1. We cannot outsource sovereignty.

Not our money. Not our keys. Not our communications. Not our food, energy, housing, knowledge, or ability to repair things.

The recent Bitcoin failures sharpen this lesson: trustlessness is not a slogan. It has to survive contact with real software, real humans, real adversaries, and real mistakes.

2. Nobody gets to be the infallible priesthood.

Bitcoin Core, Knots, developers, hardware manufacturers, miners, protocol activists, cypherpunks—every faction has blind spots.

Instead of trying to pick the correct faction, let's build systems where factions can disagree without destroying the commons.

3. Red-teaming is an act of love.

The person who finds the catastrophic bug isn't necessarily the enemy. Sometimes they're the person who cared enough to look.

We are learning to distinguish between accountability and vengeance.

We can say:

" You fucked up. This matters. Fix it.'

without saying:

" You are irredeemable."

That distinction is important.

4. Decentralization means accepting inconvenience.

A resilient system is rarely as convenient as a centralized one.

Running your own node, generating your own entropy, maintaining physical infrastructure, learning how things actually work, keeping redundant systems—these are forms of participation, not merely technical hobbies.

5. We need the people we disagree with.

The temptation is to divide the world into:

us → people who understand
them → people who are dangerous

The First Turning says: pull up another chair.

Not every position is correct, but civilization becomes more resilient when disagreement happens at the table rather than away from it.

6. Technology needs an ecology around it.

A Bitcoin node sitting in a datacenter is one thing.

A Bitcoin miner heating a house, producing hot water, supporting a greenhouse, and consuming otherwise-wasted energy is something else.

Likewise, a communications protocol becomes more interesting when it exists alongside radios, local mesh networks, physical communities, agriculture, energy production, and human relationships.

We're learning to think in systems rather than products.

7. We are rediscovering the value of craftsmanship.

Know how the thing works.

Know how to fix it.

Know what happens when the Internet disappears.

Know how to make heat.

Know how to store food.

Know how to generate electricity.

Know how to communicate.

Know how to build something with your hands.

Competence is freedom.

8. Hope is bigger than optimism.

This one seems especially important to the First Turning.

Optimism says:

That's a much harder thing.

9. Redemption has to remain possible.

This applies to hackers, developers, companies, communities, and ourselves.

Accountability without redemption eventually becomes another form of authoritarianism.

10. The table is bigger than Bitcoin.

Bitcoin may be one of the instruments, but the project is ultimately about how humans might live together differently.

Permaculture.
Sovereign technology.
Distributed energy.

Local community.

Craft.
Spirituality.

Good food.
Children.
Land.

The questions before us are enormously important.

We have begun treating one another as though the future of Bitcoin depends on defeating the other side.

It does not.

The future of Bitcoin depends on whether we can remember why we built it in the first place.

Bitcoin was built for a world where people do not agree—and where no central authority gets to settle the disagreement for them.

That means this moment is not merely a technical dispute.

It is a test of whether we actually believe what we say we believe.

To those supporting BIP 110:

You have legitimate concerns.

Those concerns deserve to be heard.

But you are also responsible for the methods you choose.

Do not confuse urgency with righteousness. Do not treat disagreement as evidence of corruption. Do not assume that because someone reaches a different technical conclusion, they must secretly desire Bitcoin's failure.

And do not underestimate the damage caused when legitimate technical arguments become wrapped in tribalism, social pressure, or contempt.

You cannot build a decentralized future by demanding that everyone see the future exactly as you do.

To those opposing BIP 110:

You also have legitimate concerns.

Those concerns deserve to be heard too.

But you are also responsible for your methods.

Do not hide behind the word "consensus" when what you really mean is "the people who currently have influence agree with me."

Do not dismiss every proposed change as an attack on Bitcoin simply because it threatens an established equilibrium.

The BIP 110 controversy has exposed something uncomfortable:

We have proof of work and open-source software.

We have node operators scattered across the planet.

We have people who will defend this protocol with their livelihoods, reputations, and sometimes their lives.

And yet we are still remarkably willing to turn our fellow Bitcoiners into enemies.

That is unfinished work.

The disagreement doesn't matters.

The answer is not to force reconciliation by pretending everyone is equally correct.

Some technical proposals will be wrong. Some arguments will be wrong. Some people will act dishonestly. Some incentives really are corrupting. Some risks really are being underestimated.

We should say so plainly.

But accountability does not require hatred.

We need adversarial review without adversarial identity.

We need people who will try to break our ideas before reality does.

We need developers willing to say, "Your proposal is dangerous."

We need developers willing to say, "Your refusal to consider this possibility is dangerous."

We need node operators.

We need miners.

We need users.

We need skeptics.

We need radicals.

We need conservatives.

We need the person who has been running Bitcoin since 2011.

And we need the person who downloaded their first wallet yesterday.

The table must be larger than any faction.

This is the call of the First Turning.

The First Turning is not a victory of one tribe over another.

It is the turning away from the assumption that the only way forward is through domination.

We have spent enough time learning how to fight.

Now we must learn how to build.

There is a larger table.

That's the wrong question.

The question isn't, 'Which tribe should I join?' The question is, 'What's true?'

Don't hand your mind over to maintainers. Don't hand it over to influencers. Don't hand it over to the loudest voice on your feed. Use the mind God gave you. Read. Test. Verify.

Some of you want me to endorse your side so you can stop thinking. I'm not going to do that.

Truth doesn't become true because the majority believes it. And it doesn't become false because only a few can see it.

If Core is right on a matter, then follow what's right. If Knots is right on a matter, then follow what's right. If either one drifts from the truth, don't follow them there.

Some of you have made open-source projects into your identity. You defend your preferred implementation with more passion than you defend honesty, humility, or your neighbor.

You say, 'Don't trust. Verify.' That's a good principle. So live by it. Verify the code. Verify the claims. Verify your assumptions. And while you're at it, examine your own heart with the same rigor.

I'm talking about a word. Truth. Spoken out loud, in a room where everyone has agreed not to speak it. That's what I bring.

It will divide a household. I'm telling you this upfront, not as a threat but as a warning, because I respect you enough to be honest. When one person in a family wakes up and starts actually living this — loving the people society throws away, giving money away, refusing to hate the right enemies — the rest of the table is going to get uncomfortable. That's not my fault. That's just what light does in a dark room. People squint. Some of them get angry.

I'd been walking the shoulder of I-94 maybe forty minutes before I hit the exit. Trucks going past, that wall of air every time. You learn to read exits. This one had a certain quality. The kind of stop where people pull off without quite deciding to, where they're in between things. That's my territory.

Big place. Six diesel lanes. A Subway nobody was using. The light inside the color of a headache.

She was at the register. I knew her before I touched the door. Deborah. Deb. Forty-three years of running from something that wasn't even behind her anymore, which is the hardest kind of running to stop.

I asked about the wifi. She didn't look up. Told me I had to buy something first.

I said I wanted to ask her something.

I said — and I know how this sounds — "if you knew who you were talking to, you'd be asking me."

She thought that was strange. It is strange. I've had two thousand years with that line and it still doesn't land clean. But I said what I came to say. The three marriages. The man she was with now. I wasn't trying to humiliate her. I wanted her to understand that I already knew all of it and had walked through that door anyway. People think the knowing is the bad part. It isn't. The knowing is the whole point.

She went still. I've watched people go still like that more times than I can count. It's when the performance stops. When someone's been actually seen and they don't know yet whether that's safe.

She asked how I knew.

I let it go. The how doesn't matter.

Then she did the thing people do. She went theological on me. Started in about the right church, the right mountain, who's doing it correctly. It's not deflection exactly — or it is, but I don't hold it against anyone. Things get too close, you talk about doctrine. I've seen it a thousand times. I follow people into it. I don't mind.

I told her what I've always told people. The Father isn't running a bureaucracy. He's not checking credentials at a door. What he wants is just honesty. Actual honesty, from the inside. One person who stops pretending for five minutes, especially to themselves.

She went quiet again.

Then: "I've done a lot of things."

I said yes.

"Bad things."

Yes.

And then the question. The one that gets me every time, I don't care how many times I've heard it. She said: "so that's just... okay?"

The way she said it. The wanting in it. How badly people need someone to say yes, and how many people have told them yes in a way that meant nothing, and how many other people have handed them a pamphlet instead.

I didn't say yes. I told her it wasn't okay. Don't let anybody tell you the thing you did was fine, actually — that's not the offer. The offer is that it's forgivable. Those aren't the same word. One of them is a shrug. The other one cost something.

She looked at her wrist. Old tattoo. A cross. From a version of herself she'd written off.

She still had a shift to finish. I wasn't going to ask her to walk out. I don't blow up people's Tuesdays any more than necessary.

She asked what she was supposed to do now.

I thought about it. There's never just one answer. But there's usually one door.

"Call your sister," I said. "That's enough for now."

Then I left.

You say the thing and then you clear out. Give it room. That's something I've learned.

She called. Twelve missed calls she hadn't picked up. Her sister, who had not stopped trying. I put people like that everywhere. Ones who keep calling. Most people don't notice them.

She noticed.

That's all it ever takes. Just — notice.

The parking lot was bright and enormous and I had other exits to get to, other people pulled off in between things, and there was still a lot of afternoon left.
