My 12-year-old dachshund had her first severe syncope episode. Her heart rate went over 200, and several times she completely lost her pulse. <br/><br/>I spent that entire weekend doing CPR on her, genuinely believing she wouldn&#39;t survive until Monday.<br/><br/>She&#39;s been living with dilated cardiomyopathy for seven years. On Monday the vet was honest with me - either euthanize her at the clinic or take her home and let her pass surrounded by her family. <br/><br/>I chose the second option. I wanted her last moments to be in a place she knew and loved.<br/><br/>I monitored her breathing and heart rate every 30 minutes, kept a diary, gave her all the medication, and even syringe-fed her water. <br/>A few more times I thought I had lost her. <br/><br/>But slowly, stubbornly, she started coming back. She began to stand, then walk, then eat again.
