It started to snow here about 8:30AM, I just went out to refill the bird feeders and we have about 9cm of very light fluffy dry snow on the ground so far. It’s got a way to go to get to the 50 cm predicted. It's -14 °C outside. It's quite pleasant to be out for a short time!

Sure. That’s a real concern in the US of 2026. But what else can we do? Building networks of concerned professionals in this space will not ever be a waste of time, regardless if this funding gets pulled. We must work together and move forward.

Incidentally, cycads are a real mystery. Very contemplative plants. This one sat there doing nothing for three years. No new leaves, not even sure it was alive. Then a cat knocked it over and dumped out half the soil, which I only partially replaced. A month later, over a week’s time, it popped out those two long leaves. That was a year ago. Then nothing. Recently visited the oldest known potted plant in the world, a cycad, from the mid 1700’s seem in photos below.

I’m forgetting the biggest “what worked”. We had friends to call on and were able to help others. Two friends offered to charge the battery, and offered coffee. I met a new student neighbor walking through our yard to avoid downed lines. Had dinner at a neighbors with power. Consulted with another neighbor w/o power. Checked on three others. Had it been longer or more widespread, mutual assistance circle would have been bigger.

Missing one solar lantern.
Should get more fuel for camp stoves

Ok- what worked- house well insulated, dropped only 8 degrees in 24 hrs from time power went out at 10 am with no heat input with -3C night temps.
Generator ran fridge for about an hour, fridge stayed below 43F, freezer at 22 F
Able to run fireplace blower from car battery on low or via generator if needed. Wood stove kept house at 63F easily with intermittent blowing.
Need to replace battery, not holding charge well.
Had adequate battery power for phones.
Solar, rechargeable lights great.

We stopped over at That House last night. Hard to explain how magnificently weird it is, and possibly uniquely American? On a rural road running beside a river, a big house on a hill, with a large yard with a pond is absolutely coated with lights. You walk up the steep drive and the man responsible greets visitors on his balcony wearing a Santa hat and grinch flannel pants. He loves this. Starts putting out lights in mid October. He’s an artist too. My spouse asked if he could work in a fossil. I had a stash of fossils, rocks, shells and semi precious stones from jewelry making days for him to choose something.
I thought he’d pick one thing, but instead he made up a design of jewel boxes using all of the good stuff (argh! My stash!) At first I was very taken aback. But honestly, am I ever going back to jewelry work? Idk. Sometimes you have to let things go to gain other things. We got a cool shower.

We moved to this house 26 yrs ago. It was a wreck and we got a good deal. Assumed we be here 2-3 years so we fixed it up as well as we could, doing a lot of the work ourselves or as cheaply as we could. We’ve upgraded as we’ve been able when it became apparent we’d be here for the long haul. The shower drain failed in the downstairs bathroom and it’s taken over 19 months to find someone to do the work at a price we could afford. Found a local tile guy, who did wonderful work.

Liberated greens still good from the abandoned nearby plots too. When I got home called the neighbor and we washed and split it up. This is a proof of concept and the spouse is building a new bigger better wooden box that will incorporate the cat limiting access hatch as a Christmas gift for me. So she’ll only be cramped for a few more days. We also feed her outside the box first then the uneaten food and pellets go in the box when she finishes to avoid scarfing by Fish. This solution arose because I cannot spend hours watching the cat food dishes. Well, I could, but I’m not wiling to.

Mouse is not that fussed about food and prefers to graze when hungry. To solve the obvious problems with this, we made a Feeding Arena that has a hole sized to fit her and exclude him. She grew, as kittens do, and it became more and more difficult for her to access her food. So the Arena got an upgrade. It has been found acceptable.

I have a student with a service dog. Yesterday our class was small, only 3, and she asked if she could take the dog’s vest off because he had been on task all day. We were all OK with that and as soon as she did, Milo, the dog came up to all of us for scratches and pats, a silly goofball with a full body wag. I had not appreciated how well trained and obedient he is, how much control it takes to be working. Really grateful he’s there for my student, and impressed how much they do together.

When asked in anonymous surveys in past years, students have said they didn’t go to class because:

My best friend’s dad died yesterday. Not a surprise, a release from pain. Spent a few hours with her today and brought her movie candy (snocaps and thin mints) because it’s the best comfort food I know. Plus some grown up fancy chocolate too, because we are, after all, adults. Grief is a known country to her and she has maps and stars to guide. Funny,though, how other’s grief brings our own to mind. Thinking of my mom who I still miss with a bone deep ache, and my dad whose skills I still teach.

Thinking about cast iron cookware and how people get about it. My best friend took her Dutch oven camping, it was heavy and when she brought it home it got left outside. For a week. With food in it. Didn’t know how to clean it so put a cup of gasoline in it and set it on fire. Left it outside for about half a year. After a good sanding and scrubbing to get the rust off, and re-seasoning, it’s fine.

Suggested she store it inside though.
