I am not talking about a trial membership either. I mean to say you dialed up a local access number without any username or password, and you were simply online with access to the early Internet.

They gave away the Internet like a drug. They wanted to see if people would use it, and they wanted people hooked. AI is starting much in the same way. And you are right. We are at that phase where they are throwing whatever they can up against the wall and seeing what sticks.

But there is one thing I know. AI is here, and it isn't going away. Unfortunately, bad faith actors will use AI to flood social media, forums, and other communications, and it will take AI to fight it.

I would hope an open-source AI could focus on optimization. Corporations are throwing money at AI, and optimization is on the back burner. And it would be wise to pull together.

stux⚡️ (npub1s20…twmm)

Humanity wants AI.

Crazy, right? The vocal minority are just that. We are a very vocal — I would say extremely vocal — but still a minority group.

Those AI websites and apps are gaining users, not losing them.

People have been wanting AI and dreaming of a future with AI since the first computers were invented. Our dream of an AI future has been embedded in books, movies, TV shows, and more. In fact, when faced with the reality of today's AI, most people are disappointed that it is not developing faster and is not yet as advanced as they want it to be.

That said, the usage of AI is growing, not diminishing. I would compare the adoption of AI to the adoption of the Internet. There was a vocal group who hated that too.

And I agree, and I believe even the people who want AI agree, that AI should not be bundled into everything, everywhere. Corporate America, unfortunately, still disagrees on that front.

But to fight AI, you need AI.

stux⚡️ (npub1s20…twmm)

AI is not going anywhere. I know many people do not like AI, and I certainly do not like where it is heading right now.

We have two choices. We can cry about it, or we can help shape it.

I would much rather see more open-source AIs than the current corporate model and where they are trying to take it. We need community-driven technology instead of letting a few big companies control the entire future.

Ignoring technological shifts rarely works. By engaging with AI and pushing for open development, we actually stand a chance of influencing our own future.

Sharkey is generally no longer actively maintained. Much like IceShrimp, which shifted its focus from IceShrimp-js to IceShrimp.net, Sharkey is effectively in "maintenance mode only." This means it still receives critical security updates and required patches, but it generally no longer tracks upstream Misskey development.

Sharkey's latest release: 2025.4.7

Misskey's latest release: 2026.9.0

I had to laugh when, back on January 13, 2026, they titled a release "2025.4.5 — We'll catch up, we promise." The release right before that had been 6 months earlier. In all the time since, they've only pushed out 2 security updates (2025.4.6 and 2025.4.7). They are now well over a year behind Misskey's development.

If anyone has the time and skills, I hope someone builds a script to migrate Sharkey sites back to Misskey. Since Sharkey is a fork of Misskey (as was FireFish), it should be possible and is a smart precaution.

#Sharkey #Misskey #FireFish #OpenSource #Fediverse #ActivityPub

Just sent 61 messages to admins running very outdated copies of either Mastodon or Misskey.

No one should be using, for example, Mastodon 3.x. There is a vulnerability that allows someone to obtain limited access to the owner account.

A few people were using 4.2.x, which is so old and discontinued that the final release at the time suggested upgrading to 4.3.x — which is also now discontinued and has several known security vulnerabilities.

If you're using Mastodon 4.4.0, as legacy, know that 4.4.24 already recommends you upgrade to at minimum 4.6. or newer, The current release is 4.7.1.

No one is saying you need to always run the bleeding-edge release. But if you're going to host other people, you should attempt to keep your site relatively current. The older the site, the harder it can be to upgrade, so not falling too far behind is good planning. If you cannot do that, you really should consider joining someone else's site as opposed to running your own.

#FediAdmin #MastoAdmin

I've been trying to avoid needing a larger hard drive, but I think I am failing in that regard.

The problem is, most large capacity drives, while still being reasonably priced at the moment, are still mechanical drives. SSD drives (particularly SATA) still balloon in price if you're looking for something over 2 TB.

I'm someone who has a list of things he doesn't like paying much for, and hard drives are one of those things. lol

I found it a lot easier to manage (flake-less). Additionally, I did not want to lock any versions, and wanted to continue to receive regular updates.

However, with automatic updates enabled, things would fail silently in the background. And that meant noticing over time that NixOS was not generating new snapshots (because the update had silently failed). And the reason I kept failing was because NixOS kept changing phrases in their coding language.

#NixOS #Linux

      * sigh *

I need VirtualBox because for some classic gaming, virt-manager was not the best option for Windows XP or Windows Vista. It worked fair with Windows 7, but even when I finally could get the audio and network working, the display was lacking any reasonable hardware acceleration.

VirtualBox just works, and I don't want a debug or tweak another random setting, I just want things to work — and I mean now.

The problem is, I really wanted to use an immutable distro, because I love the idea of my daily driver being safe and secure. And while I used to be able to run VirtualBox on Fedora Kinoite (Silverblue but with KDE), it seems things have e changed.

That brings me back to NixOS, which I have gotten really good at using — while wanting to throw it out the window. Because when you become really good with NixOS, you learn that they change things constantly just for the sake of changing things. And that becomes super annoying really quick.

At some point, you're just asking for trouble, and you're better off not following the upstream, of someone else's upstream, who is relying upon someone else or more.

The phrase there are too many cooks in the kitchen, applies. And truth be told, an operating system starts with many cooks to begin with. Recooking someone's leftovers, of someone else's leftovers, and possibly someone else's before that, or more, just makes a very messy kitchen, and often not quality food. It's often better to start your own dish. And while it's perfectly fine to be inspired by somebody else's. Burnt leftovers are still burnt leftovers, no matter how you dress it.

I often recommend people avoid overly forked operating systems that rely on upstream.

It's not that I am against forking — rather, what is all too common is that a development ends up with far too many middlemen and a compounded supply chain. And we are talking about an operating system, which likely already has a lot of middlemen and an extensive dependency chain.

This is why I often recommend Linux distributions that are original and independent, for example, Fedora or NixOS. These are not forks — these are what others use to make forks. Debian is another example. To make Ubuntu, they fork Debian and build up from there.

But Ubuntu may encounter issues inherent within Debian, or it may introduce its own mistakes, or a combination of the two. It's a good OS, but that is the reality. Then along comes someone who decides to fork Ubuntu. Now you've got to worry about Debian, Ubuntu, their fork, and any combination of those three, plus their own issues.

1 of 2

You will find no news reports about this.

Cloudflare is offline because the United States government is adding their own little spin into Cloudflare. The great firewall of the United States Government is soon at hand.

Later today, Cloudflare will release a statement. It will say that there were network migration issues and other general issues. That their entire infrastructure was somehow affected. Do not believe it.

I warned everybody about this almost a year ago. I've been trying to find an alternative. I know of no alternative to Cloudflare.

#Cloudflare #CDN #DomainProxy #DigitalSovereignty

It's that they broke their own rules to target me. Online harassment should be discouraged, and yet the post to harass me was trending on Mastodon.social.

The other issue is Mastodon have become Elon Musk. It's one thing if you don't like what I say, and you block me. That's fine. I can live with that. I block people too sometimes. I'm perfectly okay with people blocking me. But it's another thing if you decide to prevent 20,000 people seeing somebody that you personally don't like, who is not sharing hate speech, spam, misinformation, or anything that would legitimately warrant such an action. That makes them no better than Elon Musk on Twitter.

That means refusing to use it and choosing something else. But people are no longer willing to sacrifice for their convictions.

#AI #ArtificialIntelligence
