Good Sunday morning! I have the day off today. Plus the next two!

I took this picture of milkweed at work. It's next to the loading ramp against the brick wall. Along with others it grew up through cracks in concrete and rock.

It's been doing that since they smothered that particular piece of earth with decorative rock and landscaping fabric 5 or so years ago.

I remember when they did it. I fantasized about filling it with natives. Helping tend it. And making it one of the most pollinator friendly post offices in the United States. I was thinking Big.

Anyway, without any attention to it the milkweeds came back immediately. They're some of the best looking milkweeds I have ever seen. I wish I could get them to grow in our front meadow that well!

Yesterday, though, I happened to notice the milkweed in the picture. It doesn't look like that anymore. A lot of the leaves have been chewed off and the flowers are gone.

At first I thought somebody sprayed it with poison. Then it occurred to me we just had a bunch of caterpillars hatch at the nursery. And they went to work chewing on the milkweed we have for sale on the table. Guessing they did the same to the milkweed in the picture.

Annie and Sophia (13 yrs. old) showed me the little caterpillars on the plant tables after work a few days back. They were so happy for them. A happiness on par with if our cat had a litter of kittens.

Then last evening the wasps ate a few caterpillars The two of them went to work immediately hiding plants that still had live caterpillars left on them. We'll see how they did today.

There's more to this nursery than just selling plants. We've got a world to save! :-)

Well, I should go now. I have pots to scrub and sterilize later this morning. Supposed to be smoky again today.

Good morning. That's an old steel clothes line pole. It was here when we bought the place back in '03. I moved it from its original spot and use it as a pullup bar now.

I took this picture at dusk last night. It was darker than the picture shows.

Before I started my pullups Sophia (13 yrs. old) said to me, "Hey Dad, do you want to see a hummingbird nest."

"Sure," I said.

She and Hayden (16 yrs. old) were doing something in the shed a few feet away.

She said it's hard to see. You can mistake it for a pine cone which are currently maturing on the branches of the red pine tree directly above the bar.

She took a few different angles and said, "There it is. If you step over here you can see it."

As we got positioned we heard the vibration of hummingbird wings. A few seconds later there she was. She floated into her nest that was barely as big as a pine cone.

I couldn't believe it. There, maybe 8 feet above me, invisible until now, was the hummingbird that has been sitting in her nest watching me do pullups and hangs since she built it. An egg of hers can't be bigger than a marble. I don't know how she'd fit in there otherwise.

That made my evening. I had just returned from planting lance leafed coreopsis along the ditch of County E and watering plugs to help them through the extreme heat we're in.

Having my daughter make visible the invisible, in this case the hummingbird, was just what I need after 6 days of driveness delivering mail and packages in the July heat.

Good morning. It's 6:20. I have signs to put out yet. They tell people we're having a native plant sale. I'll put some out on the way to work.

It cooled down a bit last night. It made sleeping tolerable.

That's one of my favorite pictures from the front meadow. It's harebell. It's still blooming. I saw it mixed in with yellow flowers last evening. I had to stop and do a double take.

Each year the meadow becomes fuller. We've plugged a lot of plants in there over the years.

That's it for now. I'm off to the mail trail. I feel like there's something I need to say. And that usually hits me going down the interstate at 70 miles an hour. Then it's gone. Most of the time never to be seen again.

Good morning. I took this photo years ago. When I started to become drawn to natives. Or maybe when they started calling me. One never knows.

It's butterfly weed on the roadside of a mail route I subbed on. That was the nice part about being a sub. I got to see a lot of country and get to know a lot of people. I did it for over 15 years. I can open the local paper most weeks and recognize a name and face in the obituary section.

It's hot in this house. 80 degrees. Floors are sticky. Humid. My family is sound asleep with fans running. I'm glad they get to sleep and not have to run off to the rat race.

Tomorrow is our oldest son's birthday. He'll be 27. Annie I got together on his 3rd birthday, and never looked back. Eventually, with the encouragement of Annie's grandma and dad I adopted him. That meant a lot to me. They believed in me. Her grandma payed the attorney bill. Her ashes are up on our shelf. Long story.

Ok, I gotta go. That was fun to write. I hope you have a great day!

I am taking the post card below with me. Sophia (13 yrs. old) painted it. I am mailing to Arizona. It'll leave on the mail truck this morning. I still like sending postcards. I like delivering them, too. There's thought and care put into them.

Good morning. That's harebell and the old farm house we used to live in behind it. Living in the old farmhouse with no running water was a rebellion against modern life for me. I don't know what it was for my wife and son. Just home perhaps. A paid for place we lived in while we built cordwood. Cozy I used to hear a lot.

I am still uneasy with modern life. That's where the harebell comes in. It's beautiful. Older than me on an evolutionary time scale. Here long before me, and long after me.

The algorithms of the Digital Age will spin me and everyone else every which way, but not the harebell. That constant is one thing that keeps me coming back to it and its relatives. Grounding and connection.

One tight in Earl; the other by the junkyard. Thankfiul to both landowners for allowing us to stick them in the ground on their property.

Harebell blooming in the front meadow and beyond. Annie found a wild patch of it along the trail her and Sophia ride horses on.

Good morning. 5 minutes until I move in the direction of the mail trail.

Cloudy and humid out there. It rained yesterday. Some say we got an inch. It would help if we would empty our rain gauge from previous rains. Get a more accurate measurement that way. :-)

I listen to a lot of content while delivering mail. I have noticed the most calming is always anything concerning biological life. Unfortunately it's the thing that's talked about the least. We forget we're biological beings. Or, as Carl Jung once said, we've repressed our animal.

Good morning. Barely. It'll be noon soon. It's warm here. 83 degrees on our thermometer.

We've had one customer at the nursery so far. She bought a few plants and a ring.

We sell more than native plants. Annie, and Sophia (13) sell the crafts they work on while home during the winter. And we also sell Bean Brook Nursery T-shirts, bags, and such. There's other stuff, too. You'll have to check it out when you visit. I was trying to talk Hayden (16) into putting his hand forged bottle openers in there. They're 25 bucks a piece. He's hesitant. I don't know why. It can't hurt to put them out.

We had another good weekend at the nursery. We've been open a month and just the right amount of people have showed up. It's pretty much Annie running it. The kids and I help out when we can. I don't think she's compensated nearly enough for what she does. But we knew that going into this. There's not a lot of money to be made in horticulture. Yet there's so much to native plants, and plants in general that is fascinating.

I started listening to "Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't" videos on the mail route. They're two heavily tattooed guys with Chicago accents that know a lot about native plants and the effects our modern life has on the land and our souls. I like their style. It might not be for everyone though. They use a lot of colorful language.

I'm back to work tomorrow. Should be my day off, but we're short on carriers. The extra money helps. I'm not going to complain.

That's it for now. It's Sunday. A break from the get-up-and-go-gotta-get-it-done mode.

Feeling appreciative to all of you who support our business online and off. Sometimes we wonder if we're going to make it. Anyone who has owned their own business understands the commitment it takes, especially when you first start out. And just how much you depend on customers to help stay afloat.

Good morning. It's 6:22. I have to be up and moving from this kitchen table in 8; minutes. What's on my mind?

It's dry here. Out earth roof I'd dry and dying. The yard grasses that don't belong here are browning. The ground I run barefoot on hurts my feet and hips. Nothing major, enough to notice though.

Yet I noticed the prairie dropseeds we've planted in the front meadow are lush and green. So are the sedges I notice in and out of the meadow.

They're built for this. They've been through this before. Guessing it's effortless for them. It's evolution at work. At least I think so. I am still learning.

6:25 AM. Off to the mail. Taking Bean Brook Nursery signs with me. I put the ones up I think the Highway Department will take more toward the weekend when they're not working. Then I get them picked up before Monday morning. Otherwise it's a process to get them back. Gotta drive in to town and ask for them and all that. Time is scarce these days.

I noticed the lupines are starting to form seeds. The pollinators did their thing already. It goes too fast after a long winter.

I'm out of time! I wanted to write about our long term vision with the cordwood house, homeschooling, plants, etc.

Good morning. It's the middle of it. Quiet here. I hear a robin occasionally call and a cricket continuously. I am at the kitchen table. One of my favorite places.

Outside it's 70, sunny, and pregnant with spring. I was out there earlier with Annie while she was watering plants.

I asked her if she plans on dividing up a large pot of sweetgrass into smaller ones to sell. She walked over and grabbed a gallon pot of it. She said, "this one isn't selling." So that looks like something we'll be doing together today.

I enjoy potting up plants with her. Good conversation and a brighter future on the horizon. And more native plants to going home in more hands.

I planted another wild lupine along the ditch on County E last evening. That makes 3 total. I didn't see my neighbor or his dog. A few cars and pickups went by.

One pickup has to be going 80. E is a straight shot east and west for miles. They just sealed the cracks in it the other day. To cover the sealant they use toilet paper. Guessing it prevents tire stickage.

Toilet paper looks like confetti behind pickup trucks at eighty miles an hour in case you were wondering.

I look forward to watching those tiny lupine grow in adversity. The soil is always hotter and drier down by E. Guessing it's the heat coming off the blacktop that does it.

I planted that lupine barefooted with a soil knife. The ground dry and poky under my feet. I packed the fine, dry, sandy soul around the roots and watered it. I look forward to tomorrow's visit and years of blooms to come.

There's a peace in planting plants. I felt it walking back to the house along the ditch facing the settings sun. I wasn't in the mail jeep on the blacktop like I was earlier. The skin on the bottom of my feet touching the earth. Like they did when I was a kid. Barefeet on earth is a simple pleasure I partake in every day.

I remember my Dad push mowing our lawn in his barefeet. It was when we lived in the trailer park. He was young. He stood on factory floors all day wearing steel towed boots. Guessing once he got them off he wanted to keep them off despite the green feet he got out of it.

That's it for now. This was another one that I let go wherever it wanted to go. It feels like okay writing. It usually does after working with plants. If you made it this far I hope you got something out of it. I know I did.

Hopefully my day starts off better than yesterday. My white mail jeep started on fire. Some wires, that previous owners added, shorted out underneath the hood. Thankfully it didn't catch. It would've been quite a bon fire. My jeep was completely full of mail, newspapers, and Amazon packages. I started it up in the Post Office parking lot to leave for the route and smoke immediately poured out around the hood. Plastic and copper on fire.

A writer friend posted how it's better for your brain to write by hand. That's according to a neuroscientist. I long to someday write pages and pages full of words, edit it, and publish it. The point would be to become more clear in my thinking and surprise myself with what comes out of me.

GM🔥 It's 9 AM. Just closed the fire down. Probably didn't need one today. But I like sitting in front of my fires. I have sat in front of 218 of them this burning season. Burning season is coming to an end soon for us.

It's late. Usually I am writing on this thing around six. Morning is half over from this vantage point.

There was a message from my neighbor when I turned my phone on. He's working on my mail jeep. Before he started buying parts and putting money into it he wanted to make sure it was okay.

A half hour later we hung up.

I'm blessed with good neighbors. My neighbor, the mechanic, helps us keep our old vehicles running. Just down the road is the neighbor I pay a monthly payment for the jeep currently being worked on. She didn't have to finance it. And in between them is a neighbor who recently gifted us a bunch of homemade Italian sausage and plants native plants from our nursery.

Like my mechanic neighbor said to me this morning, "We gotta get through this thing together."

That was a good reminder. I needed to hear that.

I'm off to make the most of my Monday off. Tomorrow it's back to the mail trail.

That's Hayden. He's 16. One of my sons. He built this coal forge with help from my neighbor and family. He sought out a mentor in our community and learned how to forge steel and weld. He's never been to school. Homeschooled, if you want to call it schooling at all.

I don't fully understand the process. Because I spent 14 years in some sort of schooling or another. I just read about homeschooling in my mid twenties. It made sense. And I like to try things that make sense to me. So we did.

I understand it's not for everybody. I am glad schools do exist. I am also thankful we have the freedom not to send our kids if we don't want to.

GM🔥 It's ten to eight. Sunday. The fire in the photo about burned down. No one awake yet. I've been up since 4:30. That's when I get up to go to work. To deliver mail.

I waited an hour and a half to start my morning routine. A cold shower, then 40 minutes of meditation.

I didn't have to be anywhere on time. So I pet the cat that purs next to my head in bed. Scratch my wife's arm. Tell her I love her. She doesn't hear me most of the time. I go in and hug my 16 year old son in bed when he's sound asleep.

It keeps the worry at bay. It gets me out of myself. Relationship. Touch. A way to be home again.

I know I need to be tough, stoic disciplined .I do that too. That was the past 6 days..

There's that voice in back of my head telling me I have "free" time. I should be doing this, that, and every other god damn thing.

Dis ease is what it is. Sometimes I think smoking weed would fix it. Drinking worked until the next morning. Then the worry would hit harder. I really could see it when I started meditating.

The worry started up again when I started working full time for the Post office. That was officially 3 years ago. But as a part timer I was going full time back in 2020 already.

I have spent my whole life trying to understand this worry. Because there's something inside of me that tells me it's not supposed to be there. Always concerned about a future collapse of this or that.

A coworker and I got all dystopian about the data centers and AI yesterday morning. We're both middle aged men. Our kids mostly old enough to be looking at life beyond mom and Dad.

Another coworker, a young woman of 24 listening in says, "I want to have kids, but with all the AI stuff happening now I don't know."

The only thing I could tell her after a bit of silence was I was dead set against having kids until I was 34. Then I wasn't. And it was one of the best things I ever did. Maybe the best.

That's what's on my mind right now. I look forward to being outside working around our place and helping out with our native plant nursery.

Bought it during Covid. It's from southern Wisconsin. We got it home in the early hours of the morning. I ran it out of gas about a mile from the house. Close to the Mackey crick as a matter of fact.

I went to work the next day. Annie came down with Covid. I called her to come in and help me. I didn't know the route that well. I was a sub at the time. Under great protest she came in and helped me anyway.

GM🔥 It's 56 out there. Not supposed to get much warmer today. Looks like I will still be doing morning fires this week. I expect to be done sometime next week. My journal says I haven't went beyond the second seek of May in the past

I'll miss it and be relieved as usual. It's relaxing to sit in front of the fire and it's work The break is nice. I forget the fires, falls rolls around, and the cold helps me remember and appreciate them again.

We helped Annie prepare plants and things for Opening Day (May 8th!) of the nursery yesterday. A busy day. Good to be home working around the place. I did get a nap in though. All is well We'll be back at it today.

GM🔥 I am in front of morning fire 203. It's 50 out there. Supposed to hit 70 today, then cool off to highs in the 40's for the next couple of days. The house will get warm today, but after today it'll be nice. That's if the forecast holds. There's always that.

Looking forward to 2 days off. To fall into the rhythm of family, home, and place. 12 out of the past 14 days have been postal rhythm. Might as well say the past 2 weeks have been. One day off is enough to catch my breath, then hit it again.

GM🔥 Saturday. It got down to 27 last night. Left the hose on. Thankfully it wasn't frozen at 4:30 this morning. Took the sprayer off and emptied what wasn't frozen.

The Full Moon caught my attention before bed. That was about midnight. It was straight south and somewhat small I thought for a Full Moon. There will be another one on May 31st. The Blue Moon. Two this month.

I have Monday off. That'll give me 2 days in a row. Looking forward to it. It's been a couple of weeks of 6 days a week.

Annie will be potting barefoot plants that they delivered yesterday. Wasn't me. Must've beem FedEx or UPS.

They'll hopefully root in in a timely manner and she'll sell them.

GM. When my Grandpa moved my Grandma up here back in the mid-fifties she said it shocked her. She was from Southern Wisconsin, the Portage/Pardeeville area.

Anyone who has been to both places understands there's more people and money and less trees down there.

She struggled as a young woman in a foreign land.

When I moved in with her and my Grandpa in '92 it shocked me, too. I've written about this. I was also from southern Wisconsin . . . Beaver Dam.

Sometimes she would say, when my uncle would chide her calling this place God's country, that this is the country God forgot about.

It would irritate me and make me think.

At 51 years old I might have a better understanding what was going on in me. I knew at some level, but didn't know how to express it as an adolescent, that God's hand is in all land.

It's never forgotten about. The land has its own volition. It's own mechanisms to keep things running smoothly. An open book for all eyes to see.

Everything from the rabbit to the deer to us exists in the Hand of God. There's no escaping it. There's only being awake or asleep to it.

My Grandma has the cleanest house known to man. We used to joke with her and say you could eat off her floor. My cousin would sometimes tiptoe across the carpet in the front room that was never used. We'd joke saying it might set off alarms.

To this day, in her mideghties living with my mother, her oldest daughter, she still has "housework" to do. The house immaculate. Two housecleaners in one house. Double trouble and tension.

I remember back in my 30's, after getting acquainted with ideas that helped me see the world differently, wishing a walk in the woods for my Grandma.

Because maybe it was she that forgot about the land. I don't know. She has no idea what ecology is. How Thoreau understood the land at the level he did. Things like that. I understand. And to understand is to forgive, as Freud said.

Remembering myself on this Sunday morning, a day off from the mail trail!

I had a long day on the Mail Trail yesterday. A lot of Amazon packages and mail to deliver.

One guy keeps telling me he doesn't go to town anymore. His family just orders what they need and it shows up.

Hard to believe people used to laugh at Jeff Bezos and Amazon. Said they'd never make it. Wasn't worth investing in.

Now he's despised by many for having more money than you or I would probably know what to do with.

Off to start the mail jeep in a few minutes. It's 25 out there. I'll let it warm up a bit. Always nice to get into to something semi warm. Plus I think it's better on the engine and transmission. I pull out of my driveway it's 0 to 60 east on E.

Stacked BTC @ 75K this morning. I should just go all in! My full days wages into it. Fuck it. Let it ride. Not quite there yet though.

I do want to eventually run a node though. I've heard they're not plug and play though.

I stop in at my mom's today. I step in and say hi to her and my Grandma and hand them the mail daily. My grandma is starting to call her the "woman that lives here." It's getting to my mom.

We broke ground in 2005. We moved in 2008. During those years we lived in the old farmhouse in our front yard. Which is slowly falling down and returning to the earth, like we all do.

It took discipline to build it. It's taken discipline to live in it. Wisconsin winters are long and cold. We have one source of heat: The masonry stove that the earth roof rests on.

I lit Morning Fire 189 this morning. We'll break 200 like we do every year. We're already cutting firewood for next winter.

We built it debt free. We were Bitcoiners back then, but didn't know it yet. Creating something of value and not spending beyond our means.

My grandma, who survived the Great Depression, used to say that a lot: Don't live beyond your means!

I miss that. There was a wisdom in it. I could feel it beyond the words.

Yet I knew it was different times. We were encouraged to spend, go into debt for this or that, and live by impulse.

After the jets crashed into the Trade Towers on September 11th, 2001 President Bush reminded us to go shopping.

That's it for now. I was out in the front yard getting ready to plug my tire, looked at the house, and had to sit down and write.

It's my day off. I have some space to write about place. There's power in place. I like it when I can tap into it.

GM. Alone in front of fire 189 like usual. Well, the cat just crossed in front of me moving from one window sill to another.

Outside sunny. Still below freezing at 7AM. When I was out there at 5AM frost on the ground stars shining.

It's a day off today kind of. The red mail jeep has a flat tire. Picked up a screw on the mail route. Don't know if I'm going to plug it or take it in to get it patched.

That involves running it town 15 miles one way. Which involves time and money. The former scarce with only one day off this week.

Usually I'd take it to my neighbors. But he's in Florida with his family and the son that stayed behind away for drill weekend in the Marines.

There's other things waiting for me to do out there. Firewood, nursery work, septic issues, etc.

For right now though, I'm going to sit still in front of this fire. And wait awhile before the wheels start turning. Because I can. And it's Sunday. It feels like the appropriate thing to do.

My son takes his test to get his driver's license today. Everyone thinks he'll pass. It's his first attempt. I flunked my first time. So did my wife. We'll see! If I was to put money on it I put it on he'll pass.

It takes me back to those times. My kids are saints compared to what I was. I was facing felony charges at that age. Got my license in the Fall, lost them in the spring. Drinking and driving. Trying to outrun the cops. Anyway....

But once you understand it, you’ll see the world of investing differently.

What is it?

In the early 1700s, Richard Cantillon noticed a simple pattern:
When new money enters an economy, it doesn’t reach everyone at once.

The name they gave him at the rescue was Blake. Now he's associated with William Blake, the great 18th century English poet

Last night, we learned while sharing ice cream together, our oldest son and his wife will be having a baby. Another addition to our place.

I stacked Sats at 66K this morning. I wanted to stack more than I did, but was afraid I'd overdraw our bank account. I put a check in the night deposit last night. I didn't know what would go through first: the withdrawal from Strike or the deposit.

Despite the cool temps things are waking around here. Annie was out checking the native seedlings behind the house yesterday. They're emerging in the plug trays. Saw a flock of robins and redwing blackbirds on the baseball diamond in Earl.

Another day off from the mail trail. I stacked at 70K this morning. When I went to bed it was at 68K.

I thunbed through Facebook for maybe a minute this morning. An influencer posted there is a 5 day ceasefire in Iran. He said the markets reacted immediately after the announcement. Oil dropped, etc.

Maybe that's why Bitcoin is up. That doesn't matter so much to me. Conviction that it is the best currency in the world does.

So I keep stacking despite the noise.
