Greetings Bitcoiners!

Back to the West Shore this month for our coffee meetup! Join us at 9am on this Saturday, Oct 24th, at Denim Coffee in Mechanicsburg. Hope to see you there!

Continuing with the Bitcoin Ten Commandments series, next on the list is "you shall not have single points of failure." This is another timely topic, as 2026 has seen a few big security blow-ups that affected people who had single points of failure.

When you're setting up your bitcoin self custody, two things are really important: security and redundancy. You want yourself, or the people you delegate, to be the only person who can spend your bitcoin (security), and you also want to be sure you're not going to lose the keys (redundancy). Guarding against single points of failure can help both of these.

The two self custody bombshells that dropped this year were the Coldcard vulnerability and the Ledger reseller tampering episode. Although both had different sources of security breach, both resulted in people having funds stolen because the device they were entrusting with their private keys turned out to be untrustworthy. Many learned too late that they were exposed to single point of failure risk. Of course, there's a bit of "Captain Hindsight" coming to the rescue here. In late 2026, it's easy to look back and say people who lost money shouldn't have trusted a single HW device to generate and protect their keys. This was standard practice for years though, and now everyone's adjusting to a post Coldcard world.

What are some practical and actionable steps for a bitcoiner to reduce their single point of failure risk? Here are three:

If using a single sig wallet, have seed words written down in more than one secure place, and not have the only copy stored together with HW device
Become comfortable with more than one type of wallet software
Learn about multisig wallets, which require multiple keys to spend

Multisig can be a game-changer to meet both the security and redundancy goals of one's bitcoin setup. It takes time to become comfortable with, and if you haven't messed around with it before, now is a great time! Transactions fees are at very low levels currently, and the cost of one cup of coffee can probably pay the fare of more than 20 test transactions. Blue wallet on Android and iOS and Sparrow on desktop/laptop are both very capable and feature-rich tools for building and using multisig wallets. One's hodl setup takes time to become comfortable with, and changes can be warranted due to life circumstances, as well as learning about vulnerabilities in devices (re: 2026!).

Cheers friends! Next topic is "you shall keep bitcoin private keys air gapped." Hope to see you on Saturday! Keep stacking sats, keep stacking skills.

Lonelypumpkins (nprofile…g2xp)

Bitcoin in the Burg

Provide value to others
Spend less than you earn
Save in a money that can't be printed by someone else for free
