I climbed Galer St. from Montlake to it only to find the tag jar empty, but a few moments later an old lady, who doesn't seem to know a lot about the tree (seems like the responsibility was placed on her), came out and refilled it. Yes, it's October, so they put skeletons around, which is a bit anticlimactic but funny. And of course I wrote a wish there. Someone else arrived later and doodled spirals on a new tag and dropped it off too.

I see that https://metrodemontreal.com has finally been revamped! (For years I thought it's dead, after the revamp fundraiser 404'ed and the forum crashed.) While I miss the old website layout (which is quite retro and focuses on graphics and layouts, as opposed to a fairly standard blog theme), I do appreciate the new photo essays (there are also a lot more photos now!) and the addition of train car positions for each platform.

Threads restricts ActivityPub federation so much (and also they just have different clientele) that there is no olive branch argument to be made. I think it's mostly a morality & content moderation argument, with some parts of misconception about power dynamics (whether Meta will EEE the Fediverse) and data control (of public posts). There are a lot of... let's say floating things on the Ship Canal: aside from the kayakers there are all sorts of cruises like pirate ship, floating saunas, floating bathtubs... and of course we wave to them and they react somewhat. Over the past weekend I joined a group and sailed on a raceboat on Lake Washington. First time on the water by a vessel that's not a ferry, cruise, or whatnot, so I was a bit clueless (and scaredy, I guess?)... Now that I've worked 2 months at Google (reminder: first job), and without breaking the rules, some thoughts:

* What you work on can be blocked by others, so context-switching is important.
* Context-switching is hard.
* There are so many tools and they constantly change (especially with AI).
* It's easy to socialize on-campus (be it lunch tables or sports); that hasn't yet translated off-campus.

So it should give like a few tens of thousands characters to work with, in theory. Note to self: in #iCloud Drive, folders can be considered app data merely by name, even if one never downloaded that exact app anywhere...

(I had a Cryptomator vault created on computer in my iCloud Drive but it was wrongly associated with "Cryptomater 1: Legacy" app which was paid, no longer in the app store, and never bought. iCloud started spamming storage warnings and the file size doesn't seem to match - maybe a partial download? - so I deleted it. Oh well, nothing important though.)

Genuine question: would tax-deductible charitable giving constitute a way to give some of your tax dollars to specific causes that you choose? Sure it may be limited in impact as opposed to national social benefits but still.

For the latter... I actually used Dreamweaver CC more than a decade ago... But with the advent of static site generators and Markdown-based workflows I think visual editors have fallen out of fashion and people now write HTML/CSS by hand. I'd recommend starting from someone else's site's source code, learn by example (including w3school, I guess) and tinker with it. For the record, https://codeberg.org/austinhuang/pages is mine.

If you got good networks IRL then you can skip LinkedIn entirely, but unfortunately we're not such people... It's not about having a complete profile, but if you got things to show off then you gotta let people find your presence (that's how I got referrals after begposting there), though I suppose if one's really cracked then a good GitHub profile can serve the same purpose. Also their job search is more comprehensive in my opinion.

Can I convert it to some no-expiry gift card (or online balance) of a business I shop at frequently (assuming I have one at that moment)? If it's not very inconvenient then I'd take the card. (Though when it's like $10 or $20 I'd rather take the lesser cash...)

Since I'd be leaving #Montreal in a few weeks I thought I'd have some #poutine before going to somewhere without that authentic Quebecois #food. So, got the Poutine St-Henri (large), plus a milkshake, at Green Spot. In hindsight I might've eaten too much for a simple lunch... But it was pretty good nevertheless.

Out of curiosity, and since not so many people tried to use #kagi to #translate *from* #LinkedIn speak to English, I decided to test it on an actual LinkedIn post on my feed (happens to be one using "AI" to replace interns): https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7438083732978425856/ . I respectfully disagree, my position on open registration is https://mstdn.party/@austin/116170793613011100 , and we literally do watch new accounts (and provide signals for others) with pretty good response time. I do think that rule-based automated tooling can go a long way and I should work on that. But at the end of the day whether to block us or not is your choice (and your users'), as long as you don't conflate that then we're good.
