Imagine both men had a time machine, travelling 20 years in the future. Imagine my father putting the 100 USD in his time machine and it arriving today.<br/><br/>I pick up the 100 USD.<br/><br/>How much value did I get? Is this the same 100 USD? Yes.<br/><br/>But can I BUY the same amount if stuff with it?<br/><br/>No!<br/><br/>Why not?<br/><br/>Because they printed Trillions more of it. That’s why it’s purchasing power decreased.<br/><br/>The purchasing “power” or energy leaked. <br/><br/>My father worked 8 hours to get that 100 USD but his time didn’t make it.<br/><br/>With the rule of 72 you can calculate that if they created 7% more dollars every year, that in 72/7% = 10 years, half of the purchasing power leaked.<br/><br/>The US dollar leaked purchasing power.<br/><br/>It leaked half of my father’s 8 hours.<br/><br/>So after 10 years in the time machine only 50 dollars of purchasing power arrived or 4 hours of my father.<br/><br/>After another 10 years again half of my father’s time leaked. Or 25 dollars our of the 100 dollars of my father.<br/><br/>After 20 years I his son opened the Time machine of my father and picked up the 100 USD .<br/><br/>I only got 25 USD in purchasing power or 2 hours of my father’s work.<br/><br/>You see: by printing fiat currency at the rate of 7% per year… they stole 6 hours of my father or 75 USD.<br/><br/>Now imagine the friend of my father who converted his 8 hours of work into a golden coin and gave it to his daughter.<br/><br/>During 20 years the amount if gold has only increased with 1.5% per year.<br/><br/>72/1,5 = 48.<br/><br/>It will take 48 years until the golden coin’s purchasing power decreases by half.<br/><br/>So after 20 years there is still some time in that time machine for that daughter.<br/><br/>The daughter can pick up the golden coin and spend maybe 7 hours of her father.<br/><br/>Gold doesn’t leak time. Or energy.<br/><br/>Why?<br/><br/>Because they cannot print it like they want.<br/><br/>It costs energy to “print gold”. It costs energy to produce gold. And they cannot produce it at a rate of say 7% per year like they have been doing with US dollars (= fiat currency).<br/><br/>Now I give that 100 dollar of my father, worth 25 dollars to YOU.<br/><br/>You give it to your son or daughter in 20 years. You also have a time machine. You also can travel to the time machine. That traveling is called “Saving”.<br/><br/>Yes, when you save that is exactly what you are doing. Saving is using a time machine.<br/><br/>How much of that 25 USD ( remember the bill still says 100 USD, but we know that it’s purchasing power is really 25 USD and it’s decrease of value is USD 75), how much will your sun reveive in 20 years? How much of the 2 hours of my father’s time?<br/><br/>6.25 dollars or 50 cents!!! Remember every 10 years the value is cut by half.<br/><br/>25&gt; 12.5 in 10 years (or 2 hours &gt; 1 hour in 10 years)<br/><br/>And 12.5 &gt; 6.25 in another 20 years (or 1 hour &gt;0.5 dollar in 10 years)<br/><br/>Enter Bitcoin<br/><br/>If in 2014 I had jumped in that time machine and picked up that 100 USD, which was maybe 50 usd in purchasing power amd bought Bitcoins with it.<br/><br/>How much purchasing power would I have had now? Every time he talks about an asset like a bond, you can look in the text and see what he says about it.<br/><br/>**Scaling this up**<br/>Imagine you have a list of youtube videos of Michael, of other bitcoiners and they are talking. I live in a Caribbean island where the fiat currency is pegged to the dollar!<br/><br/>This post will help you wherever you live. In Europe, Portugal, Argentina.<br/><br/>Our inflation numbers were 7% in may!! 7% compared to one year earlier.<br/><br/>Say Cheese<br/>What does this mean?<br/><br/>It means that we are living in a world of stinky dirty inflation mice and rats. And they love cheese. And the cheese is your purchasing power. Inflation is just some dirty fiat rats who love to eat away your purchasing power cheese.<br/><br/>And that number of 7% is just telling you how big their teeth are. And at what rate they are eating.<br/><br/>Rule of 72<br/>There is a rule of 72 that experienced investors know. It basically says that if you hold an asset and inflation is say 7% you divide the 72 by the inflation number and you get the number of years that the purchasing power of your asset gets cut in half.<br/><br/>In our case if I had 10.000 of my currency and I turn it into dollars and I get say 5000 dollars it means that in 10.2 years the stinky inflation rats would have eaten my purchasing power of my cheese into half. I now only got 2500 dollars of purchasing power or 5000 of my currency.<br/><br/>So I quickly calculated the number of sats and about 19 million sats is another way to storing my purchasing power.<br/><br/>Sat is like digital steel. Stinky fiat rats bite their teeth in steel and the can’t eat away my purchasing power cheese.<br/><br/>Where do you store your purchasing power?<br/>Ask the people of Argentina or Venezuela or Zimbabwe. In Argentina they got some really aggressive stinky fiat rats eating away your purchasing power agressively at a rate of 90% per year!!!<br/><br/>Yeah you read it right 90%. Here the rule of 72 is turned on its head. Because if you divide 72 by 90 you got 0.8 year. If you mutiply that by 12 you got 9.6 months.<br/><br/>So imagine this: your Argentinian wife is pregnant. You are happy!! Your first child. You saved 5000 dollars of your blood and sweat in the fiat thing called Argentinian pesos. Just to save for the house or buying baby stuff and redecorate the pink room. Congrats your wife is expecting a baby girl.<br/><br/>Just after your Argentinian girl Barbara is born, the dirty argentinian fiat rats would have eaten half of the purchasing power of her money. Barbara has to now live with 2500 dollars worth of fist argentinian pesos!!<br/><br/>I guess Barbara won’t love that. The mice and rats ate her baby lunch. Her college grant.<br/><br/>Argentina is just an example. There are many countries where this is happening. This is also happening in the USA. They buy everything double. Two bags of rice instead of one. Two cans of paint instead of one. Two toilet papers instead of one. Because they know that fiat money is actually the same as toilet paper.<br/><br/>The only difference between toilet paper and fiat money is the trust in the central bank and the government of that nation.<br/><br/>And when that trust disappears because the central bank turns on the printer like bbrrrr the trust disappears and fiat money’s value goes to 0. Like toilet paper.<br/><br/>Toilet paper and stinky dirty hungry rats. Remember that combination!!<br/><br/>So what now?<br/><br/>I guess watch your Central Bureau of Statistics. Subscribe to their newsletter about inflation. So you get the news as first about at wat rate the stinky fiat rats are eaten away this month. And at what rate compared to last year.<br/>If you see numbers like 7% as I saw today you now know how to use rule of 72 to know the number of years.
