That narrow range of tones for the background and leaves still works incredibly well because you&#39;ve alternated warm and cool colors. And then you have that much brighter area between the cardinals, as well as a few pops of brightness around the nest.<br/><br/>It&#39;s not just the red of the cardinals that draws your eye, the whole background pushes your eye back to them. Some of my first projects carving wood blocks were very frustrating because the wood I was using was very soft with a loose grain, and it splintered constantly.<br/><br/>Harder wood (Cherry or boxwood are probably the best, but are difficult to find and very expensive) is much better for fine detail.
