It needs to be seen as a need, the same as heating in winter. Sure, some wonderfully fit and healthy people can live without either, but for the rest of us, we need it. Especially with weather extremes.

Would still vote for you. 😁 No pressure…. Ahem…

      In reply to nevent1q…qy59
_________________________

Not strictly “bugs”, but if broader entomology is their thing…

CW: spiders

Jumping spiders are some of the most intelligent of all spiders, but sadly their lifespans are shorter than their less intelligent relatives. It is thought that it might be due to the energetic demands of not only jumping but their evolution in developing this intelligence.

Bold jumping spiders (Phidippus audax) are named because of how they will happily (and peacefully) investigate a human if the human offers out a hand or something to explore. Other species are usually more cautious. They also have absolutely stunning iridescent chelicerae. And the white marks on the upper side of some individuals’ abdomens can look like a happy face, like this: :D

These spiders can also be trained and learn quickly. This is probably due to their style of attacking prey by jumping being very risky, so they use all their eyes, each pair being adapted to take in different information like distance or movement, and calculate how, where and when to jump… and whether it is safe! Some of their prey species use Batesian mimicry - where a harmless species evolved to look like another species that has dangerous defences, without actually evolving the dangerous defences.

These spiders are adorable (this is coming from me, a lifelong arachnophobe), especially when they make hilariously bad errors in their jumps, or turn to look at you when you’re around and talk to them. They’re not always “bold” as their name suggests, but just curious, and can often be very cautious and even get scared by their prey!

Lucas the Spider is a cartoon spider based on jumping spiders and goes a long way to show the cuteness and the trials and tribulations of these smol but impressive spoods. 💚

We are both yogis (hence the mandala), and he adores dragonflies (has a tattoo of one over his heart).

I drew this in secret while he was away at work or on trips and gave it to him on his birthday. He cried happy tears. 🥲

I have since entered it into a tiny local art competition where it won first prize. Yikes! I hated winning over other great and unique entries so much that I will never enter another art competition again.

#ArtAdventCalendar

This was in preparation for the beaver drawing I shared yesterday.

I had never used those nifty pencil eraser pens before, and wanted to check I knew all the varieties of pencils that I had before I started. It had been a few years since my previous significant drawing, and many years before that… very glad I dusted off my skills beforehand.

I was certainly ready to procrastinate forevermore on drawing the final picture because it was so daunting due to relying on accurately drawn textures rather than easier-to-draw shading and outlines. I had never drawn detailed fur or water ripples before… this seems to be a theme for my art! Why do I do this to myself?! 🤣

#ArtAdventCalendar

A beaver!

The back story is my mum wanted a gift for her 70th and explicitly asked me for some art of mine. She didn’t even mind if it was ‘old’ art. But I couldn’t exactly give her a rough sketchbook page.

She had been such a great supporter of my undergrad zoology degree (2020-2024), even coming with me on a muddy December afternoon to traipse round a new local beaver enclosure. I had chosen to do a mini dissertation about beaver ecology and created my own field trip. My mum tried to memorise all the facts about beavers while we were there! Her enthusiasm fed into mine and I ended up doing some of my best work and winning an academic prize for it in the process. So I HAD to draw a beaver for her!

#ArtAdventCalendar

There was no chance I could do this from memory 😅 Photos included below.

Also never drawn an owl before. As I mentioned yesterday, horses were my usual subjects so I’m very much learning all other subjects! I wish I rounded the wing tips better, they look too pointed in my sketch. They really do have long, rounded-rectangle-like wings! Quite thick and boxy looking. Drawing really helps me see details like these, even when I can’t quite depict them in my sketches.

#ArtAdventCalendar

But, I can’t.

I have an artist’s block that relates to the fact horses have and always will be my autistic special interest, and that I’ve been bullied and judged for it since I turned about 12 when I “should have grown out of it”. From then, I learned I must hide it to survive.

People who know me very well today often don’t realise just how deep my love of horses runs, how knowledgable I became, and how I miss time with horses like I miss a piece of my soul.

Here’s to every artist who has ever experienced a block. ❤️🐎

The star might be a bit easier to see in this photo than my earlier art with the ocean wave.

I took these two with me on an epic trip around the USA. Both approaches require skill.

I’d say sometimes I want to fill in all the details and create an accurate depiction of the subject (hello to my autistic side!) and other times I want the same quality of picture but faster and more fun (hello to my ADHD side!)

This sketch took just a few minutes of playing and looks quite different to my more detailed art. I dream of having a dedicated space for art one day where I can do similar with paint on a huge canvas, the space allowing me to use big gestures with my arms and not be confined to little movements of my hand.
#ArtAdventCalendar

Even in February.

I can tell this is an unfinished sketch because of how light the pencil is - I usually go back over some details to help certain features stand out. But doors are not my passion and this was just practice.

I think next time I might even try using a bit of artistic licence to build out the sparse plant next to the door so that it frames the door a bit more. But sometimes, I will admit, I prefer to sketch an accurate “truth” of what I saw rather than aim for a pleasing result.

#ArtAdventCalendar

I think so. And I find it incredibly challenging!

I find it hard to carry a larger camera with lenses, but enjoy playing when I have the chance or just using my phone most other times. I have one very old, very well travelled dSLR camera and that’s enough for me. But I do not have a steady hand, quick reactions nor a brain to decipher settings (despite several short courses, including in the last few years!) I used to love graphic design and editing but haven’t had the patience for a decade or more. I’m a point-and-click’er now! And that’s OK by me.

So here are some swallow fledglings from 2022. I was as careful as I could be to preserve important characteristics of this original coin, a Buffalo nickel (USA), but this mint (i.e. me, the artist, not an actual mint) is rather… ahem… imperfect! 😁 I adore animals and so the bison got most of my love and attention, and the lettering… well… was “creative”?!

#ArtAdventCalendar

They’re not ideal for a finished piece due to the cut and lack of fine grain sanding, etc., but great for building skills since it will be tricker to work with it!

With pyrography, not only is your pen tethered by the cable that powers it, disturbing the weight distribution in your hand, but you also need to pay close attention to speed, pressure, temperature, draughts, and wood grains. The type of wood makes a big difference too: pine burns quickly!

#ArtAdventCalendar

Part of my first ever commissioned artwork, so I was slightly sad to part with it but delighted it was received well.

I’ve done lots of detailed artwork in the past but never like this. It was my first time creating a miniature. It’s a partial copy of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai (1831).

I used a slice of oak branch that I sourced myself from a small dead branch off a local tree. Note the star in the centre of the wood and the natural ray-like lines in the wood around it. I didn’t want to hide these details so did not paint the sky, but instead left the wood behind visible.

A personal share about some realisations I’ve had: I am taking stock of something that I’ve been told many times, but never actually believed…

I am apparently great at researching topics, I go very deep and even digest a lot of up-to-date scientific and technical information rather well.

I do this much more than the average person, and it is likely because I’m autistic, with a healthy dose of ADHD hyperfixation thrown into the mix!

What does being neurodivergent have to do with this? Well, I hate unexpected things because I cannot cope well with them so I research heavily in advance of something new to empower me. I also don’t fully understand superficial explanations of things like NT folk seem to. If anything, superficial explanations leave me much more confused than no explanations at all, so I go deep to learn about them instead. Oh, and I also find enjoyment in learning, generally, about science and technology, and it plays to my strengths.

However… there is a specific aspect to being like this that I hadn’t considered until now.

I think I intimidate some medical professionals. 😶 I do not mean to AT ALL. I actually assume they have at least the same knowledge if not much better because they’re the experts, not me. This assumption is part of the problem. I seem to get disappointed in conversations with them because I can’t understand why they would talk about out-of-date ideas or they wouldn’t know about and understand a major recent break through in something relevant. I think this is causing tension in my conversations with them.

What to do? I think I need to broach conversations like these with an open mind about the level of knowledge of the experts I speak with. I am holding them to a standard that they may not be able to achieve - e.g. why would a generalist like a GP spend their time researching one, single complex medical condition and know the latest published science about it? Some may know about it, sure, most would not. Also, when speaking with a non-medical member of staff who specialises in my medical condition, I need to remember they might not be able to read and digest the medical research like I seem to be able to.

I am not an expert like either of these people - but I seem to come with my own knowledge or skills that they do not, and that is REALLY surprising to me.

But I must remember this - for better conversations AND to give myself credit for all I do to seek a better quality of life for myself. I always assume that what I know will be out-of-date or incorrect in some way because these medical-related skills are only very recent skills for me, a forty-something-year-old person!

I hope I can keep sharing the benefits of these skills so that others with similar health challenges can benefit too. Without a doubt a lot of this came from doing my recent undergraduate degree that included many human biology topics. But I am still not an expert and not medically trained. So it is rather like all this is a special interest, except it’s driven more by necessity than joy… even if I do find enjoyment along the way, especially in the form of hope for my future. I’d much rather be doing other things with my time, but hope keeps me going while I have a chronic illness that holds me back.

Also: I HIGHLY suspect I’m not the only chronically ill person who has developed some great knowledge / skills in this way and experienced these challenges, neurodivergent or not. I’d be really interested to hear of others’ experiences and tips about how to navigate the disappointments and keep conversations tension-free! 😅

Actually Autistics (npub1pce…geep) ME/CFS (npub1m6m…xked)
#ActuallyAutistic #ADHD

Right. So. I went from zero walks in September to 3 in the previous 4 days. Only short, gentle ambles round the corner and back… but…

What changed?

Remembering how to *truly* rest.

Apparently my usual ways of winding down and switching off don’t work anywhere near as well for me as either reading a book or watching nature (in this case, just gazing out the window or at our little yarden is enough.)

The latter is “undirected attention”, and has been a MAJOR missing piece to my deliberate rest time most of my adult life (as a kid I would be in nature or with animals as much as I was allowed and did this loads!)

I discovered the idea thanks to stumbling across this article in The Conversation:

https://theconversation.com/how-letting-your-mind-wander-can-reset-your-brain-259854

Many of you will know this already, but please share this information widely!

“If your dog will jump in the nearest river, pond or lake given half a chance, don’t use spot-on treatments for fleas and ticks, say researchers.”

Flea treatments on dogs are effective because they are extremely strong invertebrate killers in their tiny doses AND they are designed to last a long time. These same benefits are exactly what makes them a nature-killing nightmare for aquatic life and wildlife that eats them including birds. If you need to use topical flea treatment (preferably this is only if they currently have fleas, NOT as a year-round preventative which is an outdated practice now): keep your dog out of all wild water, even ephemeral ponds, for as many *months* as you can, and dispose of shedded dog hair in the bin (can kill chicks if used as nesting materials).

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2482650-dogs-pollute-water-with-pesticides-even-weeks-after-flea-treatment/ #dogs #dogsofmastodon #dogstodon

I’m putting it out there: I really wish I knew some coding people who are not cis male that I could look up to, be inspired by. I am yet again surround by cis males in tech on my course - and they are truly brilliant and inspiring - but I feel like I don’t belong and shouldn’t be here.

The people I am seeking to follow and be inspired by are those who “code first” (not sure how to describe that, hence the quotes) and didn’t adopt more of a PR or front-facing role, mostly leaving coding behind as the vast majority of females I know in tech eventually did. (And a reason why I felt I also didn’t belong in tech or coding and should follow them, after I was told all I do as a web dev who directly helped my employer’s entire business scale up is “just pretty things up”).

So: who are some non cis males whose career is centred on coding excellence who I could follow online somehow? Really not sure of the right words to describe this, so please rephrase “coding excellence” if you need - I mean people who mostly just want to code, be great at code, inspire others to be great too, they could teach or not, lecture or not, just hang out online, whatever. Their actual job could be in almost ANY industry, not just software dev or similar.

#coding #softwaredevelopment #webdevelopment #coders #diversityintech

Who wants an update on my ADHD-fuelled purchase of far too many bulbs for our tiny garden?! Yes, I know you do. 😆

Recap:

A few months ago, I got excited when I saw a deal online for 500 spring bulbs for £11.99, delivered. I bought them very quickly!! Thanks ADHD brain!

Then, that led to a purchase of a pyramid planter for more space to plant said bulbs, because of course we didn’t actually have space for 500 bulbs. We customised the planter by buying and attaching a trough on the back for water and adding some wicking ropes, drilled holes into the planter troughs for the ropes to lay in the bottom of the soil to keep plants hydrated in summer, save water, etc. Then needed to buy 4 x bags of compost!!

We managed to plant quite a lot of bulbs already a couple of weeks ago, but had more to go!

Since then:

A recent revelation is that I actually bought some wild flower seeds as a fun holiday gift for my partner and TOTALLY forgot, so we also have those to scatter in either spring or autumn! (Totally forgot I bought those because I hid them in a drawer!) So I’ll have to see where we are with space to scatter those in a few months! Maybe some bulbs won’t grow, maybe some plants will have gone over by autumn. Haha… hmm!! 🤣

And then, well… we just bought another two troughs. Not that big, but enough for about 30 small bulbs each, closely spaced.

So that £11.99 is now a LOT more than £11.99 hahaha! Probably coming close to spending £200 now LMAO! OOPS!

Today, we just planted the last bulbs that we could fit into the garden, new troughs and remaining pots!! Yay!!

There are maybe 100-150 spare bulbs of about 4 different types, so we did pretty well! We were definitely sent more bulbs than we bought, though, so it was more than 500 total. Hoping to be able to give away the rest and not waste them. Wish me luck!!

Omg this has been the most hilarious journey. But it’ll be the most bountiful floral display in spring if all goes to plan!! 🤣🤣

From: JB 🐎 :neuro: (npub15ur…fxs2)
https://beige.party/@AnAutieAtUni/113657694768620417

Every pain has different sensations so I don’t find them easy to put on a linear scale. Sometimes people say you can gauge pain by how much it hampers your life - that might be helpful, but it’s also quite vague. E.g. “does the pain keep you awake at night?” Well, for me, a cold breeze across my skin can wake me up, and while that’s extremely uncomfortable that doesn’t seem like pain, so how can I compare?! Hmm!

The autistic trait that is the most dangerous (to myself) is how naive I am.

I don’t deliberately choose to trust people, but apparently I do. I always think I’m being smart and checking for suspicious clues toward danger with other people, but this is not done using intuition. It is done based on learning from my past, or learning from a set of rules. I’m not good at extrapolating those rules to identify warning signs in new situations that differ from my past or the rules.

I tend to fall for things that make it seem like I intentionally use rose-tinted glasses - I.e. that I only want to see the good in people and things. But it’s not intentional. I don’t get those all-important signals when something isn’t right. I miss them.

I hate the feeling when I realise I’ve done it again and been blindsided for a long time by something that was dark or malicious and I didn’t have a clue. I can’t type out here the traumas that have occurred specifically with men. I don’t think I’ve ever had the equivalent happen with non-cis-het men. This means the patriarchal world, especially one where my bosses, tutors, lecturers, colleagues, peers, (some) family and more… dominate thanks to tradition. No, I don’t want to apply to work with yet another potential predator… but I need money.

[Edit to add:]
The worst is that my naivety seems to ATTRACT men. I’ve even been told this. It’s apparently like a beacon of pure innocence. They’re drawn to me either to exploit me or occasionally rescue me in that deeply disempowering way.
[/Edit]

I try to lean on people I trust and borrow their senses and intuition, but women generally don’t tolerate me, and least of all when I’m in need of support, and so I’m usually left to trusting men for this.

I have strong emotional empathy (I sense and feel the emotions of others, usually intensely) but I think I have little cognitive empathy (I rarely have a sense of why people do or feel what they do unless I’ve been told this or it’s a near-exact repeat of a past experience).

I often feel as socially vulnerable as a child. But I’m a 40-something. I want to have the autonomy and respect of my years, but I wish it was easier to get (safe) support for my child-like automatic trust system.

Can anyone relate?

ActuallyAutistic group (npub10v4…s27h)

      I FINALLY OFFICIALLY GRADUATED!!! 🎉

Oh my goodness, what an absolute relief. Got official documents in digital form (and shareable) so I can begin next steps with my next uni.

And now the deep exhaustion that follows that immense relief. Aaaaahhhhh I am so relieved. Almost 2 months since my course ended. I’ve kept myself very busy to try to keep my mind busy during that time, but it means I’ve also been making myself exhausted in other ways.

Noticing that the mental processing of this massive life milestone is humongous! Been needing naps and sleep like never before. Nice to feel “normal” tiredness for a change, though, rather than usual ME/CFS fatigue that doesn’t reduce with sleep. I forgot how peaceful normal tiredness feels.

ActuallyAutistic group (npub10v4…s27h)

From: JB 🐎 :neuro: (npub15ur…fxs2)
https://beige.party/@AnAutieAtUni/112796060148738661

      Question for ADHD’ers:

Is anxiety a common thing to have alongside ADHD? Question for ADHD’ers:

(Trying to be smart and ask this question now, not after struggling for months like I did after my autism assessment.)

What helped support you most to process everything after you received a diagnosis of ADHD?

I’m talking about after having had an assessment with a clinician and receiving an official diagnosis of ADHD. (Self diagnosis is valid, etc etc. See my quoted post below. My experience of self-dx has been generally easier, so I’m asking specifically about after an assessment, which is more like an event in itself.)

Obviously, there’s nothing available for me from the place I got assessed, damnit. So I’m needing to figure out what to do myself. Realising I have many questions, doing a lot of questioning, too. Feeling the same as after the autism assessment a few years ago: my life has been assessed with all its challenges, I’ve been given a label and now I’m expected to just carry on. I’m massively grateful, but it’s a lot to take in. How do I begin to process it…

actuallyadhd group (npub148j…ucy6) ActuallyAutistic group (npub10v4…s27h)

From: JB 🐎 :neuro: (npub15ur…fxs2)
https://beige.party/@AnAutieAtUni/112684117363810968
