The garden is so generous. Our daughter gets to snack on so many different kinds of fruits. Also, this year I tried to grow okra again (failed last year) and this year they are doing so well. He exercises so much that he has been diagnosed with sports addiction. Whenever he enters a new challenge, I have a conundrum, whether to cheer him on, or to gently remind him that maybe doing a 100 mile race in the alps is not the best way to beat the addiction. I choose the advice for after the race and support before and during. The whole family is there for him, cheering him on and pushing him forward in his endeavors. <br/><br/>Almost two years ago now, I gave birth to our daughter. Me and my husband had talked a lot about what kind of parents we wanted to be, and agreed that spending the first years of her life with her was more important than working and we are privileged enough to take a few years off of work to focus on her. During this same period, we decided to move to a countryside abroad and started renovating an old farm to build us a house. It has been a really tough year, and parenting the way we think is best for our daughter continues to be really demanding. When we are asked by friends and family about how we are doing, we usually say that we are doing well, which is true, we are. But occasionally, we share the experiences of difficult days and I am flabbergasted by the reactions. It mostly comes down to the fact that we chose to do it the hard way and hence we have no right to complain that its hard. <br/><br/>Now, coming to the example of my brother in law, or any sportsperson for that matter, (I use him as a representing figure). So he chooses to work out hours on end for his well being, or in this case despite his well being and yet when he says that he is tired, almost everyone empathizes with him. &#34;Of course you are tired, try to get some rest&#34;, he is told with so much love and care. But when our daughter has had a rough night and we have not slept because we were up all night soothing our baby, we are met with a very judgmental tone and a lot of unsolicited advice on everything we are doing wrong as parents. How is it that his choice to put himself through ordeal for himself trump our choice to go through ordeals for our child? How come we never tell athletes who are suffering that if they would just stop doing sports and just sit on the couch watching television, they would not suffer?I<br/><br/>I am still breastfeeding her, she sleeps with us, she does not go to day care, we speak in our native languages with her and everytime there is a conversation about any developmental milestone where she is a bit behind, we are blamed for it. <br/><br/>We are not going to change ourselves nor our parenting style. We have decided on this path with the best of interest for our little one and no amount of criticism from the &#34; normal&#34; western parenting gurus is going to change that. And this note is also not about whining or playing a martyr. I am just astounded by the double standard of the people around us. In any other field in life, when you share difficulties and shortcomings, we try to calm the., cheer them, uplift them. But a set of new parents who are trying to raise a child to the best of their abilities are met with criticism and snarky comments. How have we evolved as the only mammals who tries to separate an infant from its mother constanly? How have we made a conversation about leaving your kids to be looked after and raised by strangers so light and casual? <br/><br/>I completely understand parents that have to take their kids to day care. I get that not everyone is privileged enough to have the choices that we had. To be honest, weeds had taken over my garlic patch so bad that I had no expectations of any bulb but we did manage to get a decent harvest, and loads of notes for planting garlic in the fall. <br/>The chamomile flowers is for the husband. He has been having sleep issues lately (having a cosleeping toddler does not help), but chamomile tea seems to help. Over the last decades, we slowly saw a shift from these oils towards cheaper alternatives such as sunflower oil and soyabean oil, both marketed as oils good for heart health. I often wonder if money is the only reason we shift away from things that have worked for our health for so long. <br/>We started cooking everything in ghee five six years ago and we are not going back to seed oils. My maternal grandfather&#39;s house was in a remote village, a day walk away from Kathmandu. There was no electricity and no signs of infrastructure at all. I started using tallow as moisturiser during my pregnancy and since then I do not want to use anything else. After months of searching for suet, my neighbour got me a small amount of suet and I finally rendered my very first batch of tallow. Electricity is really cheap and abundant so even now, stepping into mining would be a significant lucrative investment. Instead, the government has put a ban on individuals owning bitcoins. When we build the wall for the deck, seeing the empty space between the house and the wall I had thought to myself that this is an impossible task without some equipments. But my husband kept on bringing the rubbles from all our land and filling it up every chance he got. And look at that, it is finally completely filled. About 25 cubic meters space filled solely by the hard work of my husband. Garlics take a long time to develop so the update on them will follow later. The cauliflowers are not doing great. The larvae of white butterfly got most of the leaves so I am hoping to at least get some seeds for next year.<br/><br/>We will start on sowing some onions the coming days and sort through our seeds. On one hand, having insulation and the dry walls done on the roof means that we have taken a huge step forward but the quality of the work leaves us bit dissatisfied. After consulting three different companies we chose to work with someone who seemed to fit the best with our needs. But maybe it&#39;s the lack of command of Portuguese on our end or the difference in work culture or both, the difference between what we wanted, and what has been delivered is a bit too big for our liking.<br/>The dry walls are not symmetrical in any angles in the corner of the house. The wall in the kitchen side is also not a straight line, rather a curve. The shed where we are living since 6 months has been rendered almost inhabitable because of the rain. We have left some flowers for the pollinators, hopefully these help them in this chilly weather. Husband has been working hard all day trying to fill the deck area with the rubbles. Our daughter took her first steps yesterday and since then she just wants to walk all the time. And our spring water tap is back to it&#39;s full strength now. All in all, it has been a great day. We have been living in a small 10 de meter space for the last half year with our baby daughter. We have no running water, no facilities and every chore has to be done by hand. So survival in itself takes up half a day each day. But slow and steady, we are moving forward.
