Hello, how are you doing? This is #NakedDieFriday speaking, and today's post is the continuation of the one from last week. It is the second die out of Conexant FM336PLUS, a modem chip. Unfortunately, there was some trash on the die which I could not remove.

The die is larger than the other one and appears to be fully digital. There are a lot of memory blocks as well. Let's have a more detailed look.

Full-res map: http://infosecdj.net/map/conexant/fm336plus-b/infosecdj_mz_nikpa40x_66p/

#electronics #reverseengineering #microscopy

Let's get this #nakeddiefriday started, people!

The guest of today is one TMS70C42A by TI. It is a 8-bit MCU carrying 4KB of ROM and 256B of RAM, with three timers and a UART.

This particular die was bit by gremlins, and a small part of it is missing; nothing crucial though. Let's have a walk around. 🧵

SiPron page: https://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php?id=infosecdj:ti:tms70c42a

#electronics #reverseengineering #microscopy

The datasheet mentions that the max spec configuration is 2KB IRAM, 2KB XRAM, and 128K mask ROM. I strongly suspect they just use the same die for all of them.

The mask ROM is easy to spot, it is the largest one and consists of 8 blocks. Block structure is rather peculiar with sawtooth-like patterns all across. So far I've only seen Siemens/Infineon employ this particular design; if anyone has any further info please leave a comment as I'd love to learn more about it.

Some of them have amazing regularity, hinting at parallel processing of data. Almost universally it is done 16-ways, which checks out with the internal data bus width being 16 bits. It is hard to pinpoint which ones does what exactly.
