That was my first thought. But then I was wondering if a threadiverse community using something like a Lemmy or PieFed service might be better.

But as with FediGroups, those groups are tied to the service they're set up on. A Matrix room solves that problem, but potentially introduces others.

Sure, now that Loops exists, it's probably the better choice for posting ephemeral microvideos, as part of a social conversation, like we do with text micro-posts. But Loops isn't constrained to this kind of social communication usage. It supports videos up to 3mins long, and people could just as easily use it to publish videos they might otherwise put on a YouTub channel. In the hopes they'll still be watched and valued many years hence.

In this case I think Tree was mistaking the former for the latter. A PDS host is more like a private club, the Relay the road outside. But that's a mistake of interpretation, and no excuse to dogpile them or chase them around the net harassing them.

Most of the workers' rights removed by the ECA were never restored. Union membership and activity remains relatively low. Despite the best efforts of some very committed union organisers and supporters.

Two generations of kiwi workers have come into the workforce since the ECA. Many of whom have no experience of union membership, and no awareness of what unions are, or why they might benefit from joining or organising one.

First they passed the Employment Contracts Act. Criminalised most forms of worker organising, and dismantling the system by which workers - through their unions - negotiated pay and conditions for entire industries.

Despite weak reforms by successive Labour govts, most of this is still in place. A major reason for the wages gap with Oz.

For years I've made use of old Windows PCs by reconditioning them with #GNU/#Linux OS. Usually Trisquel, or if the hardware won't support it, Mint.

After a bit of experimentation, I settled on a manual partition scheme. Which allows me to test new versions or other distros, and keep my files on a separate partition. To avoid having to restore from backups every time I upgrade my OS.

But I can't seem to get an OS to boot on newer devices with Restricted Boot, using manual partitioning. Help?

Bill Maher prides himself on avoiding ideological capture. But his take on Gaza is pretty much the standard, ahistorical IDF apologetics, and his comments on trans rights are similarly the standard Republican talking points.

I do agree with him though that people need to be free to express this stuff, otherwise they end up thinking they're part of a "silent majority" rather than diseducated by electoralist propaganda.

I feel like this has context that isn't in the thread. Telling someone off for using the N word is kinda racist ... when they're black and you're white. Under any other circumstances it would be anti-racist. Context matters.
