“There is no alternative”

TINA! This is what Margaret Thatcher said about her draconian free market policies. It's an easy thing to tell ourselves about compliance to any dominant system. But it's incomplete. The complete sentence is, "There is no alternative unless we're prepared to endure short-term discomfort as we push back against the dominant system." So the real question isn't, "what's the alternative?"

https://seths.blog/2026/04/there-is-no-alternative/

      Redundancy and resilience

If it's important, don't ask the team to try harder. Instead, create the conditions for ordinary effort to produce redundant outputs that reduce crises. If quality is a problem, look at the system, not the people.

https://seths.blog/2026/03/redundancy-and-resilience/

      Embracing externalities

Freedom is something we desire. The freedom to choose, to speak up, to produce, to follow our passions and our dreams. And organizations in search of efficiency, shortcuts or profits often argue for freedom as well. The freedom to organize their production and to go to market without regulation or hassle. Our actions, though, have consequences. That power plant might be venting steam into the river that millions depend on.

https://seths.blog/2025/01/embracing-externalities-2/

Yes, but how does it work?

I worked with Arthur C. Clarke at the very beginning of my career. He's most famous for saying, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Magic isn't such a bad thing. And we certainly have plenty of advanced technology around. Advanced in the sense that we can't be bothered to take the time to understand it. A friend showed me his electric water bottle.

https://seths.blog/2024/10/yes-but-how-does-it-work/
