Rose season is two weeks early this year.

I must endure this gauntlet of the roses whenever I approach the kitchen door. During the pandemic when I became too crippled to get into the rose garden, my loving husband, Paul, created an accessible garden that I could enjoy.

This represents fifty varieties of mostly miniature roses, some bred by Paul, others by the famous miniature rose breeder, Ralph Moore.

45 years ago, I worked for the power company in my home town. All the line crews and the engineering staff were local to the community. They all cared and were proud of their service to the town. The power company was a life long career.

Now it's all contract workers. The power company doesn't keep local employees at all. The lowest bid wins. They have no stake in the community, no stake in the outcome.

Giant corporations putting data centers in rural areas can negotiate tax breaks from towns, counties and/or the state. However, those negotiated tax breaks must apply not only to the corporation, but to every tax payer in that taxation district.

Google gets a 92% property tax break in The Dalles, OR? Everyone in the county should get the same deal.

Government should never be able to grant special deals to anyone that does not apply to everyone. Laws and taxation should apply uniformly.

Government should work for all of us, not just the richest.

Today makes ten years married. Been together twenty-eight. Never figured marriage would ever be on the table for folks like us.

We fought for it. Finally got it.

Sad times.

We're downsizing, eliminating the accumulations of our lifetimes.

My husband, an old school analog photographer, has pitched out hundreds of handmade prints. Yeah, some of these were proofs, but many were completed works.

One of these days, I expect to see his glass negatives in the bin, too. He's working hard to ensure that after he's gone, he doesn't become another postmortem artist like Vivian Maier.

Art doesn't pay. We're in an era where we can ill afford keeping what doesn't financially support us.

I got attacked by an unleashed dog in the leash only park on my walk this morning. My driveway bisects the park. The owners were a 100 yards away. It ran full tilt at me snarling with teeth bared. It jumped at me snapping, and then went for my ankles.

No injury, only mud on my pants.

I called my husband Paul and he came out the driveway with the car and picked me up as the people were loading their dogs back into their two cars.

As he does so well, Paul chewed them out for their disregard to the safety of others. They seemed unswayed by his shouting and never once apologized.

Two decades ago, I rode with a group of straight bikers. I was the first openly gay man most of these guys had knowingly met.

I remember siting in some roadside side bar in the middle of the day’s ride. I laughed at them for their leering at the buxom waitress.

I told them that beards are for me what big tits are to them. It took them a moment to digest that, but then, suddenly, as if choreographed, a half dozen bearded bikers raised their hands to shield their beards.

The leerers became the leered.

Many seemed uncomfortable with me for the next couple rides. Eventually, they started to lean into it and they would tease and flirt with me with their beards.

It was wonderful.

This was the paragon print in my eleven years with the now defunct Lulzbot TAZ 4 3D printer. The costume antlers that I made in 2019 look about as real as I could make them. There was a lot of post processing. Each PLA antler was wrapped in thin layer kaolin clay and then painted. They mounted using magnets that mated with a circlet worn under my bandana.

Amazingly they weigh only 35g. So they're very easy to wear. Sadly, by the time I finished them, the pandemic started. I have never worn this pair in public.

I did wear earlier iterations of the project in the preceding years, but none of those were as fine as these.

We had our first hard autumn rain yesterday. All the fruit trees are bowing low with the extra weight of the water. This is the view of eye level apples immediately outside the big yurt's back door. It's hard to exit this way without getting hit on the head.

This is a very old Red Delicious tree. While prolific, these apples are usually almost flavorless and uninteresting compared with the newer varieties planted in the orchard.

Over the last 30 years, we've had generations of cats. We have three now, but at one point, we were caring for seven. All our cats came to us unbidden. Our home is at the end of a long dead end road. People abandon cats here. We take them in and give them their best life.

This is Isabel. The left photo is when we first found her living off grasshoppers in the big empty field bisected by our driveway. She was clearly socialized, but very wary. It took us two months to capture her and bring her home.

She immediately took over, becoming the dominate cat of our colony. In her youth, she was a wild thing. Now she is sixteen, a crippled and sedate old lady. We keep her arthritis under control after acquiring a cat sized prescription for the same medication that I take for arthritis. She has outlived everyone in the colony to the point where she the last cat standing.

In 2024, she has two newer colony mates, but she dislikes them both. More on them in the next couple days.

New instance, new introduction.

I am K Lars Lohn, a misfit old biker that values independence, diversity, and creativity.

I'm done defining myself by the career that dominated my days. With my health in shreds and my life's horizon clearly ahead, I'm defining myself by what makes me happy:

Seeing my husband by my side makes me happy: programming, wilderness, mountains, plants, greenhouses, irrigation systems, motorcycles, twisty highways, maps, my maze artwork, telling stories, music, ...

I've led a rich and unconventional life. For thirty years, I've lived on an organic farm in a tent by a river. I hope to continue doing so until my final breath.

I came out as a gay man in 1980 in rural Montana, a hostile era in a paradise. I had no support. I perceived no future. It nearly ended my life. I certainly never expected to live to this age.
