A group of companies that specialize in tracking international shipments of sensitive technologies is backing a Capitol Hill bill that would require America’s most powerful AI chips to incorporate stronger security mechanisms aimed at preventing the chips from reaching China and other adversaries.
The letter, signed by six companies, says the Chip Security Act (CSA) would increase American chip companies’ competitiveness and close key loopholes in the U.S. export control regime. The move clashes with claims from semiconductor lobbying groups that the requirements would constrain America’s booming chip industry.
Sent to congressional leadership Thursday morning and seen by NBC News, the dispatch instead argues that more robust security verification would assure chip customers and manufacturers that they are abiding by sensitive restrictions on chip sales. The companies argue that the boosted confidence will “lead to increased sales, faster export approvals, larger transactions, greater access to new markets, and more expansive chip deals.”

Police, border security, and other government agencies already comprise Leonardo’s customer base, and with this technology, those clients seek to correlate footage from these cameras to phones, tablets, wearables, AirTags, and, naturally, the electronics inside cars themselves.

Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly planning layoffs as new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma plans a “reset” for the beleaguered gaming business.
Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, first reported Wednesday that Xbox was planning “major job cuts” within the division in early July after Microsoft’s fiscal year ends on June 30. The same day, Sharma and Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said in a memo to employees that after their first 100 days on the job reviving Xbox, the next 100 days would be devoted to a major overhaul — or a reset, to borrow gaming parlance.
After touting the recent successes of Xbox — Microsoft has been hard at work to reverse the decline in subscribers to its Game Pass service — Sharma and Booty laid out the realities the gaming business needs to navigate.
Microsoft has poured billions of dollars into its gaming division over the past five years, even excluding the $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. The memo said investments in Xbox have surpassed $20 billion since 2021. At the same time, the division’s annual revenue has declined by nearly $500 million.
“Going forward, this cannot continue,” the memo said.
Amid the artificial intelligence boom, which has helped boost Microsoft’s cloud computing sales, Xbox is facing a hardware component crisis. The cost of storage components for gaming hardware has quadrupled since last fall and Microsoft expects another significant increase heading into 2026 holiday shopping season.
As AI demand increases, companies have been spending more on specialized hardware. That coupled with AI’s extraordinary need for memory is leading to higher costs.
For consumers that means demand is outpacing supply for Xbox consoles. Because of this, Xbox needs a new business model for its next-generation console, code-named Helix, according to the memo.
“Our current platform infrastructure is not built for the battle ahead. … We’ve become too reliant on vendors to operate our systems and must become more self-reliant as an engineering culture to build for the future,” the memo said.

A new bill has been proposed in the US Senate that would permit artificial intelligence (AI) data center firms to bypass federal electricity regulations by building their own energy infrastructure.
The DATA Act of 2026 was proposed by Senator Tom Cotton (Republican, Arkansas) and would amend the Federal Power Act.
“American dominance in AI and other crucial emerging industries should not come at the expense of Arkansans paying higher energy costs,” Cotton said in a statement. “My bill will ensure that America can continue to lead in these spaces by eliminating outdated regulations.”
If passed the bill would create a new utility category called “consumer-regulated electric utilities” (CREUs), with companies who build their own independent power infrastructure falling under this new designation. In order to qualify for CREU, the utilities would have to be completed disconnected from the main grid and built solely to serve new electric loads. Consequently, if the utility subsequently connects to the grid it would lose its exempt status.

The war in Ukraine is forcing conflict analysts and others to reimagine traditional state-centric models of war, as it demonstrates that militaries are no longer primarily responsible for defining the challenges of the modern battlespace and then producing tenders for technological fixes. Instead, private tech companies increasingly explain the ideal battlespace to militaries, offering software and hardware products needed to establish real-time information edges. In the Russia-Ukraine war, private companies have sought to shape Ukrainian intelligence requirements. At the beginning of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s armed forces could not manage essential intelligence tasks. Ukraine’s military lacked its own software and hardware for real-time information dominance and instead accepted support from private tech companies. These companies provide AI and big data tools that fuse intelligence and surveillance data to enhance the military’s situational awareness. As the war has progressed, however, the Ukrainians have sought to develop their own government situational awareness and battle management platform called Delta. The platform was developed as a bottom-up solution, “initially focused on a single, highly effective application: a digital map for situational awareness.”2 Over time, it expanded into a robust software ecosystem used by most of Ukraine’s military, from frontline soldiers to top commanders. This in part reflects Ukraine’s desire to retain direct sovereign control over what the U.S. military refers to as Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control infrastructure (CJADC2), which manages networked sensors, data, platforms, and operations to deliver information advantages across all military services and with allies.

Affinity’s one-time-purchase model was one of the most appealing things about its older software offerings, standing in stark contrast to Adobe’s controversial subscription-based creative suite. While Canva’s own design platform can be used for free, it also locks most of its capabilities behind subscription paywalls, which raised concerns that Affinity would adopt Canva’s subscription-based approach following the acquisition. Yes, Linux is very secure, which is my priority, but it is a very limited operating system: WhatsApp? No. Roblox? No. Signal? No. Practically nothing is available on Linux, although there are alternatives to those apps, but few are available on Linux. Microsoft may spy on you in Windows, but it’s the most popular, customisable, and the one that developers release their PC apps on first. MacOS may have few games, but it’s fast, simple, and very nice. What do you think? Is Linux a good OS for you? If you use Linux, my respects. I don’t have a PC, but if I were to download Linux, I would go for Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

That disruption meant Chinese netizens couldn’t reach most websites hosted outside China, which is inconvenient. The incident also blocked other services that rely on port 443, which could be more problematic because many services need to communicate with servers or sources of information outside China for operational reasons. For example, Apple and Tesla use the port to connect to offshore servers that power some of their basic services.

Or, that’s what many thought.
In 2023, 436,400 cassettes were sold in the United States, according to the most recent data available from Luminate, an entertainment data firm. Although that’s a far cry from the 440 million cassettes sold in the 1980s, it’s a sharp increase from the 80,720 cassettes sold in 2015 and a notable revival for a format that had been all but written off.
Cassettes might not be experiencing the resurgence of vinyls or even CDs, but they are making a bit of a comeback, spurred by fans wanting an intimate experience with music and nostalgia, said Charlie Kaplan, owner of online store Tapehead City.
“People just like having something you can hold and keep, especially now when everything’s just a rented file on your phone,” Kaplan told CNN.
“Tapes provide a different type of listening experience — not perfect, but that’s part of it. Flip it over, look at the art and listen all the way through. You connect with the music with more of your senses,” he said.
