Gotta admit that working outside and feeling the warm sun on my back in the PNW in *January* is kinda nice.

Last fall I planted several lettuce varieties in a raised bed just to see what would happen. So far the coldest we have seen is about 28 degrees. When that happens the lettuce plants have some frost but have not died. Unless it gets colder I am thinking that when the days get longer the plants will grow nice new leaves and we will not be buying lettuce for a good long time.

Flickers have started sending out looking-for-love messages by beating on the house chimney cap.

Going to wait until the sun has melted the frost off the deck railing before shifting to outdoor chores.

I am posting this on Tuesday morning. The shaded areas on the map show NOAA’s data for the likelihood of excessive rain on day 2 - i.e. Wednesday. Per NOAA, the colors mean as follows:

Pink shading = High (High) [At least 70% Chance of Flash Flooding] - Widespread flash floods are expected. Conditions include severe widespread flash flooding. Areas that do not normally experience flash flooding have conditions where lives and property are in greater danger.

Red shading = Moderate (MDT) [At least 40% Chance of Flash Flooding]- Numerous flash floods are likely- Numerous flash flooding events with significant events are possible. Many streams may flood potentially affecting large rivers.

We have been growing Yukon Gold as the main potato crop in our garden for many years. Last year I bought certified Yukon Gold seed potatoes at a local nursery. Other years I have planted our own potatoes to grow the next crop. We grow them in raised beds with solid sides. I think that growing them this way helps to maintain even soil moisture and avoid most of the hollow center problems.

I like to buy new seed potatoes each year (1) to avoid possible disease carry-over and (2) since I get to go to great nursery - Flower World near Maltby WA. But if they do not have Yukon Gold seed potatoes next year then I will plant some of this year’s potatoes and see what the options are when 2027 rolls around.

I searched for info about evacuation and found this passage on p21-22.

“An east wind event that coincides with a wildfire could push embers directly into the urban areas of King County, a situation which would be dangerous and even life-threatening. This could cause unprecedented destruction to our communities, though such a fire in and of itself is not unprecedented – it is a known feature of our local fire regime. Rapid evacuation is likely the only option for immediately protecting communities in a high-severity, east wind driven fire. 12. Because major high-severity fires occur infrequently, people in higher-risk areas may not realize just how vulnerable they would be to a destructive, wind-driven wildfire. Lack of awareness can lead to lack of preparedness, low interest in mitigation, and taking inadequate precaution with potential ignition sources – the opposite of actions that are needed to become a fire-adapted community.”

What about giving the user the option to display the numerical accuracy value? The GPS chip in mobile devices produces the accuracy value in meters. Of course that would be easy to convert to feet.

Perhaps your documentation could point out the relationship between the location coordinates and accuracy value. If a circle is drawn using the coordinate as the center and accuracy value as the radius then there is supposed to be a 95% likelihood that the device is inside that circle.

The marker on this map is at Camp Mystic on the Guadalupe River, Texas. This is where many children lost their lives in the flash flood. The dots on the map are clickable federal streamgages. Note that there are no streamgages upriver from the camp.

If there had been a federal streamgage upriver from Camp Mystic then any savvy iOS or Android developer could write an app that lets the user input the unique ID for that gage and then sound an alarm if the water level at the gage increases by a certain amount.

Edit: It looks the the federal government has (or at least had) an app to do just this.

Most government web maps that display GIS data use ESRI software. That software makes a zillion calls to the ArcGIS server in order to do anything. Think 'bloatware'.

Actually that started out as a potato filing system and then expanded. The onions and shallots are in baskets so it is easy to bring them in to an unheated room in our house if winter temps are forecast to be mid 20s or lower.

Got onions?

My turn to cook tonight so I just cut up a bunch of vegies and have some soup starting to simmer. 5pm here in the #PNW, cloudy and barely 60 degrees. So, yup, still soup weather.

The Patterson onions we grew last year are still keeping fine in our unheated garage. I read that it is good to store onions in the dark so they are in an old metal file drawer which has lots of small holes drilled in the sides for ventilation.

After getting a couple of onions for tonight’s soup there are still 6 left. And if we happen to use all those before the first Walla Walla onions are ready this year, then a different file drawer has some large Davidor shallots that are also keeping fine.

And speaking of Walla Wallas, the ones I started from seed last fall in our mini greenhouse are doing fine. We should be able to start using those sometime in July. Also in that same raised bed are small Walla Wallas that were started this year.

The good news is we finished eating supper before the power went out. More good news - it is not raining so I did not get soaked as I wheeled the generator from the detached garage to its operating position under the deck. All the essentials are now powered up.

Based on the the Puget Power outage map I suspect the local substation lost power. The wind did not blow that hard and the are not that many outages. We will see what the morning brings.

Near Redmond WA we are starting day 2 with no power and no Comcast cable internet. I can get online via cell tower early in the morning but rarely get online later in the day.

Likely another couple of days till we get power. Unknown how long Comcast internet will be down.

We are on generator power and have city water and gravity septic. Wife and I are warm and fed. Spent all day yesterday picking up and burning branches. Life is good.

The screenshot is a map I recently produced for a client who is trying to find their existing survey stakes. My service produced the red lines based on the client’s survey. The bluish lines are from the county #GIS.

Look at corner 6.

Many counties have an online parcel map with a long disclaimer saying their data is not intended to accurately locate property lines. Apps such as LandGlide, OnX and many others show you a copy of the county GIS parcel line data. If the county data is bad then the same data in those apps is also bad.
