Don’t Be a Useful Idiot:
Covid Hysteria Meets Bitcoin’s Minor Software Spat

The term “useful idiot” has long described people who advance someone else’s agenda while believing they’re defending a noble cause. During the Covid period, mass fear and social pressure turned thoughtful individuals into enforcers of policies whose full costs only became clear later. Lockdowns, mandates, and tribal shaming divided families and societies. Many acted out of genuine concern but ended up amplifying overreach, economic damage, and eroded trust—serving interests far removed from public health. Extremes on both compliance and denial sides had their useful idiots. Critical thinking gave way to narrative loyalty.

Bitcoin’s ethos—verify, don’t trust; sovereignty through personal responsibility—should make it resistant to such dynamics. Yet the community keeps falling into similar traps, most recently with the Bitcoin Core v30 vs. Knots debate. The good news? This one is far less impactful than the Block Size Wars of 2017. It’s a relatively minor policy disagreement being treated like an existential crisis by some.

The Actual Stakes:
A Configurable Policy Tweak

Bitcoin Core v30.0 (released October 2025) updated the default relay policy for OP_RETURN data. It raised -datacarriersize from ~83 bytes to a much higher value (effectively uncapped for typical use) and allowed multiple OP_RETURN outputs.

This affects what nodes relay by default in their mempool—not consensus rules. Miners decide block contents. Users can easily configure the old limit, stick with prior Core versions, or run alternatives. Data embedding was already happening through other mechanisms (e.g., inscriptions via witness data). Fees continue to regulate demand.

Bitcoin Knots, an alternative maintained largely by Luke Dashjr, keeps stricter defaults to limit non-monetary data. Knots usage has risen as a form of protest or preference.

Legitimate discussion exists: Does easing data relay encourage blockchain bloat and higher costs for full nodes? Or does strict filtering contradict Bitcoin’s permissionless, neutral design? Reasonable people can disagree on defaults and priorities (money-first vs. broader utility).

Both Sides Overreact—And It’s Smaller Than You Think

This isn’t the Block Size Wars. That was a fundamental fight over Bitcoin’s scaling path, block capacity, and governance. It led to a hard fork (Bitcoin Cash), prolonged hash rate battles, and deep community scars. The stakes felt existential: Would on-chain scaling destroy decentralization, or would small blocks choke adoption?

By comparison, v30 is a default relay policy adjustment—configurable, reversible in practice, and not altering what can ultimately be mined. No chain split. No forced upgrade. Nodes have run varied policies before without catastrophe. The network continues functioning. Claims of imminent doom (or that this “breaks neutrality forever”) are hyperbolic.

•	Core-side overreach: Treating every policy evolution as unquestionable and dismissing pushback as mere FUD ignores valid node-operator concerns about long-term costs and community sentiment. It echoes institutional “trust the experts” arrogance from the Covid years.

•	Knots-side overreach: Apocalyptic rhetoric (e.g., equating Core v30 with endorsing illegal content or claiming Bitcoin “won’t survive”) manufactures panic. Positioning Knots (or any alternative) as the savior “fixing” Bitcoin triggers a familiar red flag in this space. History is littered with “Bitcoin but better” projects that promised fixes and delivered division or failure. Running Knots doesn’t stop miners from including fee-paying data transactions. It doesn’t rewrite incentives.
No one is forcing the latest Core. Run what works for you. Test configurations. This is not a loyalty test for being a “real Bitcoiner.”

The Useful Idiot Pattern, Scaled Down

The danger isn’t the technical change itself—it’s how it fuels unnecessary tribalism. Like Covid hysteria:
•	Emotional triggers and influencer amplification replace sober analysis.
•	People pick teams based on social circles rather than reading the PRs or running the software.
•	Energy is wasted on infighting instead of building, adopting, or addressing bigger issues (regulation, privacy, education).

This debate is smaller potatoes than the Block Size Wars, yet it still risks turning Bitcoin into another online culture war. Useful idiots on either side amplify division, scare newcomers, and hand ammunition to critics who portray Bitcoin as chaotic. The real protocol strength lies in incentives and voluntary participation, not perfect defaults or one implementation.

Sovereignty means reading the release notes yourself, weighing trade-offs, and choosing software aligned with your principles—not panicking because one camp or the other screams loudest.
Multiple node implementations can strengthen resilience (different eyes on code, fallback options), provided they don’t create artificial fragmentation over minor policies.

Bitcoin survived the far more consequential Block Size Wars. It will shrug off this configurable tweak. The bigger risk is Bitcoiners forgetting their own advice: verify claims, ignore hype, and focus on what actually matters—using sound money in a permissionless system.

Don’t volunteer as a useful idiot for low-stakes drama. Stack sats, run your preferred node, and keep perspective. The protocol is antifragile. The community stays strong when individuals think independently.

Kill the bitcoin influencer you heavily worship before they kill you.

You are a sovereign.
