They will cite a highly cited paper because everyone else does. I have a paper in Nature Communications that is like that. Need a paper that says there were ice sheets in the northern hemisphere? My paper is a go-to choice for that.<br/><br/>- People are more likely to cite a paper with coauthors from a variety of institutes, because they are more likely to familiar with at least one author. I was the sole author on this paper and I assume this is part of the reason it has not got eyes on it. This was actually part of my publishing experiment!<br/><br/>- Going from that point, people are more likely to cite (and probably read) papers from people they personally know. Networking matters! I&#39;m not going to the conferences in Europe anymore while I have been a precariously employed person in Japan. When Twitter was popular this was not as important, but relatively fewer people are here or on Bluesky.<br/><br/>- We all hate the influence that the Natures and Sciences have, but let&#39;s face it, more people are likely to notice a paper in those families of journals than a regional journal from a geological survey. In Scotland, the mid-Holocene relative sea level fits a lot better with a more extensive West Antarctic Ice sheet.
