Today in Labor History February 4, 1899: A U.S. sentry shot Filipino soldiers, leading to the Battle of Manila, the first and largest battle of the Philippine-American war. 55 Americans and 238 Filipinos died in the battle. The war, as a whole, was essentially a revolt against the U.S. occupation. After 14 years, the Americans were in control and the Philippines had become a de facto territory of the U.S. Up to 6,000 Americans and 12,000-20,000 Filipinos died in the war. However, as many as 1 million civilians died from famine and disease during the genocidal U.S. occupation. The Manila correspondent for the Philadelphia Ledger wrote in 1901, “Our men have been relentless, have killed to exterminate men, women, children, prisoners and captives, active insurgents and suspected people from lads of ten up.”

Mark Twain wrote the following: “I have read carefully the treaty of Paris and I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines. We have gone there to conquer, not to redeem… And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land.”

Today in Labor History January 10, 1981: The FMLN launched its first major offensive against the Salvadoran military. As a result, they gained control of the departments of Morazan and Chalatenango. They held onto these regions of El Salvador for most of the civil war. In 1989, it became clear after their “final” offensive, that the government could not defeat them. At this point, the U.S., which had previously supported the government’s genocidal war against the Salvadoran people, began to support negotiations. Over 75,000 people died in the war from 1979-1992, plus another 8,000 disappeared. The United Nations estimated that 85% of all civilian killings during the civil war were committed by government forces and government-supported death squads. The government and death squads also routinely committed kidnapping, torture, and murder of suspected FMLN sympathizers. Many of these murderers were trained at the School of the Assassins (School of the Americas) in Fort Benning, Georgia.

He claimed innocence and the evidence against him was flimsy. However, because of his radical associations, they still framed and convicted him. President Wilson, Hellen Keller (also an IWW member) and the Swedish ambassador all asked for clemency. Hill’s final message from prison, before being shot by firing squad, was “Don’t mourn, Organize!” His ashes were sprinkled in every state of the union, except Utah because he didn’t want to be found dead in Utah. They were also sprinkled in Canada, Sweden, Australia and Canada. Some of his most famous songs were “The Preacher and the Slave,” “The Rebel Girl,” “There is Power in a Union,” “Casey Jones, the Union Scab,” and “Mr. Block.” In 1988, an envelope containing his remaining ashes was discovered.

Today in Labor History January 10, 1859: Anarchist educator Francisco Ferrer was born. Ferrer started the first Modern Schools in Spain and inspired hundreds more to be created throughout the world. He opposed the Church’s monopoly over education and created Spain’s first secular, co-educational schools. Not surprisingly, Ferrer was vilified by both the church and the state. In 1906, when anarchist Mateu Morral threw a bomb at the king, the authorities arrested Ferrer and shut down his schools. Morral had worked in the library of one of the Modern Schools, but Ferrer had nothing to do with the assassination attempt. Consequently, he was eventually acquitted. However, they got another chance to arrest him in 1909, when mass protests against Spanish intervention in Morocco grew into a General Strike. The state responded with a week of terror and repression known as “The Tragic Week,” during which they slaughtered over 600 workers. Again, the authorities blamed Ferrer, even though he was nowhere near Barcelona at the time. And this time they succeeded, convicting him of instigating the riot and executing him later that year. While in prison, Ferrer wrote the following on his prison wall: “Let no more gods or exploiters be served. Let us learn rather to love each other.” And when facing the firing squad, he said: “Aim well, boys. I know this is not your fault. Long live the Modern School!”

Today in Labor History January 9, 1905: Russia’s “Bloody Sunday” occurred, with soldiers of the Imperial Guard opening fire on unarmed protesters as they marched toward the Winter Palace. They killed as many as 234 people and injured up to 800. They also arrested nearly 7,300 people. The people were demanding better working conditions and pay, an end to the Russo-Japanese War and universal suffrage. Bolsheviks and Mensheviks opposed the march because it lacked revolutionary demands. The public was so outraged by the massacre that uprisings broke out in Moscow, Warsaw, Riga, Vilna and other parts of the empire. Over 400,000 participated in a General Strike. Protests and uprisings continued for months. The backlash was horrific. The authorities killed 15,000 peasants and sent 45,000 into exile. Another 20,000 were seriously injured. Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony is subtitled “The Year 1905.” Maxim Gorky’s novel, “The Life of a Useless Man,” depicts Bloody Sunday.

Today in Labor History January 9, 1905: French anarchist Louise Michel died. Michel was a leader in the Paris Commune and cofounder of the Women’s Battalion. She also cofounded the journal “Le Libertaire,” with Sebastien Faure. 100,000 mourners attended her funeral. Before the Commune, she was a school teacher. After the Commune, while in prison, she wrote children’s books.

During the Commune, workers took over all aspects of economic and political life. They enacted a system that included self-policing, separation of the church and state, abolition of child labor, and employee takeovers of abandoned businesses. Churches and church-run schools were shut down. The Commune lasted from March 18 through May 28, 1871. Michel was elected head of the Montmartre Women’s Vigilance Committee. She also participated in the armed struggle against the French government.

Ultimately, the French Army quashed the commune, slaughtering up to 20,000 men, women and children. The authorities forced Michel to turn herself in by threatening to kill her mother. When asked if she had anything to say in her defense, she replied: “Since it seems that any heart which beats for freedom has the right only to a lump of lead, I too claim my share. If you let me live, I shall never stop crying for revenge and l shall avenge my brothers. I have finished. If you are not cowards, kill me!”

They deported her to New Caldonia, where she lived for the next seven years, working as a teacher for the children of both the French colonists and the indigenous Kanak people. Her ongoing struggle against French colonialism and her support for the Kanak people, including participation in their 1878 revolt against the French colonialists, is remembered today in their local museum of anarchism.

He was an internationally renowned Czech novelist, short-story writer, playwright and essayist. Two of his best-known works include “R.U.R” (Rossum’s Universal Robots), which first introduced the word “robot,” to the English language. He derived the word “Robot” from the Czech word for forced labor by Serfs. The play is an archetype for many of the science fiction stories and films that followed, like Bladerunner, West World and Terminator, and others about robots, replicants and hosts that rebel against humans. However, “R.U.R.,” like Čapek’s 1936 novel “War with the Newts,” is also a satirical critique of totalitarianism, which was already on the rise in Europe at the time he wrote the play.

Today in Labor History January 8, 1892: 500-600 anarchist peasants led a revolt in Andalusia, taking over the town of Jerez and demanding the release of prisoners and economic relief. The authorities quickly quashed the uprising, killing three. They captured and tortured the leaders, executing four of them on February 10. They sentenced another 14 to life imprisonment. The Cadiz labor movement had to go underground because the general repression was so severe. But the Cadiz anarchist movement continued, culminating with the 1933 uprising at Casas Viejas, and subsequent massacre by soldiers. The press condemned the government’s response. Protests erupted in many parts of Spain and other parts of Europe. Activists clashed with police at Spanish consulates throughout Europe. Anarchists set off numerous bombs in retaliation. Anarchist Paulí Pallàs tried to assassinate Catalonia Captain General Arsenio Martínez Campos for his role in the Jerez uprising's repression and executions. Pallas was executed for this. Jerome Mintz wrote about this history in his classic, “The Anarchists of Casas Viejas,” (1982).

Today in Labor History January 8, 1877: Crazy Horse and his warriors fought their final battle against the U.S. Cavalry at Wolf Mountain, Montana Territory. Just six months earlier, Crazy Horse and Chief Gall had led Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors in the routing of Custer and the 7th Cavalry in the Battle of Little Bighorn. Many bands of Sioux and Cheyenne had returned to the reservations to get food and supplies in preparation for winter. However, Congress had demanded that they cede the Black Hills in exchange for these goods, and they replaced the civilian contractors in charge of these supplies with army soldiers. This convinced many people to avoid the reservations and mistrust the U.S. government even more than they already did. Then, in December, U.S. troops defeated Sitting Bull’s band, as well as Dull Knife's Cheyennes, who had trekked through snow to join Crazy Horse. Considering their weakened condition and the approaching winter, Crazy Horse tried to negotiate peace with the army. The army responded by murdering Crazy Horse's delegation. Consequently, they continued fighting. The final battle occurred on January 8, 1877. While only 3 people died on each side and the battle was essentially a draw, the U.S. treated it as a strategic victory in light of their recent humiliation at Little Big Horn, and because it showed they could avoid defeat under harsh winter conditions.

Today in Labor History January 8, 1811: Charles Deslondes led an unsuccessful slave revolt on the east bank of the Mississippi River near present day New Orleans. Around 125 enslaved men marched from sugarcane plantations on the German Coast toward New Orleans, collecting more men along the way. Up to 500 people participated in total, making it the largest slave revolt in U.S. history. On their march, they burned five plantation houses, several sugarhouses, and crops, and they killed two white men. Most were armed with hand tools. However, 95 black people died in confrontations with the militia or by execution in the aftermath. Whites decapitated many of the executed men and displayed their heads on pikes to intimidate other slaves.

Today in Labor History January 7, 1939: The authorities finally freed Tom Mooney, a labor activist who they wrongly convicted of murder in the San Francisco Preparedness Day bombing in July 1916, along with fellow labor organizer Warren Billings. They had been convicted based on the false testimony of Martin Swanson, a detective with a long history of interfering in San Francisco strikes. On this day in 1939, the governor granted Mooney an unconditional pardon after 22.5 years of incarceration. As a result of the bombing, 10 people died and 40 were injured. Not surprisingly, only anarchists were suspected in the bombing. A few days after the bombing, they searched and seized materials from the offices of “The Blast,” Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman’s local paper. Mooney and Billings were also members of the IWW.

Today in Labor History January 7, 1979: Vietnamese troops conquered Phnom Penh, Cambodia and drove out Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. 18,000-25,000 Vietnamese died in their war with Cambodia. Well over 50,000 Cambodians died in the conflict. 200,000 Cambodian civilians also died, not counting those who starved to death. However, under Pol Pot’s genocidal rule, 1.5-2 million civilians were killed or died of starvation. This amounts to 25% of the country’s entire population at the time.

Today in Labor History January 7, 1920: Jewish anarchist Albert Meltzer was born in London. He became an anarchist at age fifteen through the boxing lessons he took with Billy Campbell, a seaman, boxer and anarchist. During the Spanish Civil War, Meltzer smuggled arms from Hamburg to the CNT in Spain. Meltzer was a co-founder of the anarchist newspaper Black Flag and wrote several books, including “Anarchism, Arguments For and Against,” “The Floodgates of Anarchy,” and his autobiography, “I Couldn't Paint Golden Angels,” published by AK Press.” He was also was involved in the founding of the Anarchist Black Cross prisoner support movement. In the early 1980s, he joined the anarcho-syndicalist Direct Action Movement.

Today in Labor History January 7, 1919: Argentina’s "Bloody Week" (AKA Tragic Week) began in Buenos Aires. Workers were demonstrating for the 8-hour work day. The authorities opened fire, killing four and wounding 30. Clashes with the authorities on the day of the funerals left another 50 dead. In response, they called for a General Strike. Paramilitary groups attacked workers in collaboration with the police. By January 16 the authorities had fully crushed the strike, killing as many as 1,500 and wounding 2,000. Many of the victims were Jewish-Russian, Italian, Spanish and Chilean anarchist immigrants targeted by racists and anti-Bolshevik hysteria. Many were executed without trial after surrendering. The typical workday was 12 hours. However, many workers were forced to toil for up to 16 hours per day.

Roughly 4,000 American men and women fought for the Republicans in violation of U.S. law. Nearly 2,000 of them died of wounds or disease. One of the casualties was Oliver Law, a communist, and the first black man known to have commanded white U.S. troops. He led the Tom Mooney Machine-Gun Company, named for labor organizer Tom Mooney, who spent years in prison on trumped up charges related to the San Francisco Preparedness Day bombing.

Sandburg died on July 22, 1967.

Actually one of several species knows as Destroying Angels due to the toxicity and resemblance to many edible species. Today in Labor History January 5, 1968: Reformist Alexander Dubček came to power in Czechoslovakia, marking the beginning of the "Prague Spring." During the Prague Spring, Dubček loosened restrictions on the media, speech and travel. He also created a dual federation within the country made up of the Czech Socialist Republic and Slovak Socialist Republic. However, this was insufficient to mollify activists, who became increasingly defiant of the government. They began to occupy workplaces and formed mutual aid networks. When the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact members invaded the country with tanks and 650,000 soldiers, activists fought them with rocks, Molotov cocktails and homemade weapons. The Soviet military predicted they would subdue the country in four days, but the resistance held out for eight months. When they finally quashed the uprising, the Soviets continued to control Czechoslovakia until 1989, when the Velvet Revolution finally ended the Communist regime.

Part of the post-WWI Revolution occurring throughout Germany, the Spartacist uprising was essentially a power struggle between the Spartacists and other Council Communists (left-wing, anti-authoritarian communists) against the Social Democrats. 500,000 workers participated in the General Strike they called for January 7 to replace the moderate Social Democratic government with a communist one. Many of the workers obtained arms. They tried, but failed, to get the support of the Navy, which remained neutral in the conflict. However, the Social Democrats got the anti-Communist Freikorps paramilitary to fight for their side. The Freikorps had weapons and military equipment leftover from WWI and were able to quash the uprising within a week. The Freikorps was comprised of WWI vets, many of whom were suffering from PTSD. Many went on to became Nazis. Up to 200 people died in the fighting, including 17 Freikorps soldiers. The Social Democrats captured, beat and executed Liebknecht and Luxemburg.

Today in Labor History January 5, 1869: Isaac Meyers and Frederick Douglass organized the First U.S. National Colored Convention. At the convention, they created the Colored National Labor Union. At the time, white unions routinely refused to accept African American members or to show solidarity with black workers. Additionally, employers often hired black scabs during strikes by white unions, while the KKK often recruited within white unions, exacerbating mistrust. Over time, the union became more and more political (much like most modern unions), until it became a de facto branch of the Republican Party (which in those days was known as the party of abolition).
