hey folks, i could use some DevOps advice on a work-related topic!
tl;dr: anyone have some experiences with Talos or Kairos and/or k3s and k0s to share?

For context, we do a lot of prototyping and deployments on varied platforms (some cloud/web, interactive media on windows on-prem, SBCs/Raspis) without a clear general approach.

I have a project coming up that will involve deploying ~100 SBCs (amd64) that will run a kiosk mode browser and I would like to take the opportunity to implement a deployment architecture here that we can lean on in the future.

Requirements:
- immutable OS partition: soldered eMMC means minimizing writes is imperative
- small (worker) footprint: needs to run decent on 4GB SBCs
- integrates well with other/non-bare-metal deployments (cloud/linux servers, ideally even windows)
- bonus: compatible with a "federated" setup where there's local management nodes (per site and project), but ops data can also be forwarded and aggregated centrally

Anti-Requirements:
- cloud-based / requires Internet: needs to work with interrupted internet connectivity. Prefer sandboxing workers at the network level
- Siloed all-in-one solution with limited interoperability

The compatibility and siloing are my main gripes with Balena: it has features like monitoring and VPN built in which sure that's cool but we already have a (different) VPN, and if I can't integrate my non-balena nodes in the deployment process or your monitoring solution you're not helping.
That's why I've started looking at the Kubernetes-based solutions, it seems that would let me use a Talos or Kairos for SBCs (and maybe bare-metal servers and VMs, too) and mix-and-match that with other Kube infrastructure.

Between Talos and Kairos so far I find Talos the more technically convincing implementation, but Kairos has actually open governance and would make it easier to customize the base image where necessary (e.g. pinctrl driver for one of the SBCs we're using). I also have no idea how I'd go about choosing between k3s or k0s for Kairos and what choosing either would mean for interoperability with eventual other clusters. Help! Does anyone have experience with either they'd be willing to share?

1. have the model run much longer, then have another model read that output and summarize: "reasoning" (aka maximize resource burning)
2. give the AI a traditionally-implemented "count characters in word" tool (address the symptom, aka admit defeat.

Slowly becoming better at this video editing stuff too. I wrote a quick list of shots I'd need, then got everything recorded in maybe 2-3h and edited in another ~3h. It's interesting how easy it is to keep a rhythm with this jump-cut style by just confidently trimming everything to bare minimum length

here's the solution i came up with for the display in the end: just print holes into the flat underside, then snap in loops and skewer it with a MOLLE stick (or can we please call them şiş, like the kebab?). No overhangs and optimal print orientation for strength on both parts :)

did a lot of rapid prototyping between yesterday night and today to turn all the accessories for the FPV camera gadget I built around this time last year into a fully wearable kit / functional cybergoth-y outfit.

this has been a lot of learning and playing around with the MOLLE / PALS webbing system. There's a bunch of different ways things can be designed to go together here and I'm still getting my head around how to design for it but it's quite fun.

The dual 9V battery holder is working great (first time printing ASA as well, seems like an ideal material for these) and although the LED badge holder had a design flaw it turns out just cutting it in half made it perfectly usable and secure 😁

The FPV display is *okay* as it is right now but requires removing the back panel by removing screws (which requires bending the carrier to access), which is very unelegant. I would've liked to use MOLLE sticks here but I didn't find a nice way to get printable loops in the right spot or attach fabric straps without interfering with the internals for now...

todo for tomorrow is making two bases (MOLLE loop and wrist strap) for the new camera gadget design, which now features a sliding dovetail attachment to easily move the electronics between different bases.

Help! I've talked someone into being curious about (fragment) shader-ing ala shadertoy, but I can't find a decent node-based GUI for shader editing that has decent ergonomics but is also close enough to GLSL structurally to allow shadertoy-like mathy exploration.

So far everything I've seen fails in a significant way on either of these:
- Blender: separate "Math" and "Vector Math" nodes. "Math" node with drop-down instead of granular primitives
- Godot: "Function" node with drop-down instead of granular primitives
- Unity: uh ... i just don't want to do this to them i think
- cables.gl: no vector types at all??? setup a bit elaborate
- https://victhorlopez.github.io/editor/ closest so far; polymorphic functions but doesn't auto-cast values; UX a bit underdone

...surely there would be a web tool for this given the popularity of SDFs etc???
