Something I've been curious about for a while. In the Hitchhiker's series, famously "so long, and thanks for all the fish" is a message the dolphins leave to humanity as they leave just before the destruction of the earth. Is this message, specifically the thanks:

(Boosts welcome.)

Sort of treat the overlays as plugins, with the linker building all of them for the same offset? That doesn't give you overlay to overlay calls, just overlay to base and then the base can call (ideally fixed) entry points in the overlay?

That could work for certain sorts of game elements and explode for others, of course. (And you'll have thought of all of this already...)

A little life hack: a while back I got a number of little LED night lights that have motion detection and light level sensing and plug into wall sockets, and plugged them in to random spare sockets. It's great; no more blundering around dark rooms, especially small ones like the bathroom.

Also they're handy for letting me know when it really is overcast and dim during the day. If I walk around and they come on, it's not my imagination, it really is that overcast.

People who are more into the vi world than I am: are there any other active, still out there vi clones than vim (and things forked from it, like neovim), nvi, and evil for GNU Emacs? I've heard of elvis but it seems relatively moribund (it's not packaged for Debian, for example).

(True classic vi is out there somewhere. I know of vile but I don't think it indents to be a version/clone/etc of vi, just to feel like it.)

Eg, you might have a 'refcount' struct with a single int that's at the start of all refcounted struct types, and then all of your refcount manipulation functions are generic. (Mostly these have more than one element, though.)

Hot take: if people say data is oil, agree with them and then point out what they're saying. No server configuration changes, no restarts, no need to involve people with access to those, put the file in and go.

But neither is well supported in a lot of modern web server setups. Today's group bike ride¹ took us from Danforth and Victoria Park up to the park paths of Unionville and then some of old Unionville, both of which were as scenic and lovely as ever (if only they weren't so far away to get to), and then as usual back down Pharmacy at some speed (for me), because I got surprisingly enthused and was apparently willing to put myself through somewhat of a wringer. It was a lovely cool but sunny day for a ride.

¹ https://ridewithgps.com/trips/296505447

Even a VT100 was 'dumb' in the sense that all interaction had to go through your PDP-11 or VAX.

There were (are) definitely smarter and not so smart 'dumb' serial terminals (and I say that as someone who wrote a VT52 emulator because it was simpler than a VT100).

"Canada Post work stoppage", that's nice anodyne language, Bell.

Insert goose meme of "Why is the work stopping? JUST WHY?". It's a STRIKE, by a UNION, which are apparently two words the usual suspects don't want people thinking about.

Unions are good. Go CUPW. Unionize your workplace today, especially you, tech workers.

(Trust me. I'm a tech worker, I'm in the UofT's staff union, and I'm better off for it.)

This is my expression when OpenBSD appears to cheerfully let you get fcntl() POSIX locks on NFS mounted filesystems that are purely local locks, instead of NFS locks that are visible to all NFS clients.

(It appears that NetBSD does the same, but I have less strong feelings about NetBSD doing it than I have about OpenBSD, the theoretical 'we care about correctness and security' OS, which doesn't even have a warning in its fcntl() or flock() manual pages as far as I can see.)

Today I've once again been reminded that different people have all sorts of different views of how they want their shell history to work. I am firmly in the camp of isolated, per-shell history; if I cursor up, I want to reliably get the previous commands I entered in that specific window, the ones I may be able to see right there.

(Am I a sysadmin who works across multiple contexts with interruptions and all sorts of terminal windows and shells on the go at once? Yes, yes I am.)

Sometimes I wonder how long open source can survive and what will come after it. Open source critically relies on the absence of liability for open source programmers, which is under attack from multiple directions. It seems inevitable that increasing amounts of liability will start being imposed on people whether we like it or not, and then releasing software will get much more dangerous.

It's surprisingly difficult to bicycle at 10 km/h and no more, at least on my bike with standard 700c wheels. It generally feels like if I sneeze I'll go clearly over and it's easy to drift into too fast.

(Toronto's Mt. Pleasant cemetery has an official bike speed limit of 10 km/h. One of my personal perverse acts is that when I go through it riding by myself, as I did today, I try to stick to this speed limit. It's absurdly hard to go that slow but oddly fun.)
