They invent arbitrary rules like "ROM doesn't count" that actually go against the goals and spirit of their supposed moral values.

It's a farce and I can't take those people seriously, nor anyone who seriously believes "zero AI involved in my software" is a viable thing going forward.

Go support projects that don't embrace AI and stop worrying about the supply chain, because that's a lost cause and acting like it isn't is a losing battle that leads to madness.

Multiple core dependency projects are allowing AI.

Given the state of the world re AI usage, there was no way that battle was going to be won. You'd need something like "AI is ruled illegal/copyright infringing across the board in some important jurisdiction" for people to consider it toxic enough to not touch and fork each and every project whose maintenance team disagrees.

The way FOSS is interconnected, it is simply not possible to "hard partition" the dependency tree on moral concerns at scale. Pretty much the only thing that can do that is a legal code red, and it seems the lawyers have decided AI isn't one (even though many disagree).

A friend asked Gemini to do a security assessment of a recent open source macOS app (look through code, developer behavior, user forums, etc).

It spat out a 2,500 word essay painting the whole thing as a massive backdoor, talking to C&C servers, reading your chat messages, bypassing macOS security, the works. Entirely coherent on the face of it, overdone but it *could* have been real and someone not in infosec would easily buy it.

100% hallucinated. Gemini wrote an entire infosec fanfic based on nothing. Worst thing I found on the real repo was a symlink traversal bug that was quickly fixed by the dev.

This was using the "Deep Research" function in "Pro" mode on an "Ultra" account.

This thread is such a massive failure of the community bug reporting process.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/1s8jevj/a_message_to_fedora_devs_please_stop_interfering/

Apparently there's a small but significant fraction of users who see their browser home reset to the Fedora home on Firefox updates or other circumstances... and they're all convinced this is some kind of evil intentional Fedora packaging feature that hijacks your preferences on every update, and that it must happen to everyone (it does not).

So far there is *one* known hypothesis for why this can happen (it involves Firefox Sync), but that doesn't cover all instances because some affected users claim not to use Sync. I reported this one upstream so hopefully there will be a solution soon. Nobody had until now...

Meanwhile, **not a single affected user has bothered to write up reliable repro steps or follow through with maintainers on tracking down the root cause**.

I've also looked at upstream bugs and found several shaped like "Firefox lost my prefs on upgrade", but none of them were followed through to a root cause either.

Of course, when Firefox loses the home page pref and it reverts to about:home, people shrug and set it back... but when Fedora Firefox does the same and it reverts to start.fedoraproject.org, it's clearly a Red Hat conspiracy to hijack people's browsers and they demand Fedora remove the default home page branding override entirely, instead of working with a developer to get the bug fixed...

There's a lot of discourse on Twitter about people using LLMs to solve CTF challenges. I used to write CTF challenges in a past life, so I threw a couple of my hardest ones at it.

We're screwed.

At least with text-file style challenges ("source code provided" etc), Claude Opus solves them quickly. For the "simpler" of the two, it just very quickly ran through the steps to solve it. For the more "ridiculous" challenge, it took a long while, and in fact as I type this it's still burning tokens "verifying" the flag even though it *very obviously* found the flag and it knows it (it's leetspeak and it identified that and that it's plausible). LLMs are, indeed, still completely unintelligent, because no human would waste time verifying a flag and second-guessing itself when it very obviously is correct.

But that doesn't matter, because it found it.

The thing is, CTF challenges aren't about inventing the next great invention or having a rare spark of genius. CTF challenges are about *learning* things by *doing*. You're supposed to enjoy *the process*. The whole point of a well-designed CTF challenge is that anyone, given enough time and effort and self-improvement and learning, can solve it. The goal isn't actually to get the flag, otherwise you'd just ask another team for the flag (which is against the rules of course). The goal is to get the flag *by yourself*. If you ask an LLM to get the flag for you, you aren't doing that.

(Continued)

Several people have reported that Spout2PW runs at 1FPS. If you see this, please let me know what Linux distribution/version you use, and also type `pipewire --version` in a terminal and tell me the version!

I *think* it has to do with an old version of PipeWire.

Please be specific when warning about "AI" in software!

AI is just a buzzword for machine learning, and we all use machine learning every day. VTubing wouldn't exist without it (face tracking). All good TTS is using ML, and that's fine, if it's consensually and ethically trained.

Good ML runs on your phone and didn't require scraping the internet to train, and has existed for many years.

What the techbros are pushing isn't just any AI/ML, it's a particularly bad version of it.

Do you have an Nvidia card? Do you want to use Spout2 on Linux? Please help fund a test card!

The Spout2 for Linux solution will support most GPUs (including Nvidia+NVK), but the Nvidia proprietary driver is weird!

TIL the way piano keys are laid out is not well documented on the internet, and not even standardized!

This site explains the problem... but neither of the solutions it proposes are what actually happens as far as I can tell.

http://datagenetics.com/blog/may32016/index.html

On both my KORG and my Yamaha keyboards, the key giveaway is that C# and D# are significantly further apart than F# and G# (and G# and A#). You can easily feel this if you slide your finger on top of D and G/A.

I don't have a good way to measure exactly, but just looking closely at my keyboards, I think what actually happens is roughly:<li>F through B are laid out as in "Scenario #1" on that site.</li><li>C is like F and E is like B. Then, KORG and Yamaha do two things:<ul><li>Yamaha places C# and D# at the same relative positions to C and E as F# and A# are to F and B, which leaves D an oddball white key: its "stem" is much wider than that of the other white keys. Also maybe F is a bit weird?</li><li>KORG cheats more: They split the difference between the D stem (which is slightly wider) and the <strong>gaps</strong> around C# and D# (which are now positioned slightly closer together than Yamaha's, but still further apart than F# and G#).</li></ul></li><li>For both designs, I believe the underlying mechanism/sensors are evenly spaced across the octave, and the mismatch (most prominent at the boundary between E and F) is just handwaved away (sensors are not on the centerline of keys).</li>

I wonder if this correct, and what other solutions are out there in the wild?

This is a Windows app running under Proton, with the Windows-world Spout2 frame sharing bridged to Linux-world PipeWire frame sharing.

Basically the entire VTubing world (and other fields doing video mixing/transfer) uses Spout2 on Windows apps, so this allows those apps to share video when run under Wine/Proton.

The native linux equivalent would be libfunnel, which is something I wrote to make PipeWire frame sharing easy on Linux. The Spout2 bridge uses it behind the scenes too.

Fascinating. I found a bug in the panel driver algorithm of my monitor (!)

A certain glitch pattern makes it smear horizontally. But then a white dot on black grid pattern cancels it out. Even just one or two rows of it. ??????

I have 3 similar monitors (27" LG IPS 4K) and it only happens on the oldest one (mirrored HDMI feed to all 3). I tried changing the settings in the OSD menu but nothing made a difference.

I think what's going on is there's some kind of optimization (power saving??) where by default it uses some kind of drive mode that isn't suitable for certain pixel patterns (high horizontal frequency?). And then it detects that pattern in the image to switch to a different drive mode. But the glitch image does not trigger the heuristic, perhaps due to its alternating colors, so it can't display it properly. Maybe the heuristic only considers luminance instead of R,G,B individually???

If I just show the white dot pattern without the glitch image, I still see a subtle change in color for the whole screen when it appears (only needs one or two rows of pixels, but there's a large minimum width, 100px or so), so there's definitely a global mode change it triggers...

For example, for any group of, say, 16x16 LEDs you can just treat them as one summed light as far as any surface more than, say, 4x the tile dimension away.

My intuition is this can be solved with mip maps, without even baking anything. Your LED screen is a mipmapped texture. For each pixel to shade, compute angles/distance to the bounds of the LED screen. Determine mip level to sample at, then iterate across the samples at that mip level and shade. If the angle is highly anisotropic, subdivide and conquer.

The end result you want to go for is that any shaded pixel more than 4w (w=the screen size away) (or whatever factor) just computes shading once, against the average of the pixel values (highest mip level). As you get closer, you do more shading iterations, so at 1w you'd be doing 4x4 lighting samples. But as you get closer, at 0.5w, you'd do 4x4 for the sub tile you're closest to, and then lower resolution for the LEDs further away at an acute angle.

The actual thresholds to use and math for the angle calculations etc would take some tweaking, but I think this should be capable of some pretty good results without overly stressing the GPU (depends on how many objects are close to the screen to an extent).

She's just good at acting like a victim and trauma dumping (while lying about facts and events). And apparently that's all it takes...

I do have a therapist...

When it comes into view again, if you didn't have the correct state, you get a jump. This can be very obvious in some situations.

This is even more important when you are tracking more than one person and they can obscure each other, or when there's other objects in the scene like musical instruments.

Cameras can't see what they can't see, there's no way to eliminate the edge case jank with a single point of view if you want complete freedom of motion. That also helps with depth for the same reason, no matter how well depth estimation works most of the time it's going to have bad angles where the estimation is low quality.

And the quality of the camera also matters. A cheap 30FPS webcam with poor low light quality isn't going to cut it. One of the amazing things about the iPhone ARKit model & camera is that it somehow works well in really low light ^^

I don't use an iPhone for face tracking because it's the only option, I use it because Apple's ML model (and that's all it is in there) is good and externalizing this makes for a more robust setup. Others do use webcam tracking, the cheaper options are out there for those who want them (and have the GPU perf to spare on them, which I don't).

For FBT, the setup I linked is using a depth sensor. Even if you can get similar results with webcam tracking under some conditions, depth sensors should always be more robust and reliable to variations in clothing etc. and allow for a simpler ML model to perform better.

This is *really* cool! Full body tracking in a dedicated box. It's a ToF sensor (Kinect 2 style) with on-board ML processing. Same concept as using an iPhone for ARKit face tracking (not just a camera, but also all the smarts).

I always want streaming to be as friction-free as possible, so the idea of having to put on trackers never sat well with me... this looks like a great alternative! ✨️

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-hD5800V-8
