We made egpllant curry and vegan cookies for Ryan, and I keep fired up the grill for the carnivores. Ky is the fellow Ryan and I helped out last year get a tent and campground site for a while until the city could help him find a permanent home and a place to work. He posted up online that he had become homeless, so we helped out as much as possible.<br/><br/>Ky let me know that things haven&#39;t been easy. He lost cartilage in his knee, so he buckled over at work. He said he refused compensation because this was a long term issue for him. For that, his job got him off the floor and onto the phones, and now he&#39;s eligible for a raise. He said he met a friend who was also struggling to quit, but they can now call him to get talked out of it if they feel the urge. <br/><br/>I told him I was so proud, and this was something definitely worth celebrating. I let him know that my daughter had an extremely rough week, but the thought never even occurred to me to have a drink. So, hopefully it will be the same for them after enough time. <br/><br/>I said I hope he didn&#39;t mind that I shared his story online. His face lit up. I let him know there were a lot of people on here that are cheering him on, and I hope his story will inspire others like it does me. He was so, so happy. He said that was exactly what he needed to hear.<br/><br/>This sort of thing is so great. Ryan had been lonely, let down by people so much. This experience has been such a boost for all of us, and has made me proud of the city I live in. It&#39;s nice to know there are good people who help out a stranger in need. That&#39;s perfect.<br/><br/>Except, if you&#39;re going to do that, then you should probably understand the characters instead of shoehorning them into something entirely different.<br/><br/>It&#39;s like they went into some boardroom meeting and asked, &#34;So, who are these &#39;Green Lanters&#39; anyway?&#34; And someone said, &#34;Well Hal Jordan was chosen to be the Earth&#39;s and the galaxy&#39;s protector because he&#39;s a fearless test pilot. He&#39;s not afraid to take risks, and he doesn&#39;t care what people think about him, as long as there&#39;s peace in his sector. And John Stewart is his successor. He&#39;s a lot cooler, because he can do more with the ring. They&#39;re a lot alike, because they&#39;re both in the military, and John is also fearless.&#34;<br/><br/>And that&#39;s all the information they got, and they ran with that, missing all the nuances and important details. The show states clearly that what makes a Lanters is having no fear. Being fearless doesn&#39;t make a good cop. It makes a cop careless and dangerous. If they wanted to make a show about a hero without fear, that&#39;s for Daredevil, not The Green Lantern. <br/><br/>Hal Jordan was chosen, because of his conviction, because in his heart, he deeply felt that doing the right thing is better than being afraid of the consequences. He&#39;s cocky, self-assured, and takes risks that avoid bureaucracy, not because he never faces any consequences, and not because he doesn&#39;t experience fear. It&#39;s because fear doesn&#39;t get in his way. An alien died in his arms, and he was picked out of all the people on the planet, because of his conviction, and quick thinking. <br/><br/>John Stewart was an architect. He served in the military as a sniper in some iterations, but he always studied architecture. He designed and built things. Being an architect, he had the creative mind to fabricate objects that Hal Jordan could never imagine. This does not translate into a fearless sniper that follows orders, does what he&#39;s told, keeps his head down and mouth shut, doesn&#39;t drink, takes his coffee decaf, is a vegan, and puts up with too much bullshit, waiting patiently for his turn. It&#39;s too much, and none of it makes any sense.<br/><br/>Also, the first episode shows that Hal Jordan dies. I guess we were supposed to be surprised by this. I wasn&#39;t. I didn&#39;t care. Wouldn&#39;t it have been cool if Hal died in his John&#39;s arms, recalling The Green Lantern origin story? <br/><br/>There&#39;s no chance that a person who has been shot at by his own father, who has been trained to murder other people with a sniper rifle, who does not ever experience fear, would make a good intergalactic peacekeeper. It makes no sense why a person like that would have any ethics, morals, or creativity. It makes no sense why anyone would ever appreciate Hal Jordan. John says he respects him, but why? He&#39;s just a famous and powerful douchebag putting him through hell out of contempt and jealousy.<br/><br/>Cocky and self-assured doesn&#39;t equate to putting people&#39;s lives in danger, and constantly being a giant asshole to everyone, and then facing zero consequences.. for no reason. It&#39;d be one thing if John recognized it as PTSD, but that probably wouldn&#39;t be &#34;cool&#34; for these writers.<br/><br/>If this were a spin-off of True Detective with some sci-fi elements, I&#39;d love this. It wouldn&#39;t bother me so much that the jokes don&#39;t land, the dialogue is clunky, and none of the behaviors make much sense. It&#39;d be a fun crime show, if it didn&#39;t shit all over the history of the characters that the show is supposed to be about. <br/><br/>I&#39;m sick of seeing Superhero shows being written by people who don&#39;t like superheroes.
