At no point can something "will" a chemical reaction to occur or not occur.

To move your #Matrix account from one instance to another without losing your current chat history do as follows:

0.5) Create a backup phrase
1) Use the Element desktop client with your existing account to in Settings - Encryption - Export your keys.
2) Create your new user account and use the Element desktop app to import the keys you just exported.
3) With your old account, invite the new account to all rooms you're in (including 1on1 chats). Make sure the room setting is correct for "Newly joined users can see history".
4) With your new account, accept all invites.
5) With your old account, leave all rooms.

Swedish libraries were connected to a system where they ordered in which books each library should have*. They made some decisions themselves of course, but otherwise you could just ask them for a specific book and they would then order it so that you could lend it a few weeks later.

Me being a computer geek with a modem, I immediately recognized the dialup tones when they ordered one for me one time, and I chatted with the somewhat tech-illiterate librarian who was pleasantly surprised by my interest in their system and gladly showed it to me.

I also saw the dialup number and the passcode for my local library.

From then on all books I wanted to read just magically appeared in the library just in time for when I came in to lend them.

Exactly. Default settings will turn Grass blocks into Dry Grass after having been walked on 10 times, and into Soil Path after 100. It also lowers the height of any grass you walk through until it disappears completely.

Of course, it's fully configurable with any block types so on my own server it additionally removes small bushes if walked through enough times but I didn't put that into the default config.

Today I made a #Hytale mod. See, back then I had an idea that it would be quite RPG if the world actually changed from just the way players traversed it, like, creating paths by changing the blocks where players often walked.

I was there. I was burnt by having to support family members with encryption key issues. I had to abandon Dendrite as server software.

Volkswagens's cloud service VW Connect has interesting properties. It's used for the communication between the mobile app and the car, and thanks to reverse engineering also by other integrations like Home-Assistant.

A week ago ours stopped working, both for those third party integrations as well as VW's own app. After having researched whether the problem was on my side or not I decided to wait out this temporary outage.

After two days I wondered why nothing happened. After all, this should be a somewhat big deal, since it meant you couldn't start window defrosting remotely and other obvious winter needs. I looked around on the web and found that this ... just happens, sometimes, and it's "per car" - not the whole service in itself. And it's been doing this for years.

recap: VW's cloud service suddenly stops working randomly for individual cars every now and then - for multiple days - and then starts working again.

Because yes, last evening my integrations started showing updated information, and we've done absolutely nothing different from any other day.

I wonder if the VW developers even know about this. I'd love to hear the technical details behind it!

Someone would have needed to clone the repo and go out of their way to also compile untgz and include somewhere. Still something that needs checking I guess, but it's not likely to exist in _many_ places.

Installed Leap 16 and figured out how to turn off PasswordbasedAuthentication for SSH logins, since the keyboard-thing option was unexpectedly also needed. Did it properly with a separate .conf in .d/ for just those settings. Logged in and out several times using ed25519 pki afterwards, including through a few reboots.

Ran zypper update; reboot. Now my key is no longer accepted and I cannot log back in.

It's the being able to be cheaper than anyone else that's suspect I think - paired with "interesting" security practices.

They use an old fork of OpenWRT on really old kernels, at least on the Deco M9+ APs I've looked into getting current OpenWRT running on. The entry point was an exploit found by someone else, and it was a strcpy added by TP-link to the local fw upload code.

At some point a vendor adding code containing trivial exploits is suspect in itself.

Day two of relearning how to use a keyboard (a.k.a moving to a split keyboard).

After lots of configuration I'm reasonably happy with the setup and I'm beginning to mostly, slowly, hit the intended keys on the first try.

I've been touch typing for easily 35 years, with the wrong hand position and no clear separation of hand duty so this is one of the more difficult things I've ever done.

TIL that the president of Signal believes that people who run Mastodon and/or Matrix servers do so "in most cases" on hyperscaler* infrastructure.

This is my Mastodon server. And its UPS. And its networked KVM for when things get really hairy.

It's also my Matrix server. And Nextcloud. And Git. And Home-Assistant. And Jellyfin. And SearXNG. And Peertube.

When people objected to her claims, she doubled down and proclaimed condescendingly that we "don't have a clear understanding of this space".

Agree - if you want to run your service centralized. Neither my Mastodon nor my Matrix-server need anything but my own self-hosting. Of course they won't handle billions of concurrent customers - but a few tens of thousands similar to mine will. Together.

I simply don't think Signal being centralized is a good thing. It's your choice, but alternatives do exist and those do not need hyperscalers.

See, a lawyer will never ever give you a straight yes/no answer, while that is what you actually want to hear. In the legal profession there's nothing gained from being bold - which coincidentally is also the reason it took so long for large companies to embrace open source.

Here's why you don't need to:

1) You're likely not running "uksportsbetting.com" - that is, a site actively targeting the UK either explicitly or implicitly.

2) You're likely not under UK jurisdiction. Sure, if you're going full Kim Dotcom or Julian Assange actively flaunting that you're being law-avoiding that'll be a different thing, but otherwise there are no legal recourses the UK can use just because you run the forum cutekittensinhats.com from another country.

3) If you for some reason end up on their radar, unless you're a large commercial venture, the likely action will be a notification and then you can re-visit all this again. Even IF you decide to go The-Pirate-Bay-reply back to them, that'll only add the UK as another country you can't visit (= come under UK jurisdiction) just like that other big country no one who has ever posted anything on the Internet can visit atm.

I can't verify that Signal's server is running the source they claim. Thus I need to trust them and their chosen hosting environment.

My point with hosting your own Matrix server is that people with accounts on it aren't leaking any metadata to other servers - and you do know what's running on your server.

From those purely technical aspects Matrix is better suited for sensitive communications than Signal.

The trick, IMHO, is that they're using LLMs as "thinking engines" instead of trying to make them knowledge databases. In effect this AI works like a human - looking up information and using tools to accomplish tasks.

We're coming up to the point where the industry realizes* that trying to make LLMs into all-knowing oracles was the wrong path to take. All an LLM needs to be trained to do is to _think_ - the rest is handled through tool usage.

Similar to humans. We never tried to remember the whole phone directory. Or all APIs for all programming libraries. Or do all kinds of advanced math without access to calculators/Mathematica.

LLMs are "brains", with all the funny hallucinations that you get if you decide to ask some bloke named "Greg" for answers to anything.

Greg can be quite the competent assistant when given access to suitable tools though.

I helped Legal at Sony come to terms with open source a huge amount of years ago. One of the things they had real troubles with was understanding that "the FSF" is not out to get you.

If you're a good open source citizen bad things won't happen.

To your actual question: The original discussion on linking to GPL-code is based on development in C. Languages that only ever do soft-linking and where libraries are never statically compiled into the program is a whole different matter.

So, IANAL (obv) but making use of external libraries that the user can either choose to use (program works) or choose to not use (program doesn't work) is perfectly fine. You're not redistributing them, you're not "tightly bound" to them in the traditional C include.h sense.
