I have in my garage a very nice Browning Gold Hunter. This shotgun has brought hours of joy to its owner over the course of numerous duck hunts in the wonderful wetlands of Florida.<br/>On one such hunt the shotgun braved the brackish waters of the intracoastal and unfortunately salt air and moisture found its way into the threads of the choke tube among every other contact point. The owner being tired and following the why do today what you can do tomorrow did not disassemble and clean this shotgun upon returning home. Which brings us to my garage...<br/>The choke is seized in the barrel and the barrel is seized where it collars the magazine and enters the action. After numerous visits to various retail gunsmiths at Bass Pro, Cabelas when it was around and sporting goods stores the owner was informed it cannot be repaired. Their patience is almost gone.<br/>My patience is in letting the penetrating oil do its job to unseize the barrel at which point i will then soak the muzzle in a bath of kroil. After building a jig to secure the barrel to prevent marring the finish and mechanical damage from bending I will then apply heat and torque using the longest breaker bar I can find. But until the barrel is removed, I exercise patience. <br/><br/>I type this to say that we should not always be in a rush and put off what may feel to be an inconvenient task. Take pleasure in the small things like cleaning a gun, making your bed or brushing your teeth. The small acts of preventative maintenance on our lives will pay off, removing the need to visit your friendly gun mechanic because your negligence broke your favorite toy. <br/><br/>And remember there's only 37 days until duck season opens in the Sunshine State. The benefit to this hold is rapid target acquisition but the drawback is that your target is obscured by the sights.<br/><br/>6 O&#39;Clock looks weird to those unfamiliar and can feel unnatural to new shooters. The sights are aligned at the base of the target and as seen in the picture above the point of impact is the bullseye. Used by bullseye target shooters this hold provides a clear picture of the target and can provide more precision and accuracy for competitions.<br/><br/>Our last but in no way inferior is the center hold. This sight picture is perfect when the top of the sights bisect the center of the target (Get it? Center hold, center of the target. Screw you puns are funny.) Using this hold will provide greater target visibility and can contribute to more precise shots. Not a bad use case for self defense, competitions (USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge) or hunting for your badass hand gun hunters. <br/><br/>Now the trick is knowing what hold your brand new pistol has and the information isn&#39;t as clear cut as you might think due to lack of documentation. Conflicting sources claim that #Glock are center hold and combat hold. #Sig_Sauer comes from the factory with a combat hold and i have a Ruger Mk IV that came with a 6 O&#39;Clock (luckily this was in the manual). The best plan of action I can recommend would be to get out to the range and test your pistol from the bench rest or with a sturdy sandbag/range bag for a foundation. Consistent form will be key here and removing variables will help you determine which hold your sights are using. An umbrella, a garden cart, cooler and sunscreen will take a fun day and make it fanfuckingtastic. I saw all manner of DIY reloading benches, PVC frames and carts for people to carry their gear while I am lugging my loaded bag around multiple action bays and not a bit of shade to be found. People relaxing under umbrellas between stages to keep that fireball from draining their energy and coolers to keep all manner of hydration and snackage safe. And finally a nice mineral sunscreen because sunburns suck and milk baths only do so much.<br/><br/>Many of us have a tendency to focus on the shooting gear we need (belt, holster, optics etc) but some simple normal items can take you to the next level and without being the new guy you won&#39;t know about them. I upgraded to an actual belt instead of stashing magazines in my pocket to allow easier access and faster reloads.
