A Small Upgrade to Astro 7

A Small Upgrade to Astro 7
I haven’t posted here for a little while. I just got back from South Africa, where I spent five days in the bush at Sabi Sands, going on safari twice a day and enjoying the nature and quiet, before heading further south to Cape Town. Coming back to the blog felt like a good moment to give it some attention, which was long overdue.
So I moved it from Astro 6 to Astro 7. If I did it right, you shouldn’t notice much. The posts, search, and RSS feed are still where they were.
The interesting changes are behind the scenes:
A Rust compiler for .astro files. Astro rewrote the compiler and made it stricter about malformed markup. That should mean faster builds and fewer HTML mistakes silently corrected for me.
Vite 8 and Rolldown. The newer build tooling should make bundling faster and keep the site aligned with the current Vite ecosystem.
Sätteri for Markdown and MDX. Astro’s new default processor is also written in Rust. This blog uses a custom Svelte renderer for its article bodies, so I won’t claim every word on the site suddenly renders faster, but it’s a welcome improvement to Astro’s content pipeline.
Astro reports 15–61% faster builds across its benchmarks. I haven’t timed my own site carefully enough to claim a number, but faster builds are always welcome when publishing a post.
The upgrade also gave me a chance to simplify how the site runs on Cloudflare Workers. The analytics proxy now lives in an Astro endpoint, and deployment uses Astro’s standard Worker entrypoint instead of a custom one. That’s less setup for me to remember the next time I change something.
There was one small gotcha: Astro 7 now uses JSX-style whitespace rules by default. Put <span>Hello</span> and <span>world</span> on separate lines, and the page can show Helloworld. Cassidy Williams ran into exactly this on her blog. I kept compressHTML: true in my Astro config, which preserves the old behavior without adding explicit spaces throughout my templates. A tiny setting, but a nice way to keep the words apart.
The best outcome for a personal site upgrade is a quieter maintenance story. The build tools move forward; the blog keeps feeling like the same place.

https://alexanderschroll.com/blog/a-small-upgrade-to-astro-7
