mathematicians should rigorously define the syntax, semantics, and axioms of every branch of math and then post those standards somewhere freely available online. in fact every page of that website should be required to list all of its dependencies (other pages that you need to understand first) and be checked carefully for circular dependency issues

none of this “buy multiple $100 math textbooks which don’t even bother to mention basic things like operator precedence” shit

like imagine if this is how programming worked: oh you want to learn C? buy a $100 textbook. oh that textbook doesn’t make sense to you? that’s because you need to read 4 other $100 textbooks first. oh you’re still missing important information? yeah we didn’t rigorously define certain things in the textbooks because you can understand it through ✨ vibes ✨ instead. no there is no language documentation other than the textbooks

      I’m starting to think that FOSS projects should explicitly explain which problems are the user’s responsibility and which problems are the project’s responsibility - in a prominent place

because often I’ll start using some FOSS but it turns out that I’m expected to put in a lot more work than I have the energy to, and when I complain about it people tell me that it’s my responsibility to make sure that that problem doesn’t happen. if I had known that that was going to be my responsibility, I wouldn’t have used that software. but at that point I’m in an awkward position where I unexpectedly have to either put in effort to fix the problem, or put in effort to find and configure different software

some great examples are treesitter-nvim expecting users to figure out neovim version compatibility on their own, and Arch expecting users to keep up with Arch news so that they know which updates might bork something

IMO it’s totally fine to shift responsibility onto your users like that - just make sure that every user knows about this from the outset. that way nobody is stuck doing work that they don’t have the energy for, because their software unexpectedly stopped working and it’s their responsibility to fix it

      I wonder if anyone has made a low-level #Lisp that is specifically designed to be semantically close to #WASM code, so that it compiles to be very very efficient (kinda like how Lua is really fast because it’s very semantically similar to C code, which is what its interpreter is written in)

like WASM already reads kinda like a Lisp to me, and I bet that would run crazy fast

(I’ve been tempted to do this several times I’m ngl. IMO it should be way more common for a programming language to let you express a series of data-transformations as a left-to-right pipeline

like instead of doing this:

let foo = someCall(args);
foo = anotherCall(foo);
foo = aThirdCall(foo);

let me do this:

let foo = someCall(args)
|> anotherCall
|> aThirdCall;

a lot of functional languages do this even worse than in my first example, because you have to write it like this instead:

let foo = aThirdCall( anotherCall( someCall(args) ) );

or in Haskell syntax it would be more like this, I think:

foo = aThirdCall . anotherCall . someCall $ args

in both cases, the functions go in right-to-left order instead of left-to-right which IMO is pretty counterintuitive

(Lisps do this really well though, thanks to threading macros 💙)

      languages like Clojure and Common Lisp are designed so that everything is an expression, but in my new language, (C++)++, everything defaults to being a statement instead. if you’d like to turn a statement into an expression, just prepend return:

int foo() {
return 1337;;
}

int addOne(int n) {
return (return n) + (return 1);;
}

int factorial(int n) {
return if (return (return n) == (return 1)) {
return 1;;
} else (return if (return (return n) > (return 1)) {
return factorial(return (return n) - (return 1));;
} else {
error(return "invalid number");;
});;
}

you may have noticed (C++)++’s revolutionary new return if expression syntax. in (C++)++, an if ... else statement simply evaluates its condition and both bodies (whether the condition is true or not) and then discards the results. but a return if ... else statement instead acts like a ternary operator in other languages:

// this evaluates to `1`!
return if (return true) {
return 1;;
} else {
return 0;;
};;

in fact, a return if ... else expression is just syntactic sugar for the ternary operator:

return (return true) ? (return 1) : (return 0);;

you may have also noticed that many lines in (C++)++ end with two semicolons instead of one. this is for two reasons:

first, (C++)++ has a revolutionary “automatic semicolon removal” system. while your code is being compiled, the compiler will automatically remove all of your semicolons and then guess where they should go. this is very easy to do and should be fine

second, (C++)++ comes bundled with a new type of operator known as the “double semicolon operator”. here’s how it works:

// when a double semicolon is inserted at the end of an expression, with no expression in
// front of it, it evaluates to the expression on the left
return 1;;
// ^ this evaluates to `1`

// when a double semicolon is used to separate two expressions, it evaluates to the
// second expression
return 1;; return 2
// ^ this evaluates to `2`

// and finally, the double-semicolon operator is left-associative, and can be chained
// forever if you want:
return 1;; return 2;; return 3;; return 4
// ^ this is the same as (((return 1;; return 2);; return 3);; return 4)

curly braces are ignored by the (C++)++ compiler. instead, the language uses significant whitespace. including curly braces is still considered best practice, however, to avoid scaring C++ developers:

// avoid doing this:
int collatz(int n)
return if (return (return (return n) % (return 2)) == (return 0))
return (return n) / (return 2)
else
return (return (return n) * (return 3)) + (return 1)

// instead, do this:
int collatz(int n) {
return if (return (return (return n) % (return 2)) == (return 0)) {
return (return n) / (return 2)
} else {
return (return (return n) * (return 3)) + (return 1)
}
}

also, make sure to add lots of double-semicolon operators, so that C++ devs will feel at home:

// this is even better:
int collatz(int n) {
return if (return (return (return n;;) % (return 2;;);;) == (return 0;;);;) {
return (return n;;) / (return 2;;);;
} else {
return (return (return n;;) * (return 3;;);;) + (return 1;;);;
};;
};;

      I wake with a start as the room is filled with cold metallic beeping. I scramble deliriously, my vision still blurry in the light: The guards will be here any second. They’ll punish me if I’m not ready for my shift. Where is my uniform? I can’t disappoint them again.

A device around my neck detects my rising panic and blasts my face with ice cold air for a few moments. The sudden shock brings me to my senses and I gradually steady my shaky breathing.

The familiar searing pain in my head helps to wake me up the rest of the way as I reach for the information rectangle on my bedside table. I forget what the Autonomists called this thing, but it doesn’t matter. It’s more of their incredible technology: A featureless box that fits in my palm. It responds to my voice and my touch, and presents information to me when I ask for it. It seems to know everything.

The rectangle beeps in recognition as I touch it, and its front face displays the text: “A synthmorph is ready in the resleeving lab. Follow the indicated path.” I marvel for a moment that I didn’t even need to ask it a question - it somehow knew what I wanted to know.

I was taught to fear this technology, but I’m done being a prisoner to fear. I hold the rectangle in front of me like a magnifying glass, and it changes to become transparent - as if it were made of glass. But when I look through it, I see a blue line on the floor. The “indicated path”. Incredible.

I follow it out of the door of… my new home… and into the bustle of the common area. I feel a wave of nausea and my headache redoubles as I try to process my surroundings. Dizzyingly patterned art on every wall, people and beings with appearances beyond what I can imagine, flashes of color and light, and deafening sounds (music?) made using more of their electronic technology. My room must have hidden the sound from me. I don’t even bother questioning how.

I grit my teeth and follow the blue line - trying not to notice anything else. Eventually I find myself walking into a cluttered metal room, full of instruments and machinery. I sigh in relief as the door closes and the cacophony of color and noise is gone again.

“Are you okay?” asks a concerned robot, which takes a step toward me and then pauses, unsure of how to help.

I close my eyes and take a few moments to steady myself in the cold air of the lab, my head throbbing in rhythm with the pumping of my heart, before finally replying, “My head hurts.”

“Oh! Of course it does! Barotraumagenic neuropathy, isn’t it…? Inconsistent life support conditions on the asteroid mines leading to…” It speaks quickly and shyly, seeming to mostly be talking to itself. “I can fix that! Can I fix that?” It looks at me expectantly.

“Please.”, I say. The pain is always worse when I’m stressed, and I couldn’t be more stressed about what’s waiting for me in this lab. My eyes are drawn to a motionless mechanical body - not too different from the one the other robot is using - laying motionless on a padded reclined chair. Next to it is a second chair, this one upright and empty.

“Um…” the robot is sheepishly clutching a tool made of the same kind of matte plasticky substance that most of their technology seems to use. “This might feel a little weird, but I promise it’s going to help, and it’s not going to hurt. Okay?”

Without waiting for a response, it… she? Sprays me in the face with the tool. Thousands of droplets of dry moisture melt painlessly into my skin. I jerk back in alarm but suddenly… The pain is gone. It’s just gone.

“I disabled your ability to feel neuropathic pain, but sometimes there can be false positives and genuine pain can be suppressed too, so please be careful until we complete the resleeving process.”

I want to cry tears of relief. Nothing hurts. For the first time in my life, nothing hurts at all. But I don’t allow myself the luxury of tears. I need to stay strong for just a little bit longer. “Okay,” I say, tasting the cold lab air as if these will be my last moments alive. “Put me in that damned machine.”

      hey just as a reminder, if you’re posting or boosting something that is meant to create strong negative emotions in the reader, please be sure to give it a CW that gives folks a good idea of what they’re going to be seeing

by “strong negative emotions” I’m talking about outrage, fear, a sense of vulnerability or danger, empathy for others’ suffering, a sense of injustice or unfairness, or any other emotion one might expect to feel about Current Events

IMO it doesn’t matter what the post is about (it could be about drama in some obscure hobby, or something happening on GitHub, or anything else) it’s about the emotions that that post is meant to create. that’s an important thing for folks to be able to opt into or out of explicitly

adding CWs for this kind of post will help everyone have a much more comfortable Fedi browsing experience

      now that there’s basically no way to get a tech job in the US, what do y’all recommend as a career field for someone who:

is autistic
probably can’t get her hands dirty because of sensory issues (I might be able to learn but unsure) (I also considered wearing gloves whenever working with gross parts but I’m unsure how practical that would be)
has crippling social anxiety
is very good at quickly learning systems and dealing with numbers and other logical stuff like that

I’m okay with even low-paying jobs as long as it’s a liveable wage, but ideally I’d like something that doesn’t take too much unpaid training because I want to get some kind of income quickly

here’s what I’ve considered so far:

accountant: it seems like there’s an expectation for me to be “professional” (create a whole work persona and mask aggressively) which I hate, and I would also need to network. but I’m considering this

locksmith: I’ve always wanted to learn lockpicking, but I’m unsure how dextrous I am, and I feel like my hands might have to get dirty/sticky/gross if I did this

CNC machine operator: this seemed perfect for me at first (get to make cool parts, get to work with computers, minimal People Stuff), but then I learned that I’d still have to work with parts with my hands so my hands would probably still get gross and that would drive me crazy - unless I can wash them immediately after

:boost_ok: boosts are encouraged!

      the word “lazy” is used to victim-blame and suspend empathy for others. it’s a thought-terminating cliche. “why do people act like this? it’s because they’re lazy. it’s their fault and they are low-value because of it”

whenever I see the word “lazy” I try to remind myself to step back from the situation, have compassion for the people being labeled, and ask myself “what is actually the problem? is this a learned behavior? is this a neurotype thing? is this a product of hidden societal forces? does it come from trauma? how can others help them?”

nobody is simply “lazy”. it is always more complicated than that

      I hate that the default volume for everything is 100%, because

let’s say I’ve configured every piece of software on my computer to use the exact right volume. and then I open a new app that’s too quiet, even at the default volume of 100%

I can’t turn the 100% volume up higher than 100%, so now I have to raise my main volume in order to hear this one app, which means that all of my other apps are now too loud

so if I have one very very quiet app on my computer, because of that one app I have to set every other app to 40% volume or lower. and if for any reason those volume settings get reset, (like a game gets updated or I lose my config file) I’m going to get my ears blasted out

and also any time I open a new app that’s not too quiet by default, I’m going to get my ears blasted out too until I can get into the settings and turn the volume down

I would genuinely prefer that 0% volume be the default over 100%, but I think somewhere between 25% and 50% is probably ideal. either that or let me turn the volume up to 200%+ (which is the same thing but expressed differently)

      winning 100,000 internet arguments about why Linux is better than Windows or why FOSS is superior or why enshittification is bad

is still worse than helping one (1) non-technical person install Linux on their machine that can’t run Windows 11. or helping them install and learn to use LibreOffice because they can’t afford Office 365. or teaching them how to disable the spyware and adware on their Windows machine

for every person who’s staunchly anti-FOSS, there’s someone trying Linux for the first time and overwhelmed by driver issues, or someone who simply doesn’t know how to find good free software, or someone who wants to learn photo editing and can’t afford Photoshop

so don’t be pushy or smug or argumentative towards those who have already made up their minds. be informative and helpful to those who are open to help. tell them what their options are and be ready to provide support if things go wrong

      I find it funny how in fiction hubris is a high-brow way of saying “you scienced way too hard and now the universe is going to punish you for Defying The Natural Order™” with the implication that hubris is some kind of character flaw: the character flaw of trying to make things better with science

but in actual Greek myths hubris basically just means “you proved you were better than a god at something and all of the gods are massive raging narcissists so now they’re going to curse you about it”

except where’s the Greek myth about someone committing hubris by inventing agriculture and mortally wounding the god of starvation? or the Greek myth where someone commits hubris by inventing the bifurcated needle and killing the god of smallpox?

it was hubris to invent vaccines. it was hubris to discover how to safely transfuse blood. oral rehydration therapy, germ theory, chlorinated water, synthetic fertilizers. all of these things Go Against The Natural Order and have saved millions to billions of lives, because guess what? the natural order is a fucking atrocity of unimaginable scale. and we are actively stopping it every single day we learn something new about the universe. I think “hubris” is an inherently reactionary concept and it can go straight to hell, which we’re going to destroy someday with science

      I fucking love stories where it never really feels like the main character(s) are threatened. where they’re never captured, humbled, tortured, nearly die, etc. mainstream writing advice says that this is a bad idea - that these characters are “Mary Sues” and that the audience will get bored or frustrated with them. so that’s why I like “bad writing” that deliberately or unintentionally ignores this advice. it’s incredibly rare to find, and it’s often notoriously bad or “cringe” but I love it

the thing is, I’ve been brought low and threatened and humbled my entire life and I’m sick of it, and I don’t want to watch it happen to anyone else. I want to see other people be empowered and make a difference in their world

unfortunately like I said above, these stories are incredibly rare. the Kino’s Journey anime (I’ve only seen the new one) is a good example with some exceptions, because the PoV character is almost always Kino and Kino always has a handle on things, even if it seems like she doesn’t

I also really liked the first season of the Overlord anime, where the PoV character is always empowered. but in the second season, it shifts away from that and starts focusing on Ainz’s cruelty and I hate that

then there’s Bofuri and Shangri-La Frontier where nobody can be meaningfully threatened because they take place in a video game

I could also mention a few different comics but they’re either very problematic in places or they’re notoriously bad to the point of being memes, so I won’t lol

      I’m ngl I am genuinely considering using Windows 11 instead of switching to Linux once Windows 10 reaches end-of-life

playing games is just such an important part of my life and I know Proton has gotten drastically better but games still run worse overall on Linux (thanks to shitty video card drivers, which isn’t Linux’s fault) and also tend to be glitchier too (thanks to Proton not being perfect yet)

also Linux just frustrates me a lot lol. like… a lot. it’s so fucking arcane and when you search for help everyone is so smug and elitist

the spyware on Windows 11 worries me, but I’m hoping that O&O ShutUp 10 is going to be enough to disable it all

      I fucking love #StarWars ship designs. I don’t like the movies (too science fantasy) or the shows but I love reading about Legends lore on Wookieepedia and I love the ships. Star Trek and Stargate have some cool ships (and some really weird ones) but Star Wars ships are just so consistently good-looking. I don’t know what it is. even a lot of the prequel ships are just gorgeous

      “idempotence” is a disproportionately fancy, unapproachable word for literally just “if nothing needs changing, don’t touch anything”. I bet the term was invented by someone who was trying to justify their paycheck

also, making stuff idempotent just seems like the obviously right thing to do. we don’t need a fancy math term for “hey maybe your patch shouldn’t break stuff that’s already patched”

I’ve been trying to think of a more approachable term than “idempotence” and the best I have so far is “look first”. as in, “make sure your patch looks first (before touching/changing anything)”

      *shakes my cane angrily*

back in my day all of the code for a webpage was hand-written, simple, and easy to read. nobody used async requests, everything was easy to work with and if you called a webpage “slow” people would assume you meant it took a long time to download everything

but the kids these days are turning everything into overengineered GUI apps with a bunch of 10 MB Node packages with 500 ms of input lag and then they’re transpiling and minifying it all down into unreadable mush and you can’t even write userscripts for anything anymore because it’s all hidden away inside of their damn frameworks
