I enjoyed my career. But it has become clear to me that #capitalism has not only failed the working class; our seniors and our youth, it is poisoning the planet. A system that, in previous decades, actually did work in some ways: it fostered a middle class, enabled home ownership, provided living-wage jobs; and, had something of a safety net. Had to post this terrible pic of two, really cute baby woodpeckers that are frequenting our little bird sanctuary. We’ve got a birdbath and a couple of feeders under a Maple tree (so semi-protected from Sparrow Hawks). It’s late Spring, so we have lots of babies, nestlings starting to show up. Tit-mouse, Nuthatch, Bluebirds, lots of woodpeckers and the occasional Jay. The baby woodpeckers are too cute, the nestlings hang out together, eat together, and play together - all while making really adorable noises and occasionally touching beaks (kissing imo). #PNW #RuralLife #CountryLife #Oregon #Birds #BirdsOfMastodon #BirdWatching

Also one of my fav vids… I’m bilingual, English and Spanish. It has always struck me the way Spanish speakers deal with accidents, which Boroditsky references. Also in Spanish it is possible and acceptable to say: “It forgot itself to me”. Great construct, that. We’ve all heard about eskimos, indigenous natives of the north having 8-10 words for snow. But I find Boroditsky’s point about how speakers of different languages literally ‘think’ differently about some things and situations much more interesting. I believe the discipline of Linguistic Analysis studies the relationship between language, thought and action.

A storage tank full of an extremely volatile and potentially toxic chemical (MMA) is leaking and could either spill chemicals or explode. What a freaking mess this is, and to date nobody seems to know how to remedy it without significant collateral damage. I think you’d like ‘Dreamers Circus’ - an interesting and eclectic trio. One principal violinist (who is classically trained but plays folk), and two multi-instrumentalists. The keyboard guy plays either piano or accordion. And the third plays violin, bazuki, guitar and nykelharpa. Plus, they have an awesome band name. 💭🎪 They also play with a bunch of collaborators on occasion, like Vasen and the Danish String Quartet. It’s racing through the elementary schools in our region, several closed for too few students attending, and I probably got it from one of my grandkids - who live in our family compound. Take it from me, you DO NOT want to catch this nasty bug - it will kick your butt and is very unpleasant. Went through a whole box of tissues in 24 hours and coughing spasms wracked my lungs. Both Dr. Shames and Michael Garnier are Takilma legends. The article mentions the health center, but not the community built dome school and the time the hippies built a satellite fire station and invited the local FD to use it (which they did). Garnier’s Out-n-About ‘treesort’ is kinda famous, entertaining visitors from all over the world. Took years of battling with the county to get a proper permit. Michael was the ex-officio ‘mayor’ of the hippies in Takilma, and my dear late friend T.A. was vice mayor, and led horseback rides for treesort guests.
