I crunched some numbers to get a sense of what a minimum wage income and the median family income in the U.S. would look like if they'd increased as much as the the price of gold has increased since the U.S. left the gold standard in 1971.

The results were both quite sobering and highly indicative of why the U.S. is facing such staggering wealth inequality today.

I received the following notification from Substack last week, and it made me quite happy.

(For new readers, please note that I don’t write about “crypto,” just Bitcoin.)

I very much appreciate your attention. I don’t take it for granted and I work hard to offer you thoughtful and human-crafted writing each week.

On that note, let’s dive into this week’s edition of the newsletter.

What Minimum Wage Would Look Like Today If It Were Priced in Gold

Two week’s ago, I came across the following post on X:

I found it quite intriguing and double clicked on it to learn more.

In the first comment of this post, the author explained how $64 dollars per week in July 1971, a month before the United States went off the gold standard, bought someone the approximately same amount of gold as $7,320 does as of July 2026 (when gold was priced between $4,000 and $4,100 per troy ounce).

In July 1971, $64 was a week’s take home pay for a minimum wage worker, who earned $1.60 per hour back then. At the time, a troy ounce of gold cost $35, meaning that a minimum wage earner could purchase almost two troy ounces of gold with a week’s paycheck.

As of August 2026, the federal minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour, bringing weekly take home pay to $290. Currently, a troy ounce of gold costs $4,341.60. This means that it would take almost 30 weeks of work for a minimum wage employee to purchase the same two troy ounces of gold.

Let me repeat (and slightly rephrase) that:

In July 1971, one could acquire two troy ounces of gold with one week’s paycheck while earning minimum wage, while, today, it would take 30x the amount of labor to obtain the same amount of gold.

Put another way, for a minimum wage worker to be able to purchase two troy ounces of gold per week today, they would have to earn approximately $7,937.60 per week, which comes out to about $198.44 per hour.

Why does this matter?

Good question.

In the edition of this newsletter below, I broke down what inflation looks like when measured in gold, since gold has been the most reliable store of value across the last 5,000 years.

As I wrote above, a hand-tailored toga cost approximately an ounce of gold in Ancient Rome. Today, a hand-tailored suit in New York City (NYC) costs approximately the same amount.

It’s also been said that an ounce of gold could by approximately 350 hand-made loaves of bread in Ancient Rome. This comes out to about $12 per hand-made loaf today in NYC (which is admittedly a little high as a hand-made loaf of bread at a bakery in NYC costs between $7 and $11 or so).

The point I’m trying to make is that while prices consistently rise in fiat terms (or, put another way, fiat currencies continue to give you less and less purchasing power), they stay relatively consistent when priced in gold across time.

The ones who suffer from the U.S. dollar not being pegged to gold are those of the lowest socioeconomic status among us because they often don’t have discretionary funds to put towards saving in gold or other assets that preserve wealth, and they often save whatever they can in cash.

What is more, the federal minimum wage in the U.S. has only increased at a small fraction of the rate that the price of gold has increased since 1971, meaning that minimum wage earners are earning exponentially less than they were from a purchasing power standpoint than they were in 1971.

From July 1971 until present day, the federal minimum wage in U.S. dollar terms has grown approximately 4.5x while the price of gold in U.S. dollars has gone up 124x.

Quite sad.

And it isn’t only minimum wage earners who’ve been drastically affected.

What the Median Family Income from 1971 Would Look Like Today Priced in Gold

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in July 1971, the median family income was $10,290. And according to the U.S. Census Bureau and Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) the median family income in the U.S. as of 2024 is somewhere between $83,730 and $105,800.

If the median family income rose at the same rate as the price of gold, it would have been $793,800 as of 2024.

What we’ve seen is median family income grow 9.1x in U.S. dollar terms from 1971 until 2024, while the price of gold has increased 77.1x.

The Poor Are Angry — And Rightfully So

I share this because over the last 55 years, many, especially those who own few to no assets, have experienced the the decimation of the value of their time and labor.

Most people don’t fully realize this though, because they only tend to think of money in nominal terms, not in the amount of purchase power a certain amount of money gives them.

Plus, they’re told by the likes of Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) that it’s just those pesky greedy corporations that are driving prices up. Sen. Warren has never once publicly mentioned anything about the damage that the U.S. Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury has done to the fabric of American society via its money printing an debt issuance, respectively.

In fact, Sen. Warren wants there to be no limit to the amount of debt the U.S. can issue.

Truly insane.

And when things get this insane, more and more people gravitate towards other insane ideas, like lets-have-the-state-control-everything-style socialism.

For the record, I’m not against the rich paying their fair share in taxes, and I’m mostly a centrist when it comes to political views. However, I am against the state intervening in places where the market should be solving the issue.

And before I continue, I will say that I don’t blame the poor for wanting grocery stores that offer food at a 30% discount. People are hurting, and I can both sympathize and empathize with that.

I can also zoom out and view things from a systems perspective, though, and what Mamdani is now trying is a version of something that has have always ended very badly historically.

State-run grocery stores and/or price controls inevitably lead to shortages, as they artificially increase demand, while creating an economic scenario where producers and those on the supply chain aren’t earning enough to sustain their businesses.

State-run stores also hurt local businesses, which are major contributors to the tax base.

Let me try to paint this picture in the simplest terms possible.

Let’s say you own a cafe and sell coffee at $3 per cup. Then, the government comes along and says “everyone should be able to afford coffee, so we’re going to sell it at state-run cafes at $2 per cup.”

Now, more and more people go to the state-run cafes, putting the private cafes out of business and putting economic strain on the suppliers of the coffee beans and others on the supply chain for the state-run cafes. This leads to shortages, which, in turn leads to the closing of more and more cafes, which, in turn, leads to a shrinking of tax revenue.

When you mess with prices, the inevitable result is scarcity or shortages.

That said, the reason I’m personally not so quick to criticize Mamdani is because I think we live in a system of socialism for the rich where banks get bailouts and markets are controlled and propped by bureaucrats, and I think that style of socialism leads to the poor, young, and disenfranchised demanding their own style of socialism.

But I’m getting off track.

I write this edition of the newsletter because 1.) I believe the devaluation and people’s time and labor via money printing and excessive debt issuance is the primary factor that has led to the wealth divide and subsequent social unrest in the U.S. and 2.) I don’t believe the Mamdani’s approach nor the approach of D.C. bureaucrats who intervene in markets are good or sustainable approaches and that both will end in collapse.

And, the solution to these unsustainable practices, IMO, is Bitcoin.

Bitcoin, the Third Way

Some refer to bitcoin as digital gold, but it’s actually much better than that.

It’s finite supply makes it like gold in that it’s scarce, and because it’s scarce — perfectly scarce, at that — it’s a good tool for preserving value across time and space. And the more people who use it, the better of a tool for this purpose it becomes.

Bitcoin is also politically agnostic. It isn’t just for those on the political left or those on the political right — it’s for anyone.

With that said, it does fit into the agendas of both the left (e.g., it’s a great tool for financial inclusion) and the right (e.g., it enables self sovereignty and helps one “pull oneself up by the bootstraps”).

Beyond these characteristics, it’s also a money that can be sent permissionlessly from one person to another globally without an intermediary.

This gives it tremendous value and also makes it easier for businesses to pay talent anywhere in the world for their work.

I advocate for Bitcoin because I don’t believe the answers to many of the issues we’re currently facing here in the U.S. and also globally are going to come from within the system.

The system — which includes those on both the political left and right — is incentivized to perpetuate itself, and it’s currently best serving only those at the financial top of it.

And those at the top continue to benefit from it as they can continue borrowing money that continues to be debased at low rates to support their lifestyle while the numerous assets they hold continue to increase in value, mostly as a result of currency debasement.

Those who’ve been disenfranchised via fiat currency debasement are re-enfranchised on a bitcoin standard.

So long as Bitcoin remains decentralized and secure, it has the potential to offer people a more dignified life — one in which their time and labor is respected and one in which they can economize and work hard to create a better life for themselves again.

I’m going to skip the market section for this week, because this post took a bit out of me.

When I started working on this multi-part piece on the Bitcoin Learning Center (BLC) in Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭, I hoped it might serve as a catalyst to snap people out of their bear market doldrums.

And then the Coldcard incident happened before I published the final part of the series, and sentiment in this space hit some of the lowest lows I've ever seen (for good reason).

While I know it's hard to see the light and to believe that things will get better right now, the work that BLC's team, led by Fai and Kostro (nprofile…qndq), is doing is a great reminder that many good things are happening around Bitcoin globally and that Bitcoin remains something worth fighting for.

My family used to own and operate the movie theater above, The North Fork Arts Center at the Sapan Greenport Theatre, which is located in a quiet town on the northeast end of Long Island, NY.

It was one of a few community theaters on Long Island that we owned and operated or that my father conceptualized, designed, and built in an effort to help revive certain Main Streets on Long Island.

My father was once an architect for United Artists, now Regal, movie theaters. For the company, he designed large multiplexes — theaters with a half dozen to a dozen and a half screens.

One of the more well-known theaters he designed is the Regal theater located on the south side of Union Square in New York City.

He came to a point in his career, though, at which he no longer wanted to design such big, impersonal structures.

Instead, he wanted to build and operate theaters at which parents felt safe dropping off their children.

He also envisioned these theaters becoming the centerpieces for suburban downtowns as well as entities that could help to catalyze the revival of these areas.

He had varied success in his efforts.

The theaters did often become focal points of downtown areas, and they did, in some regards, serve as a catalyst, something that encouraged other smalls businesses to open their doors on Main Street, as well.

But yesterday, I learned that the Greenport Theater had an effect on the town that I’m not sure my father, God rest his soul, could have anticipated.

I visited the theater and spoke with the two young men working at it that evening, both of whom were locals.

I let them know that I was there to visit because of my family’s history with the theater.

Beaming, they quickly began to share how they’d personally taken care of the facility over the last few years.

One was a creative and a handyman, and he pointed out all of the little flourishes he’d added to the interior of the theater.

The other told me about how the theater had become a non-profit. People from the area donate to keep it open, because, as he described, many were sad when it was closed for a few years. He seemed proud to play a role in running it now.

As I perused the revitalized theater, one that still maintains some of its physical character from when it was built almost 100 years ago, I felt a certain sense of peace, as I was more assured than ever that there is something within the human spirit that makes us want to preserve beautiful things from our culture.

And what came to mind as I reflected on this experience was perspective from Paco de la India, a man of culture if you will, someone who traveled the world for two years (predominantly on bitcoin) just a few years back.

I interviewed him for a piece I wrote for *Forbes* on Bitcoin adoption in Perú about his visit to the country, where he spent time with communities living in remote regions that used Bitcoin as day-to-day money and for saving.

When I asked Paco what using Bitcoin had done for the people of these communities, he shared that it was helping them to “preserve their culture.”

“They [now] have some liberty to dream, which was just getting wiped away by the [traditional] financial system,” Paco also shared.

He added that they were also starting small businesses, buying modest lots of land, and generally lowering their time preference (something that can propel the process of civilization).

I love the idea of these Peruvians dreaming and taking action accordingly, as it reminds me of my father, who was also very much a dreamer and who would work diligently to bring his ideas to life — even while raising four children.

What he and many of us these days are up against in actualizing our dreams is the fiat system disadvantaging small business owners and eroding our culture in turn.

The fiat system encourages the Starbucksification and Walmartization of everything. These sorts of companies have financial and political leverage because of the fiat system, and they wipe out the mom and pops out there who don’t have access to the same leverage, sucking the life out of downtowns in the process.

I advocate for a world on a bitcoin standard because, like my father, I believe in the revival of Main Streets. A world in which money retains value and the cost of capital for major companies is much higher is a world in which small business owners are more empowered.

This is the type of world in which I want to live.

So, like my father who stepped away from building multiplexes, which inherently lack some of the character and charm of smaller theaters, to build and operate community theaters, I continue to make effort to give less of my energy to the fiat system (which is more than just our monetary and financial systems — it affects politics, health, psychology, etc.) and to build, document, and advocate for a new system — Bitcoin — in which culture can be revived.

I believe that deep within all of us exists a desire to create, build, prosper, and serve our community.

The fiat system makes it more difficult to do these things.

Bitcoin makes it easier.

I sat down with Jeff Booth (nprofile…w2ua) to discuss the impact Bitcoin might have on the world ten years from now for the 2036 issue of BitcoinMagazine (nprofile…wvc3).

In approaching the conversation, I was excited to hear Jeff's forecast for what a world transformed by Bitcoin over the course of the next decade might look like.

What Jeff offered wasn't a prediction, though.

Instead, he recommended that, if we want a world transformed by Bitcoin, we become active participants this new system NOW as opposed to passive bystanders waiting for the world to change.

In other words, the degree to which Bitcoin succeeds by 2036 will be a consequence of the decisions that each of us makes in each passing moment, and the piece below offers some key insights regarding what to keep in mind while making those decisions.

It just needs more and more people to use it as it was intended to be used — as freedom money.

And most of the people using it as such and teaching others to use it in such a manner, those who are building circular economies, are too busy to sit around pondering and crafting Bitcoin’s next narrative.

Firstly, they understand that talk is cheap.

Secondly, there’s no need for them to formulate a narrative, because they ARE the Bitcoin story.

They’re the ones showing the world that Bitcoin wasn’t created to be an asset trapped within a broken system but a new protocol for money and freedom.

So, if you really want to see bitcoin’s “price” rebound, take this “bear market” as an opportunity to educate people how to use bitcoin as it was intended to be used — as peer-to-peer electronic cash.

YIL that Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker, who just signed a bill that mandates a 0.2% tax on companies transacting with or storing crypto, once had five toilets removed from his second mansion as part of a tax fraud scheme.

He had the mansion rendered “uninhabitable” so to pay significantly less in property taxes. He ended up not paying over $500k he otherwise would have had to have paid (until he got caught and had to pay some of that money back).

The point is that the person who wants to make it more costly for reputable Illinois-based Bitcoin companies like strike (nprofile…9pf8) to do business is also the person who isn’t a fan of paying taxes himself.

He immediately struck me as a person of high integrity and someone who is deeply intentional.

As an entrepreneur, community leader, and educator, he helps people to become more autonomous and sees #Bitcoin as a tool to help facilitate that autonomy.

This is why he's not only incorporated Bitcoin and Bitcoin-related philosophy and principles (e.g., low-time preference, self sovereignty) into his companies and educational efforts but has helped onboard 150 merchants in the region of #Brazil in which he lives to Bitcoin in less than two years.

The South African government is proposing regulations that would essentially ban Bitcoin in South Africa 🇿🇦

The regulations resemble U.S. Executive Order 6102, which made it a criminal offense for U.S. citizens to own or trade most forms of gold.

And because the language in the regulations is vague, they could potentially give the South African government sweeping authority to do everything from pushing for forced confiscation of bitcoin to only allowing bitcoin transactions through regulated entities that require KYC/AML.

The good news is that South African Bitcoiners, including Hermann Vivier ( vryfokkenou (nprofile…x4kz) ) of bitcoinekasi (nprofile…efkk) and groups like the Property Rights Defense Group are pushing back.

As I wrote the piece in the post below, I felt the same sort of excitement that I felt when I first wrote about the work of Lorraine Marcel, founder of Bitcoin Dada, years ago.

The feeling was similar to what I used to feel when I'd discover new talent in the music business (a former career of mine). It's a sense that you're in the presence of someone with incredible talent and vision — a rockstar, so to speak.

This is who Thandi Mtemang'ombe is, and the work she's doing in Malawi 🇲🇼 via the Women of Satoshi Cooperative is both incredibly important and deeply inspiring.

I agree with what Gupta said. It’s very hard to divorce anything from political ideology.

Agreed that more from the political right tend to enter this space and that Trump only supercharged that trend.

We’ll see if the Bitcoin voters who supported him will feel that he delivered enough for them in retrospect.

As someone who documents #Bitcoin adoption around the globe, I was surprised that I hadn't known more about the incredible work that the team from Bitcoin Research ( bitcoinr3 (nprofile…vs6w) ) is doing in #Bolivia 🇧🇴 until I recently researched it and communicated with a member of the team.

Not only are the Bitcoin Research team members — Achachilabtc, jpcr3spo (nprofile…87xd), and gmelendrez (nprofile…f8sd) — avid Bitcoin educators, but they also work closely with developers to help develop Bitcoin tools specifically for the Bolivian context (tools like a version of Mostro (nprofile…x9nm) for Bolivians). The team also even contrubutes to academic literature on Bitcoin.

More than anything though, I can tell that the work that the Bitcoin Research team does comes directly from the heart and out of genuine concern for their fellow countrypeople.

And so it was an honor to document this work in a piece I recently published for Fedi (nprofile…8lx5) below.
