Mint uses a somewhat older setup generally based around long term support principles, so it has a lot of older packages and etc by design. That&#39;s great for system stability in general, but it does mean a lot more stuff is behind and may not be good for running the latest stuff. I want to suggest something more like Debian or etc, but that might be too hard. Perhaps one of the *buntu line. (If you don&#39;t like the Apple-like GNOME interface, Kubuntu runs KDE, Xubuntu runs XFCE, and Lubuntu runs LXDE. KDE is the most Windows-like of those I guess.)
