Canada's inflation rate rose to 3.2% in May. What's behind the surge? Oil prices. That's it. From the Bank's detailed analysis (their "MPR") this morning, they estimate that the U.S. trade policy changes (up to Oct 22) will make Canada's economy ~1.5% smaller than it would otherwise be. Calgary's inflation rate in April was the highest in the country, at 3.6% compared to the Canada-wide rate of 2.7%. A 0.9 point gap.

I estimate that most (0.5 points) of this gap is accounted for by faster rent increases in the city.

Today's jobs report for Alberta gives example of how rising unemployment isn't necessarily a bad thing. Unemp rate rose +0.7 (!) but was *entirely* due to an increase in labour force participation (a good thing!). Employment rose (and kept pace with population growth). #ableg
