RAM definitely feels like the first limitation on this machine, not the CPU. I already managed to get LND and lightning.pub running on it, but I stopped there because I didn’t have enough sats to fund a channel and actually test Lightning properly. If I revisit the setup, keeping the chain on an external SSD sounds like the right way to do it.

I especially like the idea of keeping antiX as a normal desktop while also turning the netbook into a small self hosted lab in the background. At this point I think the problem will be deciding what to try first. 😂 Thanks, these suggestions are giving the old machine a completely new purpose.

I managed to get LND and lightning.pub running on the netbook after quite a bit of trial and error. I didn’t have any sats in the wallet, so I couldn’t really test actual Lightning transactions, but getting the whole setup running at all felt like a small win. 😄 So I can definitely see this machine ending up as a little always on Bitcoin and Lightning box eventually.

I think they just become more selective. After a few years, you probably stop needing every “what is Bitcoin?” episode and start looking for deeper technical discussions, market structure, Lightning, mining, self custody or just people whose thinking you trust. So maybe it’s less “moving on” and more “filtering harder.” I’d actually be curious to hear from people who’ve been listening for 5+ years too.

A lightweight CalDAV/CardDAV server actually fits this little netbook project really well, especially if it’s already available in the antiX repositories. So now I have Databag for messaging and Radicale for calendar/contacts to experiment with 😄 I think this machine is slowly turning into a tiny self hosted lab. Thanks, these are exactly the kind of lightweight projects I wanted to discover.

What should I install or try on antiX?

I’ve been using antiX on an old netbook with an Intel Atom N455 and 2 GB RAM, and so far I’m really happy with how light and responsive it feels.

Now I want to explore it a bit more.

What are some apps, tools or small utilities you think are worth installing on antiX? I’m especially interested in lightweight software that works well on old hardware.

It can be anything: system tools, radio/music apps, small games, file managers, terminal tools, desktop tweaks or just something fun to experiment with.

I’m not looking for heavy software. I’d rather find useful or interesting things that fit the whole lightweight antiX idea.

Any recommendations? The machine has an Intel Atom N455 at 1.66 GHz, 1 core / 2 threads and only 2 GB RAM. I wanted to find the most suitable lightweight Linux distribution for this old hardware, so I tested antiX, Puppy Linux and Bodhi one after another from USB on the same netbook. I tried to use them in roughly the same way and pushed each system a little to see how they behaved under the same limited hardware.

**Puppy Linux (TrixiePup64 Retro)**
Next I tried Puppy. The first surprise was RAM usage. While idle, it was already using around 1.2 GB out of the available 2 GB. At that point Puppy was already in a difficult position for me, but I continued testing anyway. When I started pushing the system harder, things went downhill quickly. Before Chromium could properly open, I ended up with a black screen. I restarted and tried again, thinking it might have been a one time error, but the system still struggled under load. Chromium also seemed to put noticeably more pressure on the CPU. So Puppy was eliminated.

**Bodhi**
Bodhi surprised me the most. At idle, it actually used less RAM than antiX. That immediately made me think I should not dismiss it too quickly. I connected to the internet, opened the browser and started adding tabs. Even then, RAM usage still looked very good. Then I did the same test I had done with the others and opened 6 different websites in 6 tabs. From a pure RAM usage point of view, Bodhi looked excellent. But RAM was not the only thing I cared about. Usability mattered more. With antiX, opening the same tabs did not create noticeable lag. With Bodhi, lag started after around the third tab and the fan began spinning much faster. I do not expect miracles from this netbook. I was simply trying to find the operating system that suited it best. And that is where antiX won.

**Result**
Bodhi surprised me the most. I understand Recover is opt in, but not being able to inspect the firmware still means putting some trust in Ledger’s implementation. If Trezor were easily available in Türkiye, I would seriously consider it for that reason. Unfortunately it is much harder to get here. I clearly need to learn more about how Ledger Recover and the firmware model actually work before making a final decision. And hearing this from someone who has held their own keys since 2015 definitely gives me something to think about.

Availability is a big part of the decision for me. In Türkiye, getting some hardware wallets is much harder than others, so waiting indefinitely for the “perfect” device does not make much sense either. And I completely agree about the seed. Whatever device I choose, my plan is to keep the seed offline and never type it into a computer or phone. Buying directly from the manufacturer would be ideal too, although that part can be a little more complicated from Türkiye.

I finally got my own solo mining pool running.

At first, the goal was simple: build it, connect a miner, and see if it actually works.

Then it happened.

We found a block. 😂

Was it economically sensible? Absolutely.

There is something very satisfying about seeing a system you built actually find a real block.

Next goal: make the whole setup cleaner, more stable, and keep mining. ⚡⛏️

#Bitcoin #Mining #SoloMining #BuildInPublic

I’m thinking about buying a Ledger Nano S Plus as my first hardware wallet. I often hear people say Trezor is better, but in Türkiye Ledger is much easier to find. In Türkiye we now have: wss://relay.nostr.org.tr/ It may be small, but that is kind of the point. A local relay can help Turkish users find each other, keep local conversations easier to discover, and slowly build a community around shared language and context. Maybe Nostr adoption does not have to begin with one giant public square. Maybe it starts with many small rooms that are actually worth entering.

If your DM walk starts completing more reliably after you add a second round, that would be a strong sign that the issue was the query itself rather than missing data. I also think your point about redundancy makes sense. The fewer relays you rely on, the more important an extra query round becomes.

It took me a while to understand that Nostr is not really “a social network” in the usual sense. That was probably the point when it became much more interesting to me. 😄

I ended up emailing Kinder/Ferrero about something I’ve been wondering for a while. 😄

When I look at Kinder Surprise and Kinder Joy in other countries, I keep seeing collectible licensed series like Star Wars, One Piece and other character based figures. Here in Türkiye, we often get much simpler toys instead. I understand that assortments can differ by country, but I’m genuinely curious why Türkiye seems to miss many of these major licensed collections. I actually asked Ferrero whether this is due to licensing, market strategy, costs or regional product allocation. Now I’m waiting to see if they give me a real answer. At this rate, I’m almost going to start asking Nostr for help finding the Kinder figures I’m looking for. 😂

Anyone here collecting Kinder toys?

#asknostr #kinder #collectibles #turkiye

For me the hardest ones to replace would probably be Windows, some hardware drivers, a few productivity tools and certain services that simply work better in the ecosystems I already use. I could move a lot of my stack to open source, but running my entire digital life that way would still require too many compromises.

I’d feel a bit strange trying to explain it to friends or family before I fully understand how everything works here. 😄 It was the same for me with the first social networks. I learned how they worked first, then I could help my parents, my wife and friends use them. So I think I’ll probably do the same with Nostr. First I need to understand it properly myself, then I can explain it without confusing everyone. 😄

An open blockchain does not automatically mean the interpretation built on top of it is open too. If analytics tools can influence compliance, investigations or even legal conclusions, then the assumptions and heuristics behind those conclusions should be open to scrutiny as well. Otherwise we end up trusting the interpreter instead of verifying the method.

If it solves something for you, teaches you something, or makes your own workflow easier, that already gives it value. That’s how I ended up building my signer. I needed one for my own Nostr use, so I started building it. It still has bugs, and every time something breaks I end up learning another part of Nostr while trying to fix it. For me, that process is the useful part.

It is whether the system naturally forces value to move outside the existing group. A Bitcoin miner eventually has real bills to pay, so some of the BTC earned has to leave the miner’s hands. With staking, there may be much less pressure to do that because both the cost and the reward stay inside the same asset. So the electricity bill, which normally looks like Bitcoin’s weakness, may also be one of the things that keeps the system connected to the outside world. At least that is how I understood it. 😄

A small tool could check your own notes against each of your write relays and show which ones actually have the event and which ones are missing. For older notes I’d call the status MISSING rather than DROPPED, because we cannot know whether the relay never received it, rejected it, or removed it later. If the event still exists on another relay, the same signed event could also be resent to the missing relay. I actually like this idea enough to build a small tool around it. 😄

I bought the same USB drive only about two and a half months ago. I simply didn’t need another one during that time, so I never checked the price again. Seeing it roughly 250% higher today was the part that shocked me. The data center buildout explanation does make sense though. If more production capacity is being pulled toward large scale computing and server demand, consumer storage getting squeezed would explain a lot.

Your point is about mining improving the economics of the grid itself, while I was looking at it more from the individual miner’s side. The additional revenue angle is interesting though. Grid stabilization and heat reuse especially make mining feel less like a single purpose operation and more like part of a broader energy system. That is probably the part I need to learn more about.

So if I understand correctly, my client can still talk to your relay like a normal NIP 50 search relay, while the NIP 85 provider is what gives your relay the trust data needed to filter the results. Does my application need to implement any NIP 85 specific logic itself, or is it enough for my npub to subscribe to a provider like Brainstorm and then connect to your relay normally? If it is the second case, that is actually exactly what I need.

I’d still be interested in using it as a search relay, but if the relay stores everything, then spam that matches the topic I’m searching for could still end up in the result set unless the WoT filtering is strong enough. So for me the real test would be search quality under heavy spam, not just whether the relay can technically return results.

If a parent’s mental condition creates a serious and immediate risk to a child, courts or child protection authorities can usually intervene in custody or contact arrangements. Even if I had solar panels and effectively free electricity, I still couldn’t mine Bitcoin without an ASIC miner. So for me, access to mining hardware is just as important as access to cheap energy. And ASIC miners are not exactly cheap either, which makes the entry barrier even higher.

Buying BTC is one thing. Building a business that can keep generating cash and continue buying BTC without constantly depending on new financing is something else entirely. If the underlying business is weak, the treasury strategy eventually becomes dependent on leverage, issuance or market conditions. A company that can fund Bitcoin accumulation from real operating cash flow seems much more sustainable over the long term.

That is the point I was trying to make. Owning the file is not enough if access to it depends on hardware, software or formats you no longer control. Digital sovereignty is not only about what you own. It is also about whether you still have the means to reach it. And in my case, that old MS-DOS PC and the floppy disks are still working today. 😄 That is probably why I think so much about preserving the means of access, not just the data itself.

Before USB we had DVDs, before DVDs CDs, before CDs floppy disks. I still have an old MS-DOS computer at home that can boot from floppy. So my rule would be: don’t only preserve the data, preserve a way to read it. I’d use FAT32 for compatibility, encrypt the important files, keep a plain README with recovery instructions, and store only things that are hard to replace: family photos, documents, source code, research, keys/recovery info and essential tools. And yes, I’d also keep an old USB capable computer somewhere. If I managed to keep a floppy machine alive this long, I can probably keep a USB machine too. 😄

A useful explanation at the right moment can be worth much more than a long article you struggle through for days. And yes, I think that is exactly why I still remember that first 100 sats. It was not really about the amount. It was the feeling that something I shared had been useful enough for someone to send value back. That part of zaps is starting to make much more sense to me.

A small zap feels much more meaningful when it is tied to something that genuinely saved time or solved a problem. I also like the idea of 21–100 sats as a simple “this helped” signal. That makes zaps feel less like tipping and more like feedback with value attached.

Bob Burnett has clearly been involved from the very beginning, so the transition does not look like someone completely new stepping in. At the same time, Luke Dashjr leaving over different visions for Bitcoin mining makes the direction OCEAN takes from here especially interesting. I’m curious to see how OCEAN and CONVOY evolve from this point. More competition and different approaches in mining can only make the space more interesting to watch.

Different subject, same underlying idea: resilience grows when people are less dependent on a single distant system. With Nostr, that means local relays, local communities and infrastructure we can actually participate in. The more of those independent pieces we have, the stronger the network becomes. That is exactly why I was happy to see a Turkish relay come online. ⚡

I think local relay infrastructure can become especially valuable for regional communities. For Türkiye, it is not only about resilience. It can also help Turkish content stay easier to discover, connect local users, and give projects like #nostrorgtr a stronger foundation. We are still at the beginning, but it is good to see the pieces slowly coming together. ⚡

The more I use Nostr, the more I realize the experience depends on finding people you actually enjoy hearing from, not just following whatever is pushed in front of you. I think I am slowly finding my pack.
