The dynamic blog option.

Self host Wordpress or similar on a cheap or free web host and use the Wordpress app or similar on my phone. I hate Wordpress, it's very good, it does the job well, it's mature, but it's also a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Each of these posts are trivially sized and almost like a ledger of my morning puzzle scores. I like writing but it seems silly to spend time turning what, emojis aside, is txt into html served by PHP connected to a database. Which is essentially what a CMS-alike is. There are some other, big database free options, in the form of clients but I really don't feel comfortable enough, beyond following instructions, with node.js and the like.

Minute Cryptic - 20 January, 2026 (yeah. Gosh I'm inflamed, with spondyloarthritis, which I think is chance exacerbated by being sedentary yesterday. Itcs not a good condition for hard physical labour but it's a worse condition for no physical labour and the worst think is the body is telling the mind not to do it. So one has to ignore that and do a bit even if it's not much. Preferably more than a bit. Ideas include attempting to do the Riverdance dance, cleaning out the cable draw, kicking a football in a field by myself, buying 14 value tins of baked beans at Sainsbury's and carrying them home in a bag for life, carrying big books, looking for things that don't exist, taking picture of Victorian and somewhat later postboxes, a lunchtime trip to the library, painting a picture, or dogging which I don't want to do because I haven't got a metal detector and it would exacerbate my back.)

Minute Cryptic - 19 January, 2026 (At least this wasn't taxing. A good surface to the clue. As an adult the principle problem with burning the candle at both ends is a greatly reduced chance of having adequate time to sleep it off. Today I have planned ahead for breakfast. Specifically 3 hours before breakfast when I put 20gm of raisins and a teaspoon of cocoa powder at the bottom of a bowl and topped it with 80gm of frozen redcurrants/blackcurrants/raspberries and sprinkled it with another teaspoon of cocoa. Minute Cryptic - 16 January, 2026 (The surface of this clue is very The Telegraph or other newspaper. The Telegraph's is generally one of the less wanky cryptic crosswords. Minute Cryptic - 14 January, 2026 ( I'm getting uptight about these which is slowing me. I think this is a good intro clue for beginners in that it introduces many of the key elements of cryptic crossword clues. Minute Cryptic - 11 January, 2026 (took me longer than it should've. I ended up eating the Surf and Turf burger from McDonald's Secret Menu promotion. It was OK. The fish used was pollock which can be good but was processed in such a way that it didn't taste particularly fishy. I've cooked pollock in past , several times in fish creole and as 'seasoned fish', and it doesn't have to taste that much like a child's fish finger, or 'fish sticks' as they're known in America and popularized as a term by Kanye. in the shape of a square. Maybe it'd be good with something like tartare sauce as a kind of crispy enabler. I accidentally put over a tablespoon of Carolina Reaper sauce on my main meal and had three involuntary hiccups. No vasodilation. When I've gone full on with the chilli the hiccups//cold sweats/mental challenge goes on all meal but I haven't done that for a while. In my experience it only seems to be deleterious from about day 4.)

Minute Cryptic - 10 January, 2026 (this clue took me too long to get because I had the answer fairly early on but didn't perceive it. Also not helped by wanting breakfast. I've currently run out of frozen fruit so today I'm going to have 40gm of All Bran with 100gm Turkish style strained yoghurt, 20gm of raisins and a teaspoon of cocoa powder, with a large mug of tea. Dinner is going to be a basic vegan chana curry which I made with Trinidadian Chief Brand Curry Powder/roasted ground cumin (the Trinidad roast cumin is unique)/green sauce (similarly - a bottle from relatives), with a couple of wholemeal roti. I am mostly vegan, which would be more accurately described as mostly vegetarian. It's partly about the morality of the mass consumption of meat and its environmental effects and partly because I think a diet that has lots of vegetables and fibre is a good thing on account of no longer finding constipation, that, funny from about my mid 30s. Constipation is still a bit funny. Especially if it's not me that is constipated. For lunch I am going to have a McDonald's Double Cheeseburger.)

Minute Cryptic - 6 January, 2026 (I got it but I didn't enjoy it. It's a good clue but, for me at least, and to some it would be a compliment, was not dissimilar to a clue in a The Guardian or The Telegraph cryptic crossword minus all the guff referencing Guardian-y or Telegraph-y things. In that there was a huge search space and a narrow path through. Not dissimilar to Christian's Journey through the valley of death in The Pilgrim's Progress, getting more Telegraph-y, or a reference to Icarus via Joyce's Daedalus and avoiding stout and sunlight. Which could be Guardian-y or Telegraph-y depending on the emphasis on myth, modernism, Irish complexions or managing to sell people stout by convincing them it's good - the ultimate proof the Irish are among the smartest in the world and undoubtedly a bit magic.)

So, the inevitable diet approaches, and the worst problems were melomakarona, a kind of Greek ground walnut spiced honey baked concoction, which are utterly delicious but, and I worked this out, work out about 300 calories per bar which is about 4 or 5cm by 3cm, it turns out walnuts are very good for a person and very calorific, I've got about half a kilo of them left; stollen which is basically baked bread, enriched with butter, fruit, marzipan through the middle, with some kind of spirit over the top, dusted with icing sugar, a whole stollen left; milk chocolate ginger cakes, which I finished; orange and salted caramel dark chocolate, 2/3rds of a bar remaining; butter stollen bites, uneaten - I'll get there by late January; pepparkakor basically ginger biscuits. And I'll mostly be eating left over savory food for a week or two. I broke it up last night with a fairly insipid M&S beef vindaloo, Christmas voucher, which needed far more chilli and spice. It was at most medium spiced on an Indian scale. This is, in historical terms, not a bad situation to be in and I'm not complaining. So far I have put on a kilogram in weight. I walked upwards of 10km yesterday but basically I'm going to have to eat sensibly again from January onwards. New years resolutions are bollocks.)

If a person drew a kind of taxonomy of the basic units of understanding there are a lot of vertices and a lot of edges that double back (excluding the basics of the written language and it's register). It only appears like a flow chart retrospectively. It's the kind of one that is difficult for AIs without checking the answers with the source of the puzzle. Interestingly the AI that got it straight away did the equivalent on using a search engine. 3/4 I tested got it wrong. I didn't use an AI, or search engine, but this kind of clue is an interesting test, ruined somewhat by LLM being able to scoop up search engine results and present them as their own. The best time to try it would be just as Minute Cryptic is released, although the LLM owners could cheat. This. To me it felt like a sci fi golden age plot wrapped in enough classical knowledge to make it approachable for people who are, often, snobby about sci fi. I'm sure that wasn't the author's intention. A good book but I'm not sure about great. Because I've been somewhat busy I have read quick reads recently like Jesus Christ Kinski by Benjamin Myers, Brat by Gabriel Smith and Strange Houses by Uketsu. In descending order of enjoyment. The ones I didn't enjoy aren't mentioned.

Anyway, I read Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke, and that’s the world in which the titular character finds himself.

Notably, Clarke has only written two novels in her career, they were 16 years apart (“Jonathan Srange and Mr Norrell” in 2004 and “Piranesi” in 2020), and both were award-winning massive bestsellers, beloved by critics and readers alike.

Piranesi lives in a realm of infinite rooms and staircases, inhabited by birds and fish and shined on by the sun and moon and stars, and in which seawaters routinely rise and fall. He has a rather meager existence as he lives off fish and seaweed and catalogues the various rooms, and he is grateful that the world is generous enough to provide for him. For the most part he’s the only person around, except occasionally he runs into one more guy he calls “The Other.” He also knows of 15 human skeletons that he has names for.

Clarke did plenty of historical research and makes a lot of allusions in the work. It’s rather literary, and the whole thing is quite a surrealist artsy story and it’s much loved by people who enjoy sophisticated things.

I am, perhaps, not very sophisticated.

To me this felt like the kind of book I’d be assigned to read in high school. It was rather dry and boring to my unsophisticated palate, though short enough to breeze through in several sittings. I predicted most of the mystery in advance, and as things happened I’d be like, “alright.” When something occasionally did surprise me, it was always mildly to the downside. Like someone tells you lunch will be a mystery, and then come lunchtime it’s revealed to be a sandwich.

I know a lot of people who rave about this book, so it’s been on my to-read list for a while, and now I have that good feeling of finished homework. When people talk about Piranesi I can be like, “Ah, yes, Piranesi. Fine literature, that is.”

Computers, and computing in general are very useful boosters of human productivity and ways to spread knowledge in all forms. But the training data is, seemingly deliberately, often opaque, which is unfair because copyrighted material, including FOSS licensed material,, are sucked in as training data and laundered. At a minimum it's the equivalent of a person borrowong images or text from somewhere and changing it enough that they can claim it as their own. Which is impolite, bad form, and doesn't reward people for making and sharing because the reward is useable or useful things they can use and be attributed to. Furthermore in India and other places various companies are trialling bundling relatively premium AI subscriptions, cheaply, with phone contracts. That is not altruism. It's the standard playbook of offering it cheap now and being forced, by market and stakeholder financial pressure, to squeeze increasing monetisation from it later and the training data gathered from the inputted work of hundreds of millions of young Indians. There is a cognitive balance between reading and doing and the "forgetting curve" is a real thing. For lazy people and those who haven't learnt to learn it's going to make them dumber and for those who have learnt to learn it's going to make them smarter. Good questions are a skill. Added to the fact that, following the form of all other microelectronics from the 1960s onwards, the underlying technology will obsolete itself every few years making ROI calculations, let alone productivity and profitabity claims very, very, difficult to predict and dubious. And one of the early waves of attack on Bitcoin was the power consumption. The power required to produce AI slop videos alone will shit on that. Minute Cryptic - 1 November, 2025 (I was dreading this one because I am in acute pain and as a final insult a little bit of a cold, luckily the clue wasn't the kind I find difficult. I don't consider this much pain debilitating but it clearly is a bit because every idea for what write is punctuated by it. At the same time while I'm not enthusiastic about it I'm not depressed by it either. The pain is like an annoying younger brother. It's a literal pain in the arse, in this case and ribs, neck, and breathing, AxSpA, but is unlikely to kill a person immediately and some degree of humour can be derived from it. I am also yet to stand up, which initially will resemble Wilfred Bramble's Albert Steptoe with a bad back, but will, hopefully, be OK by lunchtime. It responds well to movement. In fact movement is essential. It is tiring though, but not in an especially bad way, in some ways it's the kind of tiredness that is quite relaxing and aids reading. The cold doesn't feel like COVID and is just a little bit of a sore throat and feeling a bit under the weather. I've never understood sadomasochism‡. I understand masochism because nothing would get done.)

I voted, at lunchtime, in a local electon, which is essentially local government and applies just to a single 'ward' which is a small part of a town. The St John's Ward of Tunbridge Wells has a population of about 7.5k, in a town with a population of about 55k, in a borough, a larger geographic area, with a population of about 115k. In this small ward 4159 People are registered to vote. Which - doing some back of the envelope maths - is most of the adult population. 28.4% of eligible voters voted. The three to watch, in my opinion, were The Liberal Democrats, The Green Party, and, the relatively new party which is associated with the flags on lamposts, not so much the Bhutan and Welsh ones, Reform. Labour didn't stand in this ward. It's a solidly Lib Dem ward and I think they submitted their papers late or made a clerical error. The Lib Dems got 53%, Reform 15% and the Green Party 14%. I voted Lib Dem. Not because I particularly agree with them but tactically because my experience of dealing with immigrants and refugees have been largely positive and maybe that's a privileged position inasmuch as I'm not dealing with people smugglers, next to a hotel or house with large numbers of men who are unable to work, with very little cash, because, almost by design or dysfunction it takes a great deal of time to process their claims. The overwhelming majority of immigrants are here legally and my experiences of them, and the few I've met who have claimed asylum, have been totally positive. From the young Indian doctors helping to deal with my, moribund, dad, to the man running the store in the latterly decaying former chemists, to the nice lady in the charity shop, and relatives. That's not to say I think any large group of people are any better than any other large group of people. There's almost definitely going to be bad people and clusters of them among any suffiently large group of people. I have no blinkers and know people. So I thought Reform, with the immigration Leitmotif, we're going to increase their vote but actually it went down. They are clearly better organised - there was a nice older lady from Reform outside the vote collecting voter numbers, which the Lib Dems were doing too, to see who turned up. The turnout was low. Last general election, where an MP was elected, in Tunbridge Wells overalll turnout was 69% and in this ward, if I remember correctly, about 76%. I don't think this is at all indicative of national trends and I thought it would be. I like the Greens but it's a bit Nigel Thunberg.)
