My framing is stark and very binary because I am reacting to Stock's generalizations about autistic people. But yes, many neurotypicals can think too. But there is plenty of evidence that NT folk struggle a little bit more to separate intellectual understanding from social considerations.

There was a study of ethical behavior in people. It turned out autistic people applied ethical principles more rigidly. The presumably neurotypical researchers concluded autistic people "lacked" the moral flexibility of their NT peers!

Autistic people are more likely to be LGBTQIA+, and a leading theory for why is that autistics feel less bound by social consensus.

The two groups overlap just like the height ranges of men and women overlap, but we can still talk about the average height of each group.

Going back to the Victorian example, I imagine some of the loudest people rejecting pain relief were autistic religious people. I also imagine those autistics carried on howling long after everyone else agreed to not think about the issue any more. I am sure the Victorian Stocks told those autistics they were taking their reasoning "too far".

Those autistic headbangers could only shut up about the pain thing by reevaluating their whole moral framework. The neurotypical headbangers could just decide the pain thing wasn't important after all and they weren't going to think about it any more.

Autism isn't intrinsically "more right" than neurotypicality, but does seem to have more emphasis on consistency.

James Simpson invented the use of chloroform for pain relief in childbirth in 1847. The religious authorities of the UK were outraged, as the bible clearly says god cursed women to painful childbirth. Pain relief was heresy! Simpson received death threats and chloroform was considered socially unacceptable for years, until queen Victoria availed herself of the technique.

The religious argument was never resolved. Society simply decided it couldn't deal with the contradiction of the the church's holy book saying pain was a religious duty, and the head of the church choosing pain relief. So it became a non-issue.

I don't think people confronted their moral objections and decided that biblical literalism was harmful. Instead, part of their religious framework became too problematic, so it was simply reclassified as "wasn't important / don't think about it". Thereby enabling the rest of the biblical literalism to retain its ideological dominance.

This is neurotypical ethics.

Of all the letters in LGBTQI, I think Intersex people are unique in that we often get added to the rainbow by society as soon as we are born, and unlike other queer people, our families often "know" about us long before we do.

There is a conspiracy of silence to stop intersex kids from knowing about themselves. The reason "normalizing" surgery is done early in life is precisely because the event will not be remembered. In my case, my earliest memory is recovering from such surgery. It took decades to understand what that fragmentary memory was.

Unlike the other letters of LGBTQI, intersex conditions often come with significant medical concerns. Amongst other issues, I had an endocrine crisis leading to severe arthritis in my early years. But my doctors were so intent on bolstering my normalized identity, they could not acknowledge or treat the problem. Ultimately, I accidentally fixed myself by starting hormone therapy as part of gender affirming care.

The origin of this medical and social control is the 1950s era anxiety that if the child has an "abnormal" body, they will grow up gay. As bizarre as it may seem, the pathologization of intersex and the resulting nonconsensual and deceptive treatments are a form of "queer prevention" therapy.

Intersex pride is about acknowledging that bodily diversity is the real normal. Intersex pride is about demanding treatment for the real health issues and an end for nonconsensual cosmetic treatments. Intersex pride is about resisting the identity policing and secrecy that society deems "good for us".

This thread made me reconsider my terminology. When I transitioned in the nineties, I was a transsexual. I transitioned, and got away from trans and got on with my life. Trans was something you did and forgot about. In no way did I pass perfectly. I was nonbinary and didn't have a name for it. I felt I had failed in some way. I didn't have anything to offer the trans community. I didn't even know there was a trans community.

My partner would sometimes ask me "Why don't you follow any trans people online?" And I would reply "Why would I do that?"

That changed with the rise of organized transphobia. Being loudly trans was important, and it seemed that now being trans wasn't just something you did, it was something you always are.

Emerging from my time capsule, I was confused that people were transgender now... Transsexual was a slur! I found that a bit offensive. I had wanted to change my body, and gender had just been an obstacle course thrown in my way. At no point was I transing my gender.

Tattie (npub1qyr…refj) reminded me of the other side of the label. How important it was for us transsexuals to not be seen as sketchy transvestites. The community was divided by the two labels. The transvestites were given shame, and the transexuals were policed with a shameful example to avoid.

It is a very delayed realization, but I see why we moved on from the transsexual terminology.

I am getting an "All people's lives matter" vibe from some of the answers. Yes you can't force anyone to live their life in a particular way, but women face SPECIFIC issues in this regard. There is no male equivalent of what is happening right now to women in countries like Afghanistan. Men are not directly affected by the abortion bans spreading over the USA. There is a bit of noise at the moment about "AI-induced psychosis", and as someone who has had a long history of distorted thinking and outright psychosis, I want to say this just seems like hype and misunderstanding to me.

Firstly, psychosis is a very common condition, and lots of people get it all the time. There is no dividing line between being sane and being psychotic - many everyday experiences like religion or superstition have psychotic features. Many sane people also hear voices, they're just not bothered by them.

Secondly, sane, controlled people go psychotic out of the blue. You are not necessarily acting weird before you lose it completely. I went from competent and capable to disoriented and incomprehensible overnight - in the eyes of other people. I didn't get "induced" by an single thing like AI, I simply slowly diverged from the way others were percieving the world (seeing "clues" here and there that led me further down my rabbit hole) and eventually reached a point at which I could not mask my fears any more. It was only at the point where I could not mask any more that people thought I had "gone psychotic".

Thirdly, when you are psychotic you get messages from all sorts of innocuous sources, often the TV or radio. In my case, I was getting messages from drain covers. No, my psychosis was not "drain cover-induced".

If AI tells you it is god and you are the chosen one, and that seems like a reasonable proposition, you are already psychotic. If you are psychotic and you interact with AI, but also with anything else in the world, it is very likely to be incorporated into your delusion. There is no way to design AI to be psychosis-safe, because psychosis is a total distortion of reality - everything is recruited to support the delusion.
