This is something I also wrestle with although I have improved this past year. My first check is am I prioritizing things correctly? Am I spending time with the Lord either in prayer, study of scripture, spiritual reading, rosary, daily mass, etc. whatever your devotion. If yes, then what about time with my spouse/significant other. If yes, then what about my children (doesn’t apply for me yet). If yes, then what about my broader family? If yes, then what about my friends?
Note, I imagine work fits in there not so much as something that you consciously say yes to but more so something you do out of necessity and routine.

Capitalism and communism both stem from the false anthropology of liberalism. I am very much pro working and trade but we have to remember that the term and notion of “capital-ism” is a very novel concept in terms of the length of human history. The Silk Road for example existed well before capitalism. A regulating entity called “the state” is also a very modern idea. All of it is based on a misunderstanding of human nature by thinking we’re fundamentally individuals, specifically economic entities, which we’re not.

Oh I see what you’re saying. When I say beauty I meant it as the spectrum of “how beautiful”. So for example an ugly apple would have very very little beauty because it is created and creation is good. Just like how an evil human being is still a human being that deserves dignity by the very nature of being a human despite being evil.

For example we can think of a “good” apple (goodness being convertible with beauty) that is round, symmetrical, and seems ready for consumption. Whereas a “bad” (ugly) apple would be one that is deformed, rotting, pestilent, etc.

Beauty is inherent to a subject or object. There cannot be a disassociation between the material and its beauty just as color is an accident of a substance. Just because people may have different tastes regarding beauty, doesn’t mean there isn’t beauty or that there’s no space for reason in discerning beauty. Quite the contrary. We can know what is ugly, through our functioning faculties of reason, and correct someone that thinks it’s beautiful by concluding that their faculties of reason (I’m including intellect here) are impaired, sense perception is impaired, and/or they have a disordered will.

A lot to chew on here but it seems like the essence is that power is not an imposition of the will but rather a calling of voluntary self giving, to the point of death as of course Christ does. The Man with no “political” (in the secular definition) is the one that has kings and emperors kneel before across all time and space to the point that even our reference of time is predicated on His life. Reminds me of Braveheart where Robert the Bruce tells his father he wants what William Wallace has, true power. Power to the point that people willing give their lives for him, fight for him, die for him.
Circling back then, if I understand correctly it seems like any engagement with community, anything that lessens dependence on the impersonal (Amazon delivery, federal welfare, big grocery store chains, etc.) will shift power down (subsidiarity) and that this will gain momentum not through imposition or force (which is a sign weakness not power) but through a sense of awareness that this is actually the natural order of things (like a farmers market).

They separate the intentionality that love requires and imply it’s something that happens to us instead of something we strive for. Love is not an extreme form of like. You can love and not like. When one gives themself completely to someone in marriage and says “actually, never-mind, I want a divorce” then what they implicitly say is they never actually fully gave themselves over or are trying to take back something that is no longer theirs.

Good point, it all depends on how it’s used. What I intended to convey was the notion you expressed of eschewing monetary gain for the promotion of a more just society. I think bitcoin is more conducive to that precisely because its monetary power cannot be siphoned away by the State which I think it’s fair to say is inherently unjust. But of course, there can and will be people who seek solely to profit off of the volatility by accumulating from weak hands and selling to greedy hands.

Totally agree with that last sentence in your first paragraph. The end should be the pushing out of all weaker currencies (USD as the last bastion) from the quotidian transactional economy. If the intent is instead to acquire bitcoin for the end of a larger amount of USD (or other currency), then that’s speculative and should be avoided given its inherent uncharitableness (wasn’t sure if that was a word lol).
Yes hopefully! And there needs to be a culture that promotes broader distribution of bitcoin, not to just drive up buyers for the sake of “number go up”, but for the good of our neighbor that they may benefit from sound money that can’t be debased.
I wonder if an argument can be made that Bitcoin is in line with the virtue of poverty. Poverty, not in the mistaken sense of being in a state of miserable want, but in not desiring the superfluous and in cheerfully accepting shortage or discomfort, as St. Josemaría Escrivá puts it. With bitcoin’s USD price fluctuation, it can certainly be a bit nerve wracking to depend on that for long term savings but that is the short term cost of relying on a money that can’t be weaponized for certain political agendas (especially those that are anti-Catholic) all while throwing you a bone of x% return on investment.

That seems to suggest that God is the author of evil, of sin, which He’s not. A sort of Manichaeism it seems. Just as cold is the absence of heat, evil is the absence of good which we are the authors of due to our misuse of our free will as a result of the fall. God came to save us so that we may be made perfect in Him and as such death has been defeated, we just need to cooperate with His grace to eventually be raised again for eternal life.

Agreed, the only infallible human is the God Man, Jesus Christ. What I said though was that people, through the working of the Holy Spirit, can have infallible teachings. For example, we have to believe as a matter of faith that the writers of the Bible were infallible in their writings (inerrant) for it to be considered the word of God. It’s important to distinguish that of course the Pope is not impeccable (meaning sinless) and that he’s not infallible about everything all the time (such as having a favorite color). What we do take as a matter of faith however is that when the Pope speaks from the Holy See as it relates to faith and morals then he is infallible (ex cathedra). He will never and can never do or say anything ex cathedra that contradicts the deposit of faith our Lord left us with. One of those teachings being the Bible for example. It was compiled in the 4th century. The Church precedes the Bible and demonstrates that one can be Christian without the Bible. The Bible itself even says so.

Understandable, I struggled greatly with it as well. I actually wanted to be anything but Catholic when I reverted last year but I refused to let my pride be what got in the way of as deep of a relationship with God as possible. It was because of Pope Damascus that we even have the Bible so having a problem with the papacy implies a problem with the inerrancy of Scripture. I think you’d also agree Popes can be infallible given that the first Pope has 2 letters in the Bible, 1 Peter and 2 Peter.

If religion is to follow a systemized collection of ritual and dogma, it seems you would classify as someone who follows a religion. The ritual being reading the Bible and the dogma being that the Bible is authoritative. And I think it’s safe to assume when you say “Bible” you mean “Protestant Bible” as in the 73 books minus the 7 books the printing press axed for cost savings after Luther moved them to the appendix. I totally agree that the Bible is the word of God but it’s important to remember that the Catholic Church (guided by the Holy Spirit as our Lord tells us in Matthew 16:18) is the one that compiled it and for that reason I don’t think anyone can just go around messing with the canon like Luther and the publishing houses did. What I imagine you would consider all the “extra stuff” like the Eucharist, the Papacy, etc. is actually just an extension from the authority our Lord gave to Peter and the apostles to safeguard the deposit of faith and preach the Gospel. Instead of viewing the dogmas as constraining, may I suggest viewing them as liberating and a deepening of relationship with God, just as the Commandments do. Just as the Bible brings us closer to God, so too does the sacrifice of the mass, receiving the Eucharist, praying the rosary, etc.
A proper relationship with God requires more than just a mental assent to His truth. Relationship is incarnate. It takes a material form. Just as our Lord did when he took on human flesh and died for our sins. How we comport body and soul matters which is why religion is the expression of our faith.

I’m not sure you quite answered my questions. I’m still trying to understand how what you define as “religion” is separate from “relationship with God”. I ask with genuine concern because I care very deeply, the most deeply, about my relationship with God and view my religion as that expression.
To demonstrate my confusion, is any relationship with any God what matters? If my relationship is with a God I believe to be Unitarian (like the Jewish or Islamic faith) vs a Trinitarian God (Christian faith), does that matter? What if I portray God to be unknowable like Sikhism or coming in various forms like Hinduism or deny Christ’s divinity as true God as Arians do? Don’t we need to know who and what we mean to form a relationship?

I’ll throw “Essays on Catholicism, Liberalism, and Socialism, Considered in their Fundamental Principles” by Juan Donoso Cortes and “Revolution and Counter-Revolution” by Plinio Corrêa Oliveira into the ring, as well. Those two books opened my eyes to the glaring issues and terrible consequences of liberalism, especially as it reaches its logical conclusion.

It’s not possible to be totally independent because man, by nature, depends on others. We know this innately when we’re around newborn babies. The most important aspects of our lives are relations to others (spouse, friends, etc.) There’s also the problem that “being left alone” doesn’t stop others from getting together and doing evil not just amongst themselves but eventually to others. Libertarianism doesn’t work.
We have a responsibility to ourselves, each other, and God to strive towards the common good as a society.

Nice! From what I hear, properties get snatched up quick because there’s so many people “passively” in the market with apps like Zillow, Redfin, etc. now. Previously, people would formally enter the housing market and the pipeline was ~30 days with a possible bidding war. Nowadays because of the number of people on the sideline at all times, it can take even up to a year to find a home from when one first starts. Crazy.
