A selection of photos of my 22" and single (so far) 14" MPC/Round 2 Eagle kit builds.

The Metamorph Edition: A kit in waiting. Although this is just a kit of Eagle 1, a survey pod and a spine booster, all of which have already been released, it does contain some extra parts. Being a completist I just fell into Round 2's trap.

Who is this who is coming?

Well its almost Samhain and thoughts turn to all things creepy. I dug out the BBC Quatermass and the Pit tv series the other night to indulge myself in my favourite sci-fi serial, with Andre Morrel as the eponymous Prof. Probably some of the best TV series ever made, considering it was originally broadcast live. Another firm favourite for me is the 1968 Omnibus programme, which ran Johnathan Miller's depiction of the classic M.R James ghost story 'Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You'. It a simple tale of hubris and academic bloodymindedness, with Michael Hordern playing a stuffy professor, on a weekend retreat in Norfolk. The Prof actively decries all supernatural activity as nonesense, declaring that all things can be explained away as science. However, during a brisk coast walk, he finds a clifftop graveyard, the internments being gradually eroded by the elements. On inspection, he discovers a strange artefact, which soon changes the Professors worldview on the occult.
Its something I have seen many times and will see again, as it is due to be screened in a small local cinema, along with a reading of the original story, just before xmas. The effects are spare and basic, but amazingly effective and the landscape in which was filmed, really lends itself to the story. You can watch it on You Tube here:
Whistle and I'll Come To You (1968)
Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the Jurassic Coast and spent some time fossil hunting near Weymouth. Whilst this is a good distance from Norfolk, the spectacular gravel beaches and rolling yellow cliffs really put me in mind of the story, especially the scene where the Prof journeys home along the beach at twilight and glimpses a mysterious figure. I took a snap myself of a figure on the beach, as it was eerily similar. The coast is spectacular and very photogenic. The Durdle Door sea 'cave' was featured on the recent second series of 'The Sandman'.
Another great folk horror favourite is the more recent adaptation of Andrew Michael Hurley's book 'Starve Acre'. Starring Matt Smith, it is a bleak tale of supernatural and occult practice in the remote corners of Yorkshire. In style it is very reminiscent of Nigel Kneale's TV series 'Beasts'. It was recently available to watch on BBC iPlayer, and well worth a viewing, especially on these dark autumn evenings..

Battle of Britain Bubblegum Cards

Hi Woodsy,
Mickey’s Toy Room is a fairly new You Tube channel, covering toys and memorabilia. In this episode he looks at various tie-ins to the film Battle of Britain (1969).
I had no idea most of these items even existed. The main focus is on a series of 66 Bubblegum cards by A&BC Chewing Gum Limited, in England, using photographs from the film, or its production.
The same set was also sold in Australia by Scanlen’s Goblin Sweets Pty. Ltd. This is well worth a look.

These bagged knockoff figures appeared on auction this Autumn. All very rough and highly collectable. You'll see Mego and similar parts and clothing chucked in there. A true mash-up of mad rip offs. Where else would you find Apes of War!
Most are pictured in the Knockoffs book I have, which is a very readable reference guide.

Grab Your Callander! Project SWORD in Scotland!

John Hunter, The proprietor of the Hamilton toy museum in Callander, Scotland, kindly sent me some snaps of the space toy display. I've never been, so it's always good to see some Project SWORD displays in public view, of which there can't be that many in the world. The glass doors are screwed shut so these are the best shots John could take ( for more views see the museum website).
For context here's a bigger Anderson display shot I found from a visitor on Tripadvisor.
Via John, Here's a Probe Force 3, a true staple of the Project SWORD fleet and cloned voraciously!
Next to it is this lovely JR21 Rocket Transporter, which some of you may have.
To the right is a nice Space 8 atop a SWORD Dyna Soar box, one of my favourite SWORD vehicles and based on a real NASA design.
If I'm not mistaken the strange grey orb to the left is a Mechanoid. Is that it's ladder?
Further along is this wonderful grouping including a JR21 SPV ( Terry recently showed us his Bandai version), a Century 21 Angel Interceptor and above, a blue Excavator, which appears much bigger than I thought it was.
The Captain Scarlet group of tall figures I'm unsure about. Anyone?
Perhaps the rarest item in the Anderson display is only partially visible. It's the SPC at the rear and it's the box that's rare and ..... maybe the only one known?* (* One is pictured on Worthpoint as having been sold on eBay years ago but my guess is it's the same one as the Hamilton).
We've seen this SPC before, identified first in that display by Graeme Walker of Canada, whilst browsing Facebook no less and subsequently pictured again courtesy of the Hamilton museum 11 years back and wonderfully close-up: The Tarheel Project SWORD Captain Scarlet SPC.

A trip to the Posties today and I thought I'd seen a ghost.
There below the Papers was a stack of plastic masks.
Dracula masks.
£2.49 each.
They're virtually doubles of a similar Drac mask I have.
You can see it here at the top of my old toy cabinet talking to a skull.
Mine was vintage already when I bought it in Whitby at the Stone House shop probably 20 years ago, if not more. I remember buying three for .... £30. I keit one and sold the others. It's the closest I've been to the quality of a Don Post mask. Somewhere in between that and Ben Cooper.
Mine looks a bit more detailed and is made of quite hard plastic. The Posty masks are flimsier but so similar.
I'll have to find mine for Halloween!

I Saw Two Ships

Woodsy,
Here are two small ship models I recently found at a local flea market. I’m not into ships really, but since I never see model kits of any kind at tag sales or flea markets, I snapped them up.
I decided to build them both, in honor of my father, who loved all things involving the sea.
The Lindberg Tuna Seiner is from 1964, and the Pyro Flying Cloud is from 1966. Both were fun to build, but the Flying Cloud was difficult due to the many finicky masts. As you can see, I did not dare try any rigging!

Philip's Monogram Space Buggy

Below are finished Photos of my 1/48 Scale Fictional Space Cargo Hauler in Modern NASA Markings.
This model was originally issued in 1959 and designed by German missile developer Willy Ley. The first time I built this model I was a very young boy and have always thought it was a cool kit.
On this attempt I decided to use modern NASA markings from my spare decal box. A few minor scratch-built and photo-etched parts were also added.
To make the display stand more colorful, I cut out a star-field image from an old astronomy calendar and glued it to the top of the wooden base. I have read other model builders make a couple of funny observations about this spaceship design.
First, the space suits kind of make the astronauts look like the mascot of the Michelin Tire Company.
Secondly, the cage sections make you wonder if the designers were really that worried about space-sharks!
The last photos show the unassembled kit parts and instructions from the 1969 re-issue.

Body Concious

Slightly dissatisfied with my recent purchase of the CM Lifting Body toy, due to its odd shaped canopy, I decided to replace it.
The scrap box provided a perfect replacement with a small dome of exact diameter. I’ve just push fitted it, as the original just popped on and placed the first canopy inside the body for safe keeping.
A much more aesthetically and aerodynamically pleasing result!

Slim Pickins at Thorpe Arch

We returned to our old Sunday car boot haunt at Thorpe Arch in Wetherby after what was probably a six month gap.
The Missus did well with a sackful of dolls but I struggled, eventually buying a small mixed box of violin fittings for future sale. Oh, and another Sunny Smile Action Man Jeep.
I passed on two things of note.
The Ajax style Okay Adventure Album. I thought wed seen all of the covers featuring Pyro spaceships but I'm not sure we've seen this one on MC. Is that a Pyro in the top right corner? What a cover!
There's an Ace version of the above too. To be honest I forget which I saw, Okay or Ace!
I also handled a toy car from 1989. Grey plastic with black wheels and very UFO. There was a white stripe on top and a word, which I can't recall. It reminded me a lot of time new UFO toy cars like this, just smoother, with no detailing at all, almost like solid rubber or even wood. Ring any bells?

Spare parts came in the post today so it’s getting closer to being complete in appearance.
PS.
Bandai’s stock number is F34-7380 as shown in the top right hand corner of the box lid and also on the box lid ends. The toy is simply marked ‘NO.10’ on the base which I think is the same as the Jack Rosenthal version.
I wonder if the caterpillar tracks were used on another toy of that era?

Anyone for Kensington?

I'm puzzled about this.
The release date of Kensington was 1979 but I could have sworn I saw it one Christmas at home in the mid-1970's.
I must be getting mixed up. I even thought it was an LP until my older Sister said it was a board game.

Seen a few more things on the telly box.
Punisher The Last Fall. A TV special movie. I like the Punisher. No messin' about. No fancy talkin'. Frank basically goes nuts and rids NYC of every hoodlum going. It doesn't take long. He's done by the end of the film. I like the big actor but the action was a little staid. Not for the squeamish. On Disney+. On reflection I preferred the old Thomas Jane Punisher TV special set in the launderette. Now that's punishing!
Jessica Jones. Another Marvel on Disney+. I worried this series before about the super strong private eye. It is engaging but just not super heroey enough for me. I ditched it again. Sorry Jessica.
WandaVision. I love the Scarlet Witch. so damn powerful and gorgeous too that Miss. Maximoff. Vision's OK I guess. A bit tame.. But I didn't like their marital soap at all. Too Off-piste Marvel for me. Stick to what we like Stan. Lotsa Bashin' and tight Spandex! Ditched
VisionQuest: Vision and Ultron talking. The actors that is. Nope thankyou very much. Too much talk by actors about acting. They should have stayed in costume at least. Ditched.
SoulM8te. A sci-fi Ai-fi on Disney too. An 18+! Jeepers I thought, that's a strong rating. As a flick it was OK. I don't think it said anything new about AI home bots though (not like Kubrick's astonishing AI), except that, they're likely to destroy you, but We knew that already didn't we. Think Stepford Wives and Ex- Machina and you're close to the servo. It didn't warrant 18+.

A recent search on ebay for space toys brought up something quite unusual, a small friction powered spaceship which looks very like an early Lifting Body.
Ive never seen this particular toy before and at first assumed it was a russian manufacture, but its clearly labelled ‘Made in Hong Kong’ with a small trademark of ‘CM’.
The overall shape is very reminiscent of early NASA concepts for Re-Entry Glider craft, with the blunt snub nose and wide delta body. The only major difference is the odd pill box like canopy, which belies the streamlined shape. Inside is a small pilot figure, glued firmly into a small ring console.
The body popped open quite easily, as the glue had mostly persished and inside, the friction motor had a small spring, running off a cog, which attaches to a plastic tympanum, to make a roaring sound as the toy is pushed along.
CM is not a maker ive ever heard of, although Hong Kong toys are littered with mysterious trademarks and stamps. Does it mean anything to you?

The wheels are inaccurate because I've built it to run on 45mm gauge garden railway track. It will, one day, run in our garden. It is battery powered.
Anyway, I should just make the 6 o'clock whistle if I get a move on.

COR! ARTO'S ALFA ROMEO CARABO RERUN

Here are photos of my wooden and motorized model of the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo concept car.
Made by an unknown but obviously quite skilful Finnish model maker, it measures an admirable 37 cm.
There are two electric motors inside, and it had some kind of remote control, now sadly lost.

Ever since I played with my Action Man German Soldier as a kid I was intrigued by the stick grenades Palitoy provided, as seen here on eBay.
All grown up now and not wanting to pay the prices for these albeit superbly made toy? replicas available in eBay and elsewhere.
... I thought I'd experiment and make my own, whilst my Friday morning sausages were frying.
Using a plastic vitamin jar I tried different 'sticks'.
Chair leg.

Different plastic top and wooden pole
Monochrome set
And my personal favourite, with a watering can spout, ready for throwing at my mates back in 1970!

Childminding in Shipley again, we had chance to nip round the charity shops.
Besides some fabulous LP records, which I brought home ( OO7, Close Encounters, Beatles), I also saw on the vintage side of things a lovely Fisher Price multi-storey garage like this
, a big Disney outdoor set, which I can't find a pic of and a London's Burning board game like this.
All a tenner each, but I passed.

Well, thanks to the The Peter Hansen Collection of Comic Art, Vintage Toys and other collectables - Part 3 at Excalibur Auctions, we can now enjoy actual pictures of the plastic remote controlled
toy itself, which I think is the first time for MC.
And the interesting instructions with 'patent pending'.

Terry's New Bandai (JR21) SPV

Hi Woodsy
I Finally managed to acquire a ‘Bandai’ large friction drive SPV.
As you are probably aware it is in fact identical to the JR21 version and has their diamond shaped trademark on its base. However unlike the JR21 version the words ‘Made in Hong Kong’ are absent.
This particular one has been well played with as Captain Scarlet’s right arm was broken off at the elbow and the main part of the top fin was not visible - both parts were found inside next to the friction motor. The top fin is now held in place by bluetack.
Captain Blue is missing and so is one of the four rear tracks plus one track wheel. Surprisingly the ejector seat and hatch are working fine.
The timing is unfortunate as a couple of weeks ago someone had the figures for sale on eBay so the hunt goes on for the missing parts.

Our recent visit to Shipley did garner a bunch of fabulous TV and Film LP records, all in one particular charity shop and all £1.99 each except for the Beatles, which was £7.99.

Cook Book: Bubble Gum Card Price Guide 1993

Recent talk of gum cards got me thinking about an old booklet I once bought.
It will have been the mid- '90's and it was about sets of gum cards by a chap called Henry Cook. It was my first real I introduction to how many sets collectors were interested in and their values. Not a thick book, it was released in 1993 and I read it cover to cover many times.
I would like say I bought it at the NEC's Memorabilia weekend but that's because one Henry Cook organized that too before it was taken over and went very sports- based.
