Last night I tested my reverse engineered ImageWriter II/LQ LocalTalk Option card and it mostly worked after a lot of trial/error - turned out I needed to clone the NVSRAM from the original board. Way more testing still ahead especially around chip variants to make a cost reduced SMT version. #ImageScribbler

We took off from Anchorage right after midnight and were treated to an amazing show of the aurora borealis for most of our trip back home! I’ve never been able to see aurora with my naked eye before so this was really special. It had an overly bright CRT and I wasn't confident enough to fix it. I finally opened it back up a few weeks ago to pilfer one of the 3 5.25" drives inside for a Greaseweazle so I just kept going and got the computer working again.

It gets stuck in the up position but tapping it with a finger gets the disk to read! I finally am able to read this disk that I’ve carted around for decades! This is a pretty early disk with an oval window and locking shutter (you squeeze the corner of the disk to release it).

Poking at the HP-150 again because it has problems reading floppy disks. This is basically the first ever 3.5” floppy mechanism- it’s not even double sided! I managed to find an extra on eBay for not too much money, amazingly. When putting it in it’s totally dead so it’ll have to serve as a parts drive.

This was the first modem I ever used - a Concord Data Systems 224. My original one is long gone so I’ve been waiting for a cheap one to show up on eBay forever and one finally showed up. This modem opened whole new worlds for me and I hope to see those RXD/TXD lights blinking again on this one! This one is actually slightly fancier than the one we had since it has autodial. Ours lacked that feature so I had to dial the phone myself and hit the DATA button when I heard the modem on the other side

They had a CAD system that ran on these and an HP minicomputer that they connected to at an office across the country on a leased line. By the early 90s the HP-150s sat around derelict in storage so I took one home and used it as a dumb terminal (it has a terminal in ROM!) to dial into BBSes and a Unix shell account.

At #VCFMW, I managed to get one of my grail computers: the HP-150. It has an 8088 CPU, runs MS-DOS, but isn’t IBM compatible. It has a rudimentary touchscreen and is arguably the first computer to use the 3.5” floppy disk. It’s kind of an all-in-one: the computer is in the box with the monitor. The box it’s sitting on just has the floppy and hard drives in it.

Cool thrift store find: a Keithley bench multimeter. Seems like it works just fine (DC voltage matches my Fluke 87V at least) and I love the 70s era design of it. I just need to get probes that don’t have shrouds over the banana plugs so I can plug them in. Or I guess I can cut the shrouds off some I already have.

So I took a couple screencaps from the game, nearest neighbor scaled them down and cropped them to 320x200, converted to PCX and copied them over to my IBM PC/AT on floppy disk. This is a real EGA monitor and you can see the beautiful scanlines. Now I can imagine what it'd be like to play the game on an old PC back in the day. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1098770/The_Crimson_Diamond/

With today's announcement of the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 and #RP2350, I'm happy to say that the Pico 2 works great on #PicoGUS 1.2 with just a few source tweaks! While the Pico 2 is cool and the extra horsepower gets us tantalizingly close to emulating the OPL3 synth, the RP2350 also brings some great stuff that you can't really use when it's on the Pico 2: memory-mapped PSRAM expansion with cache, and MORE GPIOS. Real life has gotten in the way of creating a design around it, but I'll get there!

The main US seller of #PicoGUS is Joe at JCM-1.com and tonight he's having a vendor update stream going on at 9PM EDT time. I can't make the stream live but I'll "be" there with a little video showing off some of the latest features that have shipped in PicoGUS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGL2LZ34AcQ

Getting back into getting WiFi support tidied up for release for #PicoGUS. This is a little funny because it doesn't work on the PicoGUS 2.0 boards - only the original PicoGUS 1.x boards that you can plug a Pico-W into. Anyway you can set the SSID and password and get the connection status with pgusinit, and it'll work on whatever an NE2000 works on: DOS, Win3.x, Win9x, Linux, NeXTStep, OS/2, pretty much anything.
