It was pretty cool to see the comment cross-posted on the same track in Fountain, including the StableKraft link as well. This only happened with tracks that had a Fountain wallet in the album feed, so I'm guessing that had something to do with it, but I'm not sure. Maybe some other sorcery was at play 🧙‍♂️🪄🌟

That said, it could be a really interesting feature to see across all major apps. Comments are great promotion for artists, and having them follow album feeds in some way could increase creators' willingness to promote smaller apps as well.

I suspect many artists and podcasters are more likely to promote the app where comments, reactions, and zaps are visible if they're choosing between two apps of similar quality. If those interactions are visible everywhere, though, they might be more willing to direct people to the app with the better features, even if it's less well known. I could be wrong.

Great idea to have a toggle that lets people choose whether a comment is reposted to their profile.

I had no idea that the comments in the zaps were automatically published to my Nostr page. Maybe an idea to mention it on the zap popup. I'm fine with it and happy to promote, but others might see it differently. However, it would be pretty cool if the comments were published to StableKraft (I have additional inputs about that in the upcoming PM).

Totally understand what you're saying about CDNs. But that isn't what I'm talking about here. The whole Sunami page is very slow to load. Sometimes minutes. And sometimes it needs a couple of refreshes before it loads fully. I'm not sure why. Maybe it just me, but it's the same on all my computers (Linux and Windows). I've tried deleting site data, cache, etc. I just wanted you to know, if you weren't aware of it. However, if it's just me, then just ignore my comment.

Sounds very good that you do no processing. Neither does Fountain (they have a few other playback problems, especially when you use them in a browser instead of the phone app). And now StableKraft doesn't do processing either.

But you're touching on a pretty important topic.

Most people are not aware of it, but most legacy apps have a normalization feature to achieve what you're talking about. Among those who are aware of it, opinions are divided. Personally, I'm all for it when it's done right.

How Spotify does it:

First of all, it is non-destructive. In other words, they don't use traditional dynamic range compression (such as 12:1 compression). Instead, they measure the LUFS of the track (a simple explanation would be its "energy" or perceived loudness) and adjust all tracks up or down in volume to hit the same target level. Since they're only adjusting volume, they don't manipulate the sound itself. The result is essentially the same as you adjusting the volume on your playback device. The difference is that they do it automatically, so you can just enjoy the music at a consistent volume without having to do anything.

They aim for 14 LUFS and -1 dB true peak (where 0 dB is the maximum).

It works incredibly well.

If you play an album, it adjusts the album as a whole. That means you still get the intended album experience, where some tracks are played back louder than others, just as the producer intended.

If you play a playlist with random tracks, it adjusts the tracks individually to match the 14 LUFS target.

Eventually, I'm sure we'll see something similar in the Nostr/RSS space. But I have a feeling it will take a while before someone manages to implement it well.

It took me a couple of minutes to navigate to my artist page from the front page (tried on both laptop and studio PC). I will do a more thorough test when it's up and running as intended. Great that you're having a look at the search function too. It doesn't work at all for me.

Another question, do you apply any kind of processing to the audio before it reaches me, or is it my original file with zero additional changes to it? Maybe it's just my imagination, but it feels like the same release on Fountain sounds a little bit more "open". I'm not sure. Need to have a closer listen.

I'm just asking because I realized that the StableKraft app seems to do some severe (sound) compression of the sound, so apparently this is something to be aware of.

Yes, subscription software deals suck. They'd already been doing that for a while, and I wasn't pleased about it. But the final dealbreaker for me was when they revealed what they were really about and didn't allow graphic artists to use their products if they happened to live in the "wrong" country, because their government didn't agree with some other government.

That's when the "own nothing and be happy" agenda pulls off its mask and shows its ugly face.

I ended my subscription and never looked back. I miss nothing from Adobe.

To be clear, my original post was to understand how people in the community view this kind of activity. Nothing vague about that.

I want to understand whether this is a community I want to continue investing my time in. If the majority supports this behavior, I would rather step away. The only way to get a sense of that is to ask openly.

A post can be clear and still be misread when it isn’t fully engaged with.

There’s no need to revisit or debate what was said in the roundtable discussion. People can listen and draw their own conclusions, and hopefully they will, because it was an important conversation.

Right now I’m checking out the V4V Roundtable, and it seems that you have interpreted my post as support for this behavior, which is both surprising and disappointing.

As Matt points out, I want to understand people's opinions about this.

It is much easier to get an honest response by asking a fairly neutral question.

When I saw the pirate upload I’m commenting on, I was genuinely disappointed to see this happening in the Nostr space. I wanted to get a better understanding of whether I have been wasting my time investing so much in this community since I joined last year. I have no interest in building my presence in a piracy space.

If you had read my post carefully, it should have been clear that I do not support this behavior. A few of my comments would have made that even clearer.

Also, when I put a heart and a zap on your "Hard pass" repost two days ago, it should have been a pretty strong indication that we are on the same page.

I have been an active part of the international music scene since the '90s, with an extensive catalog and tours around the world. I have witnessed the dark side of being ripped off and watched much of the business collapse firsthand.

That makes it not only disappointing, but genuinely hurtful, to be labeled as supportive of something I have been struggling with for the past 25 years.

I’m curious what people here think about uploading other people’s music to Nostr, and even accepting zaps for it.

I just stumbled across a huge catalog that includes not only albums from artists I personally know, but also Metallica, Lady Gaga, Muse, Iron Maiden, and plenty more. According to Sunami (nprofile…va2w) and nostria (nprofile…m0xe), all of it was uploaded by Jay (nprofile…xp2j) (I don't know if that is true, or if your account has been compromised).

Is this something people actually support or appreciate?
Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

I can’t help but feel that many artists would see Nostr very differently once they discover this kind of thing happening here.

Top-of-the-list improvements for most apps right now are simply getting already existing features to work as frictionlessly and lightweight as possible.

For Sunami, that would be page load, search, and music playback.

Another huge improvement would be establishing a tight relationship with Nostria (the only other app I know of offering similar functionality) and agreeing on which standards need to be fulfilled for publishing tracks and albums. At the moment, there’s still some inconsistency.

I don’t know which app is most accurate, but it’s my impression that uploads from Nostria don’t function equally well in Sunami, and vice versa. For example, my first Sunami uploads didn’t show which album they belonged to on Nostria (in track view). Another example is that albums uploaded through Nostria show no artist name in Sunami. Also, tracks uploaded in Nostria don't show in the Tracks tab in Sunami (only in the Releases tab).

I’m sure there are other small details that could use some consistency as well, but I can’t remember them off the top of my head.

Since you and sondreb (nprofile…0ds9) of Nostria - Your Social Network (nprofile…r4un) are the pioneers in this area, whatever standards you agree on will more or less become the foundation future apps follow.

One really cool feature I’d love to see across all music apps is gapless playback, like Spotify has. When I make an album or EP, the pauses between songs aren’t intended to be random. Some tracks are designed to transition seamlessly into the next without the listener noticing. The same applies to live albums.

Neither native Nostr music apps nor RSS-based music apps (such as Fountain) handle this particularly well right now.

I can definitely see the challenge, since the files are scattered across different servers and relays. It would require preloading the upcoming track in the background while the current one is still playing.

The app that figures out how to solve this properly will probably become my go-to app 🙂 🎸

PS. I would suggest not making a one-click download feature. Some artists sell their audio files and it would probably not feel great for them.

I have no idea how many artists are in a similar situation, but most of the artists I know on legacy platforms, who own their material and already receive a decent amount of streams (like me, or far more), will be incredibly difficult to convince to consider the v4v space unless they see more direct rewards than “just” independence.

There’s a pretty steep barrier to entry if they have to learn everything we’re discussing right now, like self-hosting and running nodes. Most people don’t have that kind of time to spare unless they see fairly immediate benefits.

I agree that custodial wallets are a temporary solution, but I don’t feel comfortable if their websites use terms like “identity verification” or “KYC.” That's the exact mindset of the old world.

However, I firmly believe we’ll figure it out by working together and sharing ideas.

Looking forward to checking out that discussion. It definitely feels counterproductive for independent explorers to move toward centralized solutions. "Convenience" was always the carrot that led us astray in the legacy world.

It's actually a bit odd that none of the NWC alternatives support keysend. I'm no expert on the topic, but from what I can gather, it should be a fairly simple addition to the wallets that already exist, and an important one. Maybe the real issue is fear of being attacked by the legacy world, because with integrated keysend, we start becoming uncomfortably liberated. I have no idea, but very little surprises me these days.

Another topic that would be interesting to discuss is how to make the v4v model work better. As you know very well, it doesn't work great for music. Yes, we're still early, but I have a feeling that more time alone won't solve the challenge. At the moment, it's largely musicians supporting musicians. 🙂

If we want to bring more artists over from "the other side," it would help tremendously if we could also become a real alternative for people who are already getting streams from places like Spotify. Everyone knows they pay almost nothing, but I still make more from Spotify in one day than I do in the v4v space in a month.

I'm still investing a lot of time here because it makes so much sense, and I firmly believe this is where the future is headed. However, that belief alone won't make it an easy sell.

The solution is probably within our reach, even if it isn't clearly visible yet. It's great that this panel discussion will shine a light on some of our current challenges so the bright minds in this space can come together and brainstorm.

People here have tried nostr only, only to get back on their platform of choice. It's not time yet for people who are building to withdraw from other platforms. And if they do, that's a huge flex.

I'm romanticizing this way of social media use because I keep finding myself thinking in algo.

I have multiple personality disorder on the internet. Okay not really, but it's wild the thought process of making content for each app seen below.

So much of my thinking whether i like to admit it or not, comes down to thinking in how can I make a post to get this algo to serve my content.

I feel the pressure on Instagram to post consistently and am super conscious of "hooks". Even when making a story I'm conscious of if the first story will be hooky.

I know Youtube wants me to niche down so it can serve me to the people who would want to watch.

I somehow don't care at all who I am on tiktok, i'll just post with zero effort.

On Twitter I'm basically just a shill. I never come off the app feeling good about myself either.. in fact, i never come off any of the legacy social media apps feeling good about myself.

& on Nostr, well.. i'm definitely a shill, but also just posting what I feel like. It's made me rethink my behavior on other apps.

Attention is valuable. And one's ability to hack another's attention is an asset. It's all a game. The rules are written by black box algos programmed by corporate incentives. And the winners come home with status & potentially more sales. So one MUST PLAY if they need more status or sales. Simple.

What makes me upset is that these apps completely hack me almost every time i open them. And i know it doesn't have to be this way.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game". well.. we're creating a new game on Primal & so is the whole nostr ecosystem.

The Nostr Game

On Nostr, the apps talk together. Same paul, different layouts. Some apps show certain content, some do not.

Let's imagine the social media landscape today on a Nostr Standard. One ID for IG, TT, YT, X, Rumble and whatever else.\ \ It's no longer apps fighting for dwellers in their walled gardens, it's going to be a race to the top in terms of user experience and value for the creators.

Distribution is all any creator or brand wants. At the same time, I think more of us want to have more agency and control over their feeds.

If each app is sorting through the same information (content), there are no longer singular algorithms to game. Some apps may offer a crack algo, some may offer much more personalization and control. Without singular algos to try and game, a creator is left to do nothing but produce value to their audience.

We've only had a few corporate lenses through which we view the social media world. These corporate lenses have one incentive, to satisfy their shareholders. In a nostrified world, the power goes to the creators & consumers to choose which service best suits their needs. A plethora of business models would emerge instead of depenence on the ad model.

Would algothink actually turn in to valuethink? Would the apps the serve brainrot actually not be used? Would people be rewarded for their consistency or quality of their posts? Both? Not sure.

Authenticity

It's funny how you can feel when content was made for other apps and cross posted to nostr.

Why is that? Is it because nobody has a solid vertical scroll yet so it doesn't flow right quite yet in the feed? Or is it because there's no algo (yet) optimizing for eyeball staring. Better than eyeball staring, we have zaps which transmute digital scarcity (value) in return for the value someone provided.

Offline is the new luxury and being nostr only today is a status symbol.

We're only just figuring out how to interact with each other on the internet. It's brief history has been tainted by bad incentives and centralization.

Nostr is a part of "new earth" technology that people in my circles talk about. We need a reset or at least an option for those who care to stop fueling big tech with their every scroll.

Truth is, i have no idea how this plays out. I believe a healthy social media is attainable. That's the goal. And the interoperability nostr provides is imperative to keep a social media system accountable and to keep free speech alive.

As the meme in the title implies, humanity is messy so of course social media will be messy. There will be no perfect solutions.

What would i be posting in a world where we've already won? Probably just waves, family, and invitations to jungle shennanigans.

It's a long story, but the short version being; I was on the lookout for a Les Paul, and the Aria was hanging next to it, so I tried it out, and it just felt much better in my hand. It’s fair enough if people don’t find value in the music, but it’s definitely a discussion that deserves some attention.

I’m pretty sure most of us would like to see a more decentralized version of the world, but right now, I have to say that Spotify is unfortunately my most reliable source of income tied directly to music streaming. Yes, there are other ways to earn a living, like live shows, merchandise, or even selling hotdogs, but I’m old school and still believe that recorded music has its own value.

We have great potential here to make this space the independent and edgy alternative to Spotify, and a more successful version of Bandcamp. Without a better plan to make it happen, it will be difficult to convince newly onboarded artists not to lose interest after just a few months.

Whether it’s RSS music or native Nostr music, this is something that can bring more people into the space. It’s an exciting part of what’s being built here. But right now, there’s a clear gap in how it shows up.

When sharing music links, the result often isn’t very inviting. Previews are missing or inconsistent, and sometimes posts just look broken, with several lines of "link-text".

I’ve heard it works a bit better on some phone apps, and a couple of clients are already doing a pretty solid job (for example nostria (nprofile…m0xe) ). So this isn’t unsolved. It just isn’t consistent yet.

I mostly use Nostr on PC, so that’s where I’m coming from. I’m also not a developer, so I don’t see all the challenges behind the scenes. I guess a part of it is that things are still early. There doesn’t seem to be a simple, standard way to share a track or album from something like Fountain and know it will render well in most clients.

Same with native Nostr music. From a non-developer-musician perspective, it feels like this should be easier to get right, since the content is already in the ecosystem. In a dream situation, you could play it directly in the post, without jumping somewhere else ♪

Curious how others see this. Tips, ideas, or context from people closer to the technical side would be interesting to hear. And also from musicians and other music lovers.

Finding Home Episode 4 - "The Bittersweet Alchemist" was published today. The trip goes to London/Manchester and we get to meet Roger9000 (nprofile…acdf) and hear his interesting story (and pretty bizarre US experience).

With my new subscription, I also saw the pilot of "Finding Home" and got to meet Shakib in Harlem, New York. Great food in both episodes 🙂 Looking forward to check out the remaining parts 2 & 3.

I spent five days with Roger9000 (nprofile…2jjt) across London and Manchester. From the Bank of England to the Cyphermunk House. From a cold London pub to the neon heat of the Curry Mile. From a deportation story that'll make your blood run cold to a chocolate workshop that made a room full of kids sit still for an hour.

Roger is a musician, a chocolatier, and a man who was told by the state that he didn't belong. What he built in response is the whole episode.
