This is the first thing I cast from the slip and bisqued at ^04 and the color is excellent. That is e.g. a kilogram of dry plaster wants 700 grams of water. Similarly a basic recipe for refractory molds for glass casting is half dry pottery plaster and half silica flour with a dry ingredient to water ratio of 3 to 2.<br/><br/>The problem lies in predicting the volume of liquid plaster produced from a given amount of water and dry plaster. There&#39;s a lot of miscibility going on and it&#39;s not even close to the sum of the volumes. Andrew Martin* has a recipe that gives one quart of wet plaster and using the ratio it&#39;s easy enough to scale it up or down as needed. But there&#39;s no such recipe for the glass casting mix, and anyway using a recipe bothers me to some extent. What I&#39;m looking for is a direct way from &#34;I need x milliliters of wet mix so I should use y milliliters of water&#34; and then use the ratio to calculate the amount of powder.<br/><br/>So what occurs to me is this: barring technical and irrelevant details like elevation about sea level and air temperature the specific gravity (= weight in grams of one CC) of each of these two mixes ought to be constant. Suppose way pottery plaster has a specific gravity d. Then if I need e.g. v cubic centimeters of mix I know I need vd grams of mix. If w is the amount of water I need and p is the amount of plaster, both in grams, then we should have:<br/><br/>w+p=vd<br/>7p=10w<br/><br/>So 0.7p=w and therefore p=vd/1.7 and w=0.7vd/1.7.We can do something analogous with the plaster/silica recipe. A formula like this would be much easier to work with since d is constant so I could get the amounts directly with just two calculations.<br/><br/>My question is: will this work? I&#39;m worried a little about the assumption that the weight of the wet mix is the sum of the weights of the ingredients. There&#39;s some kind of chemical reaction happening with the water and the plaster and it wouldn&#39;t be all that strange if some weight was gained or released at that stage e.g. if some atoms are related or absorbed. It&#39;s illegal in the sense that it was never registered with the Oakland rental board. His original landlords sold the property to a flipper a few months ago and they&#39;ve been trying to get my friend to move out.<br/><br/>They started by offering him cash for keys a few months ago, but two different lawyers advised him not to take the deal because it came with onerous conditions (that I can&#39;t remember right now) so he didn&#39;t take it. Then they progressed to yelling at him and calling him names.<br/><br/>A couple weeks ago they escalated to smashing out his car windows and a few of the apartment windows. They also spraypainted the word &#34;PEDO&#34; on an exterior wall. The cops, doing their job by protecting the landlord, refused to do anything because there&#39;s putatively no proof that the landlord had it done. They also told him to remove his personal belongings from the bathroom and the kitchen because they were going to start demolition, they said.<br/><br/>Then last night they escalated again. At around 2 am he was working at the computer when someone smashed both the windows near his desk and sprayed pepper spray through the holes. They also smashed out all his car windows again, sprayed his front door with pepper spray, and painted &#34;PEDO&#34; on the side of his car. S again the cops, who were apparently personally sympathetic, still said they couldn&#39;t do anything. One of the cops advised him to file a civil suit pro se.<br/><br/>He&#39;s physically unharmed and is talking to lawyers and doesn&#39;t feel like giving in yet, but of course he&#39;s worried, especially given last year&#39;s murder of a tenant by a landlord who wanted the property vacant to increase the sale value. This novel, though, is absolutely unique even compared to Hughes&#39;s three others. It&#39;s more like a vision than anything planned out consciously. Wuthering Heights is the only other novel I know that feels like that, although (of course) they&#39;re nothing alike. Mathematics, I argue, provided the logical infrastructure for the return to order. This episode, then, shows how and why mathematical concepts and methods are anything but timeless or neutral; they define what “reason” is, and what it is not, and thus the concrete possibilities of political action.
