My Samsung phone is so frustrating. Even when I'm using an alternative keyboard, the OS insists on autoincorrecting my typing. I cannot find a place to turn it off.

Apart from the annoyance where I need to watch out for it corrupting my words or inserting or moving around periods, it also means that in e.g. Termux the terminal won't receive characters until they form a full word.

All autocorrect is turned off in AnySoftKeyboard. On a Huawei, that works as expected. I've turned off all autocorrect in Samsung Keyboard, in case that would help. It doesn't.

I went in expecting very little. Is it possible in the, what, third movie reboot (?) to tell a fresh and interesting story about the alien boy scout?

Apparently! Gunn and his writers pulled it off! Just the right amount of familiar, just the right amount of stirring the pot.

None of the 90s grimdark, but also not too much of the camp (but also not too little!). Very human, very grounded, but also very heroic. Excellent surprise twist that sets the launchpad for further stories and character development!

Great score, great visuals, great conflict, great pacing, great and interesting pick of rogues and heroes gallery.

Clark, Lois and Lex casting: Excellent. Chemistry, charisma, conviction.

This argument gets thrown around so casually and it frustrates me every time, because it betrays a way of thinking that is something like "my dollar has an intrinsic value and your dollar has an intrinsic value, and one of us is getting a bad deal".

Your number of your dollars is an arbitrary scale for measuring your assets. Your assets didn't e.g. lose value because the exchange rate fell. The exchange rate fell to reflect that your assets are worth less in the global economy, for whatever complex or simple reasons, but the exchange rate itself cannot be a reason, it is an indicator and a measurement.

You can argue "but people manipulate the exchange rate, so it's a real thing", but how they manipulate it is by offering value for your currency or for things rated in your currency, or by restricting or providing the availability of those things to suppress or stimulate supply compared to demand.

Governments don't just declare an exchange rate, if they want to move the exchange rate they have to back it up with financial or legal action to make it effective.

It's amazing how many people out there pretend that they believe that Tesla is the only EV, or the best one, or the best value for money, or the best EV for the environment, and that boycotting Tesla would be some kind of hypocrisy if you believe in humanity's objective not to destroy our habitat.

In the US market, two Tesla models are the most popular EV models and Tesla is the most popular EV brand, but that is true pretty much only in the US.

The most popular EV brand in the world is BYD. Here in HK they start from 209 000 HKD, that's about 27 000 USD, but it's a middle-class executive car, it's not the cheapest or most cost-efficient EV.

If you're in India, you can buy a Tata EV for 2 lakh. That's 200 000 INR ≈ 2 300 USD. Yes, two thousand. Now, I don't know what it would take to bring a Tata up to US code, but of those 40 000 USD in difference between the Tata and the starting price (before federal subsidies) for a Tesla, I doubt all of it is safety features.

Anyone with Ansible/AWX experience accessing HTTP APIs on protected networks?

I have tried documentation, the global web and chat with colleagues. Time to bring on the fedi human search.

Using ansible on switches that require you to come from a protected network is easy, you set up your ssh command to go through a jumphost. Accessing switches or firewalls that use an HTTP API is easy, you use a package that talks to the HTTP API, probably using the httpapi package.

But an HTTP API where you need to come from a protected network? Manually it's easy, just `[code]ssh -D[/code]` to a jumphost/bastion in the right network and tell curl to use a SOCKS proxy.

On the Ansible side though, I can't find the right place to get httpapi to go through a SOCKS proxy, and I'm not sure where's the best place to run that ssh command.

Has anyone on Fedi already solved this problem?

US people and Swedish people have very different relations to medication.

Swedes generally undermedicate. I have made a vow to compensate for it and take an aspirin when there's a rational reason to do so. And to keep aspirin and ibuprofen around to enable that. I know the names of paracetamol and ibuprofen because of a catchy song in a popular ad in the 90s.

When I watch some US shows, medical brands are part of the vocabulary and I have to stop and look them up to follow the dialog. The intended audience is so fluent in dozens of brands for various states of mind or body, that a character can go "ugh, I need my $BRAND" and you're supposed to know "oh, he's sad", or "oh, she's jittery for the presentation tomorrow", and I'm probably missing the more subtle "oh, that person is probably taking too much of their $OTHERBRAND".

I think that is the opioid crisis. Not some shady guy in a garage and/or another country responding to the demand.

I think the right balance is probably somewhere in between.

I heard the term "TABs" for the first time, in an accessibility context. TAB stands for "Temporarily Able-Bodied", and is a term that puts a focus on the fact that having a disability or being able-bodied is not an essential trait, it's where you are in life.

Of course, some people may be able-bodied their whole life, and you should build universally useful things not because you might personally benefit but because it's the right thing to do. But I think the term is an interesting twist on things, that might help people put things in perspective.

It was becoming clear that Qvitter was the future of the Fediverse. It was being called the Fediverse now, at least by some people, since around May 2012 if I remember our fedi archaeology accurately.

GNU Social / StatusNet was looking old-fashioned and Qvitter was the new and cool web application that looked like Twitter 2013 instead of Twitter 2008. Unfortunately it also broke the Wayback Machine, so today I'm grateful to the sites that retained the old-school UI as their default.

Early on quitter.se seems to have kept old-school the default, so we can see my profile page and that I joined on 2013-07-21.
