My 2019 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Core i5, 8Gb RAM, 13” screen, 4 Thunderbolt ports, Touch Bar) now running an iFixit (npub1ulc…x3hg) replacement battery (today’s project) has done me all the service it needs to.

It can’t update macOS any higher than Sequoia 15, but will certainly happily continue to do that or run some flavour of Linux such as Linux Mint (npub1l38…ky3k). The Touch Bar has the blinkies when at rest, but works.

I have the original box and power supply to go with it.

If you cover postage and the cost of the replacement battery kit (AU$200), I’m happy to send it to you anywhere in Australia.

So, I’m one of the people Microsoft has been forced by the ACCC to email in Australia to offer a downgrade on their O365 Family subs (I'll eventually convince my family we don't need it) because they hid the option to take a version without CoPilot.

However, when you click on the link in the email to downgrade, rather than going to a page where you can do that, you go to a page where you are offered a new subscription to a single-user-only version.

Parsing the URL it goes to, it's pretty clear how to figure out what it *should* be, and you can complete the downgrade by changing the url to https://checkout.microsoft365.com/acquire/purchase?language=en-AU&market=AU&requestedDuration=Year&scenario=microsoft-365-family-classic&matchDuration=true&campaign=M365ClassicDowngrade&upsell=false

I’m fairly certain this is not what the Commission intended.

I'm trying to figure out how best to do them, principally for the non-tech people of the house.

As an example, we have some Google cameras and a doorbell I don't have the money (or reasonable excuse) to replace. The Google Home app will happily alert a user on seeing vehicles, known faces, or unknown faces, packages, and notify the doorbell has been rung. Some, but not all of these things are exposed to HA. Enough that I could replace Google Home for almost all meaningful circumstances.

I'd like to replicate and replace that functionality as closely as possible in HA, with alerts to phones, a voice assistant, and on a dashboard. I'm a touch short on time and can't find someone who's done it on Reddit or the HA community, so I'm trying to figure it out slightly blind.

The previous doors were interior slatted cedar. Great for your sunroom, not so good exposed to the weather. They were coated with years of repainting.

The new doors are exterior pine framing with 90mm merbeu decking stiles. I’ll be adding some fine fly mesh to the inside of the doors to reduce dust and leaf blow-in.

We've been watching episodes of the ABC's Take 5, hosted by Zan Rowe, as an after-dinner entertainment. I find them terribly interesting, especially when the artist is very open and clear about the meaning of the songs for them.

I've been wracking my brain to come up with five tracks that I would offer up, and I just can’t; I listen to a lot of music, but very little on deep repeat, or that's anything other than musical enjoyment for me.

The are *two* tracks I can say move me, though:

1. Nightwish’s “The Greatest Show On Earth” from their 2015 album “Endless Forms Most Beautiful”. It's a 24-minute epic tracing the history of the universe from the Big Bang to the decline of humanity and that which comes after. It's typical Nightwish storytelling at its most incredible with Tuomas Holopainen and Marko Hietala's composition supported by the entire band, and Floor Jansen's powerful vocals reciting the tale. Do yourself a favour and watch the live performance as the closing encore at Tampere in 2015.

2. Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman performing “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammys. Combs has covered this song for many years, and looks up to Chapman as one of his inspirations. It's clear in the video who admires who; Combs is giddy with excitement at being there with his hero. Further, Chapman's voice has lost nothing in the more than 30 years since the song was a worldwide hit for her.

I think it also goes to root cause. The problems with social media aren't actually problems with social media. They're problems with society: toxicity, bullying, tribalism, and so on.

But too few people in politics bother to ask “but what's causing *that*?” and delve deeper to look for both causes and possible answers.

It's a failure of connected/systems thinking because they're both incapable of it, and applying bandaids makes you look like you're doing something. They're less than an inch deep and not even wide.

these people are old of mind. It's a problem in parliaments and councils everywhere in this country (and I suspect globally). Hopefully they get replaced soon. Replaced by more folks like you, like David Pocock, like AOC, like Greta Thunberg (sorry for the weirdly wide brush there). Modern progressives with intelligence, heart, the willingness to listen and to learn, and the nous to understand what used to be the way isn’t necessarily the way now. They suffer from the same mindset as conservatives who long for a fantasy past where things were “better" (they never were).

We've signed off on the last two of the major renovations at our place this week, and work on them should begin *before* the end of the year with a chance of completion, too. They're the two big environmental lifts:
- double glazing of the entire house
- solar (11kW) and battery (24kWh)

It'll be interesting to see the difference in a year.

We're very fortunate to be in a position to do this.

Get mad at a system that encourages the accumulation of wealth (housing) by funding that accumulation through debt and tax write-offs. Do something about *that*.

Get mad at a system that doesn't require enough housing be available to all income levels. Get mad at the absence of rent control and allows runaway rent profiteering. Get mad at rental agents encouraging rent bidding. Get mad at the absence of very long leases that allow people to know they have a home for 5-10 years or more.
