthy.

Initial report on pumpernickel: Wow. Most satiating food I've ever experienced.
When health food promoters say food X does Y, I don't generally dismiss it, but I don't put much weight upon it. Usually such effects, while statistically significant, aren't actually enough to make much practical difference. Or it doesn't work on me. Even if the food promoter says something like "four-fold" I still don't generally get excited about something.
So it was with "fiber" and "gut microbiome", and in particular "rye". Supposedly rye has a lot of resistant starch and digests much slower, especially whole rye, and feeds your gut cell walls with short-chain fatty acids which have a long list of supposed health effects. I read (or heard) that some of these effects including reducing your appetite for high-energy foods.
In a post I made about a week ago, I baked 2 loaves of pumpernickel bread. Not for health. Just to try it. These loaves are massively dense, completely unleavened, but remain moist enough to slice thinly and they apparently never go bad (can store in a tin as emergency food). Note that there are variants of pumpernickel that are leavened and do not have quite the same properties... I'm talking about the stuff with no bubbles, just packed dense slow-cooked whole rye kibble.
On the first day of eating this, I probably went in too much at once and it roughed my guts. But I kept eating it at low levels anyways since I had no other bread in the house.
As of today I'm not even half way through the first of these 2 loaves. I've had no other bread or wheat-based product other than this bread. And what has happened has kinda shocked me: I'm not hungry for bread or carbs. I'm eating less than normal. And I keep getting up and doing things, even without the drive of being caffeinated. I've lost some weight, but not a lot yet, but really the appetite supression or let's say the satiety that this bread provides is unbelievable... I would not have believed it had I not experienced it myself.

My cache folder is using 34G. My lmdb folder is using 4.3G (I prune it, it has gotten up to 12G or so). It could be either.
The local database doesn't just store events. There are lots of other records.

Many states started issuing REAL ID compliant IDs way back in 2008 or 2010. I don't know state-by-state if maybe some states dragged their feet. Just look for the star on the upper-right.

Real ID:
In 2005, the US congress passed legislation for this, and it comes into force May 7 2025. It requires states to follow certain practices when identifying and giving somebody an ID. All the drivers licenses issued in all the US states and 5 territories qualify as real ID. If you have a recent valid drivers license, you arleady have a Real ID. The new requirements will be that to fly domestically, visit certain federal federal facilities, and to visit nuclear power plants, then you must show your Real ID.
I don't think this is much different than it already was, is it?. I don't ever recall flying domestically "anonymously". The significant difference IMHO is that ID is becoming federalized (states still issue, but federal government oversees).
For myself, I'll use my passport as always.
You can still travel without ID by driving in your car. I would be much more worried if your country went cashless. In that case you have to use trackable payment mechanisms to buy your groceries. Here in NZ most supermarkets still take cash, but most checkout lines do not... you have to find the checkout line that still takes cash. I think they still have to take cash, but they just aren't setup for that at every checkout line.

Yesterday was weird. I kept thinking I need to check on the dog in case she needs something. I went to her grave like 6 times even though logically I know she's not going to wake up and need me. My brain just kept prodding me since she has needed me so much for so long now (even to walk to do her business) and it felt like I was disloyal if I didn't sit by her grave.
Today the wind was blowing heavy, the winds of change.
Everything I rest my eyes upon in my house and outside, it seems like I'm seeing it for the first time. I actually think about what I should do about that thing -- clean it, move it, etc -- things that haven't caught my attention in years.
And all the "dog stuff" is being cleaned and packed into a big "dog stuff" box.... collars and leashes, toys, medicines, dog bowls, dog bed.
I did sleep last night, but today is still not normal. I'm getting through it.
I did even get some nostr work done, I finally got an annoying problem sorted, but the details aren't worth talking about.
In a way, as much as I loved my dog, she was really holding me back. Taking too much of my time. Taking far too much of my expenses for medicines and operations. I couldn't travel anywhere. My ability to focus deeply (needed for the kind of programming I do) had slowly deteriorated for a long time due to the interruptions she needed and also the ones she didn't. And so had my sleep deteriorated, especially near the end (turns out she had a lot of nighttime activity I didn't know about and needed me to pick up and hold up her rump so she could get to the places she insisted on smelling... at multiple times during the night... else the barking wouldn't stop).
It is just very different now without her, and I'm adjusting. 😢

I like long ferments too, but never really got results that were outstanding enough to warrant the long process.
A Detmolder three-stage sourdough rye is a long multi-day sourdough process. I used to try to make that back in 2006 when I found samartha.net (site doesn't seem to be up anymore?).
I also tried a 3-stage to try to imitate Lionel Poilâne's famous 30% spelt boulle. I did that one a lot back then. Also did my own 85% extraction flour, except it was never fine enough so I gave that up. Even now I can't get flour fine enough with a home mill. Zentrofan mills do it though, and there is one in town.
I also once bought the intstructions for making authentic SF sourdough (Boudin, Larraburu), but I was disappointed as I don't think they work without the right flour and the right magical starter, and maybe you have to be in SF. But it was a very long ferment, enough to destroy the glutens of normal flours, and very touchy too or you either didn't get the sour flavor or your dough overproofed. But I did get that classic flavor and chewy crust once or twice, great for a breadbowl of clam chowder.

I quit after 12 hours because I had guests and needed the oven to cook for them. It was supposed to go for 24 hours. So I think it is slightly gummy but shouldn't be. Also I should have used coarser grain, I didn't realize it should be cracked so coursely until I noticed this in a reputable video from Germany.
But it slices thinly and tastes like pumpernickel. I'm happy with the result and I'll do better next time.

That is what I imagine too. When it comes to politicians there are many ways to control them, either via dirt, or payoffs, or other things.
But I'm not so sure it is applicable to this crazy conspiracy conjecture that popped into my head. I think more probably they just are signalling loyalty to their in-group.

I just butchered the shoulder of a lamb tonight trying to follow the standard way of doing it by wathcing youtube videos on it. I had 2 lambs hanging, now I have about 1 1/2 lambs hanging. What I wanted to note down is that doing it the standard butcher shop way is kinda dumb, it is a hell of a lot more work than the techniques I kinda worked out for myself over the years. All the bone sawing is nuts. If you have a band saw it's probably a good method, but if you are using a hand saw it's stupid to try to make the official standard butcher shop cuts because you will be putting in a lot of work and I fail to see the benefit of it.
What I have always done in the past is like this:
* Saw off the neck. That part is not different.
* Cut each front leg off of the body by circling around the shoulder cartilage, keeping all that cartilage on the leg piece. Nuckle the leg shank (folded in) by cutting into the knee joint and breaking that joint, sawing where necessary. This is a *long* bone-in roast that might not fit in some people's ovens or roasting pans. In that case you can just cut off the shank entirely and debone the leg entirely and wrap it up like a boneless roast.
* Fliet out the entire back straps as long lean meaty boneless pieces.
* If the chest was not cut in two when evicerating, then cut it in two now.
* Cut both rib sections off, leaving enough ribs on the spine part for what you want to do next. Usually I cut the ribs into two sections just to fit them all into plastic bags.
* The spine part can be band-sawed into "lamb chops" but only if you didn't cut out the back straps. With the back straps gone, I consider the spine part to be waste. Trim any usable meat and toss the spine.
* Cut the legs in half at the tailbone, separating the tailbone triangle piece out. I don't have a use for that tailbone piece so I trim off the useful meat and give it to the dog.
* Back legs are usually kept as giant roasts, with the shank knuckled in. But you can cut steaks/chops off of the thick part on top so it won't be so big, or even dice the whole thing for cubed lamb.
As I watch youtube videos on this, I notice most of these are small young animals, lighter pink colored flesh, small. I usually work with darker fleshed older larger animals.

I'm making pumpernickel bread for the first time. As follows:
12g salt (sea salt chunks, they are a bit dingy coloured, not processed much)
750g cracked rye (organic, I cracked it)
770g boiling water (bore/well water, no chlorine or fluoridation)
[I'm doing two batches. One batch also has caraway and fennel]
Rest 16 hours
350g cracked rye
Mix well and pack into a greased loaf tin
Cover with parchment cut to size to drop into tin
Cover top with aluminum foil
Bake for 115 C for 24 hours
Remove, let cool, wrap in plastic, and wait a day

Execution of summary judgement without judicial oversight is bad. And that isn't the only problem.
Worse is that this administration is blatently ignoring the courts. Apparently all you have to do is call them "activist judges" and you get to ignore them. So when the courts issued a stay on their deportation, the administration ignored it and deported anyways. And when the courts issued an order to bring them back into the US for trial, the administration pretended they had no power to do this (even as they pay El Salvador to keep them).
Worse is that they have criminalized speech, and are executing summary judgement in these cases too. Of course it is because the Israel lobby has their balls in a sling. How else can they suddenly be against free speech? I can't believe they are making such decisions willingly. And that is even worse, that the US isn't operating under the rule of law, it is operating under the rule of Netanyahu.
If I still lived in the US I would be getting the fuck out first thing.
The left warned about Trump being a fascist, and I didn't believe them. I thought they had TDS. But I guess I was the one with a blind spot.

Here is my take on free will. I hope I can explain it well enough that people understand.
For a long time I have not seen the contradiction between a single fixed future and free will.
The universe is four-dimensional, time being a dimension (though a very different kind of dimension from space).
The future only unfolds in one way. Each decision you make leads to one future, it does not split the universe into multiple futures. You can only choose one future. Therefore only one timeline exists, the one that we all travel on into the shared future that we all experience.
But we all have free will. We all make decisions that affect the present and those affects determine the future.
Some people take the logical step that if the universe must unfold in the one fated way, then we do not have the freedom to take a different path.
But this is incorrect. We do have the freedom to take a different path. We just don't do it. Because of who we are.
Fate isn't something outside of you that you are a slave to with no free will. YOU are the fate that is making the one true future. Or rather, you are a part of that fate, and you have perfectly free will.

The Next Big Idea in News Media
People hate the news. Because not only do they get some small facts wrong, explanations even more wrong, but the normative context and word choices belie a belief system that huge numbers of people disagree with.
News media tried to solve this problem by reporting "just the facts" without any contextualization, choosing the most neutral words they could. You might think that would be the perfect news that you would want to get your news from. But it is not. You will find it boring. The viewership numbers of that kind of thing plummet. It is far better to give the *wrong* context and infuriate you than to give no context.
Well, what if you could give a personalized context to everybody? With A.I. now we can. We can have "just the facts" neutral news fed into a personalized (or group personalized) A.I. which contextualizes the news for you making it interesting again without infuriating you, and IMHO people will *trust* this news far more than what they currently get.
What do you all think? Should we take this serious, fund it and set it afloat?

#politics Nothing terribly contentious below... just a clarification.
Within the pro-Israel and pro-Palestine groups of people, sometimes I find that they are both wrong.
I hear from pro-Israel people that "there is no state of Palestine. There never was." to which I hear from pro-Palestine people that the state of Palestine existed for thousands of years and Israel stole it.
There is a region called Palestine that has existed for thousands of years and been called Palestine (Palestina) since at least the Roman times.
But the people of that region have either never, or almost never, been under self-administration. Rather, other larger powers controlled them: Currently Israel, before that Britain, before that the Ottoman empire (Turkey), before that the Mamluk Sultanate (of Egypt), and various empires before that (Ayyubit, Fatimid, Abbasid, Roman, etc). And so a case can be made that there never was a sovereign state of Palestine, but rather that Palestine is a region that was always under the control of some other sovereign state.
But it is also true that despite who controlled Palestine, the region was locally populated primarily by ethnic native Palestinians without much displacement or dilution, and the local regions (Haifa, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Gaza, Nablus, and Beersheba) were controlled locally by these Palestinians, under the authority of a higher sovereign power.
But since 1988 Palestine has declared independence, and right now 147 out of 193 member states of the UN (over 75%) recognize the State of Palestine as the combined region of the West Bank and the Gaza strip, as well as East Jerusalem. It is a NEW thing, recognized for the purpose of resolving the conflict. Israel and the US do not recognize it -- from their perspective Israel is an aparteid state. From the perspective of countries taht do recognize the State of Palestine there is a war between Israel and Palestine.
These very different perspectives confuse dialogue about the issue, even though none of these facts is really very contentious.

Keep your work surface clean. It helps to feed it some syntax sugar to keep it energized. The last thing you want is for your compiler to give up and throw an angry fit.

Yeah I hate where Mozilla went. But when using the web stack, I don't like the others either. I'm really less and less interested in the entire web stack. I think it has become hyper complex, and that is not a good thing.
Of course I still use the web. But when I make technology I try to avoid it. It's not necessary for new technology.

Long ago the US government wanted to put a "clipper chip" in everybody's computer. This chip would encrypted traffic (wasn't common at the time) but witih a backdoor so that law enforcement could see your data.
Later NIST recommended Dual_EC_DRBG encryption that suspiciously could have been constructed with a backdoor, and later evidence from Snowden indicated that it probably did have this backdoor.
Also the P curves (P-224, P-256, and P-384) were constructed with numbers that are unexplained and could weaken the algorithm if you know the secret of how those numbers were chosen.
Chrome and Firefox do not support ed25519 in TLS, but they do support the P-curves.
I suspect TLS isn't secure against the NSA unless both sides are using algorithms that the NSA can't break, which in the browser HTTP world is hardly possible.
ed25519 isn't the only algorithm with nothing up it's sleeve (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing-up-my-sleeve_number) but it has become the most popular and is quite efficient.
In the rust world, if you control both endpoints, you can use a more trustworthy TLS like https://github.com/mikedilger/alt-tls If you don't control both endpoints, the TLS will probably fail to negotiate a secure algorithm.

Yes, China doesn't want to go to war with US. My brother asked me "why do they dare threaten the US, don't they know how unreasonably violent we are?" and my answer was "all they are doing is getting richer. They are not intending any threat" to which he said "that's a good point." Of course there is a military build up, but I see that as a reaction to threats and unclassified plans of the US.
As for the WEF, the whole "you will own nothing and be happy" was a futuristic idea like Star Trek where nobody owns anything but everybody has everything... kinda like the historic idea of communism. There would be a bunch of community self driving cars and you could have one at your front door immediately and go anywhere you wanted without owning a car, without having to service a car, without bothering with insurance, without the headaches of ownership. Some people would prefer that and the WEF thought everybody would prefer that. But people just interpret that one slide as "we are taking your shit, and you had best just be happy that we didn't also kill you." But they didn't mean this at all and the meme is getting kinda tired. This is NOT to say I agree with the WEF, I think they aren't very smart and they are far too much about centralizing power. But also, luckily, I think they are totally ineffective.
And no I disagree that Trump's tariffs have anything to do with the WEF. Neither was the vaccine. The vaccine was in response to the secret knowledge that the virus came out of weapons reasearch, which panicked all the leaders into over-reacting. If the military tells you this was a weapon and the antidote hasn't been created yet but we have the plans for how, most leaders will just believe that and push to make the antidote.

I think Trump wants to rebuild American manufacturing at any cost, because the USA is going to need it when they are at war with China and can't buy things from China anymore.
He isn't trying to hurt trading partners. He isn't trying to make American's poorer. But those things are also consequences. Big costs.
The fact that he is willing to pay such big costs leads me to believe that the US actually intends to go to war with China. Why is that important? Beats me.

I believe free trade is a win-win situation. Our sellers sell in larger volumes, and our buyers buy at cheaper prices.

I will look into how these events are arriving. In the mean time, your inbox switch set to "Replies & DM" will avoid including events just because you were 'p' 'tagged and only include (and notify) of events that are direct replies to your events (or which mention you in the content).
Gossip has been rather sloppy around the rules for getting events because I've been trying to work with other clients that don't do outbox. I've erred on the side of fetching too much, rather than too little. But it is time to tighten it up a bit.

I hadn't seen that before. It is associating a sequence of keys with the same identity leveraging a bitcoin wallet identity. And it piggybacks on bitcoin's blockchain for distribution.
But you could make that same association using a master key (in the place of a bitcoin wallet key), and piggybacking on a signed DHT record that specifies your subkeys and/or IP address(es) (in place of the inscription).
There is more than one way to skin a cat.

I'm kinda unsure if I should move on my ideas. After all, if we break everything is it nostr anymore? I don't think so. And if it isn't nostr anymore, will OpenSats want to fund me anymore? I'm kinda jailed into sticking with nostr if I want to keep that sweet sweet funding. At least I need to stick to what I proposed I would do.
But yes I do have a lot of breaking ideas. As it stands, those ideas keep piling up. If I had "started over" 6 months ago I would have been doing it wrong. I think it might be better to just keep piling them up and doing small experiments with them, and thinking about them for some time, before actually forging ahead with it.
For example, the other day I was explaining CRDTs to a friend/colleague in town and in preparing what I was going to say on the drive over, I realized that follow lists with CRDTs aren't enough, we still need to avoid simple race condition clobbers per-server: https://github.com/mikedilger/nostr-next/issues/55
For example again, I was thinking about still using websockets, but now I think building directly on QUIC is better and the HTTP and WebSocket layers don't buy us anything we want (what they give us, like proxying, is actually against good security practice). Because QUIC has to work for HTTP/3 to work, there wont be middle-box routing problems.
I also recently did https://github.com/mikedilger/alt-tls where I got TLS running with ed25519/x25519/blake3 in ways browsers suspiciously do not support (even though the RFCs do), with modern crypto that didn't come from the US government. Interestingly I can't get secp256k1 working because of this stupid thing: https://docs.rs/rustls-pki-types/latest/rustls_pki_types/alg_id/index.html I don't know what the pkix algo identifier is or if there is a reserved area I can use.
A quick summary of other breaking things I'm interested in:
* Framed binary protocol over QUIC, not WebSockets, not JSON
* ed25519 signatures, not secp256k1
* Device keys that can be rolled over, the master key used only for managing device keys (and the DHT).
* Learn a person's relays from Mainline DHT
* Relays/servers have a pubkey and use it in their TLS certificate, so we don't need to trust DNS.
* In-protocol feature negotiation
* Mechanisms to avoid all possible clobbers
* All event kinds are default replaceable, but see the application layer to determine how the application specifies it
* Separation of application layer from the main protocol, avoiding proliferation of NIPs.
* Nodes (clients/servers) remember timestamps when records arrived, which bounds when the record was created, giving better idea of what to do regarding revocation and such
* Spans within content marked in 'tags' e.g. (start=13, end=18, bold) or (insert=56, url=SOMEURL)

I believe the USA needs to repeal laws regarding posession of child porn. Not because that stuff is ok... it's sick. Creation of child porn should remain illegal. But because it is being used as blackmail to steer politicians into acting against the interests of the United States.
I think this issue is far more important than immigration, the economy or tarriffs. It is only surpassed by issues of war.
It has to be driven by the people. Politicians are coerced so they won't drive it.
Of course the "moral signalling" is totally backwards... it looks like an issue only perverts would support.... which is why the USA probably cannot be saved and will collapse into a smoldering heap of evil.

I don't think we should have multiple ways because (1) it adds complexity, (2) it adds overhead (have to check them all), (3) things get out of sync. The DHT thing is a neat idea but nostr already has an effective solution without it. And the nostr.json relays came about before kind 10002 did, and maybe even should be retired, because mine keeps falling behind and getting out of sync.

Torrent was designed over fixed large data. I'm not sure what would happen if the dataset you are syncing is constantly changing.
I think using mainline DHT to bootstrap a pubkey's relay list is a cool idea. But we instead just spread these relay lists out on the current popular relays, which works well once you've been using nostr for a while and your client can easily figure out which relays are popular. DHT would be better for people starting cold though.
