Spent the day atop a ladder again, trying to get out of the RF hole we are in and get connected to #Meshtastic locally but even with this ridiculous setup the best I could do is a horribly degraded connection to a single node - not a single message made it out to LongFast. This was the last attempt with the rooftop. May try again with the node put on top of a tree but I am very close to giving up.

No, Meshcore won't solve this issue.

###

.:: APT 77 INCIDENT REPORT ::.This evening around 1772828043 the threat actors known as #APT77 aka #FluffyRodent aka #t34md3gu have breached containment.

While APT77 were engaged in their routine evening check of /var/run which is carried out with escalated privileges and outside of their usual jail environment, due to human error, a critical port was left open for egress and ingress in the production environment. Utilising the breached door(8) Agent R and Agent F both escaped containment.

The discovery was quick and incident response was rapid. Fortunately, after lessons learned from the last incident, the bathroom shower tray fascia has been patched, and upgrades to the general tidiness of the upstairs corridor were actioned. This meant that it was much harder for APT77 to establish persistence, although attempts were made to do so, by hiding under a small console table.

In the immediate aftermath Agent R has taken to run in the wheel in their jail environment, and Agent R, sitting on top of /var/log has been issuing kill -SIGALRM commands repeatedly, but has now settled down after the episode.

APT77 have now resumed their evening check of /var/run, albeit, with continued port scanning activity targeted at the previously discovered security holes.

#degucontent

I think that in about a year, bit by bit I completely managed to come off Big Tech. Here's how:

1. A big part of it was signing up with LAYLO (npub1kf2…q7ea) who provide my email and calendars (yes I also have a copy of Run Your Own Mailserver but I am yet to find the time and honestly LAYLO are excellent value for money). So that's official bits taken care of.

2. Messaging - to be honest I wish more of my contacts used it but now I operate on a Signal (npub1rkw…5q62) - first policy. Everything else is either deemed unimportant or a last resort.

3. MacOS was replaced basically with OpenBSD and iOS with GrapheneOS (npub1kwa…e0nj). I still have a Mac but I only use it for very specific things now. Daily drivers are OpenBSD on my old Macbook and on the Thinksomething desktop.

4. iCloud - instead of handing sensitive correspondence and documents to the UK govt via Apple or some other sociopathic company's computers, I sync directly across my own devices using [@syncthing](https://hachyderm.io/@syncthing ) but e.g. for photo storage I am still in the process of getting Ente to work. I am also building a NAS when I have the spare cash / get that old laptop motherboard to cooperate.

5. Search - Kagi HQ (npub1zq5…dlp2)

6. Maps (navigation) - MagicEarth

7. Music - I tried smaller streaming services but finally went back to listening to FLAC CD rips and Bandcamp downloads, streamed from Gonic (subsonic implementation) running on my desktop at home, to my mobile running Tempus. I haven't got a very fast connection at home but I am surprised how well this works regardless. Even on-the-fly transcoding to 320kbs mp3 works marvellously well and so I don't use up all my data allowance with streaming in FLAC.

8. The magic glue that binds this all together is Tailscale. None of my service endpoints are exposed to the public internet. Helps me keep ssh bruteforcers and other nasties away.

There are two outstanding services:

- Location Sharing - we rely on this in the family from time to time, and after I had luggage stolen on the train once by some local louts, I bought a small fleet of AirTags which are pretty much useless now under Android.
- Contactless Payments - i just need to carry my wallet again, so this isn't a HUGE issue. The most used workaround for GrapheneOS would have been to sign up for Curve, but for whatever reason they bounced back my application. Pretty annoyed that they gave zero feedback as to why, support was entirely unhelpful. Apparently they did so because "security". OK. I didn't really like the idea of yet another bank anyway.

OK here's a theory: #ChatGPT's #Atlas browser is not a really browser but fact a way for OpenAI to circumvent scrape blockers. It's more a distributed human-based scraper rather than anything else.

Given how widely loathed AI and how damaging AI scrapers have become #OpenAI's IP ranges ended up in quite a lot of block lists, many servers outright terminate any connection to them. Then there are things like #Anubis or #Iocaine that further frustrate #LLM scraping.

But what if you DIDN'T neeed to bother about all that? What if you could use civilian IP addresses with "organic" traffic patterns, and have humans solve Captchas, provide proof of work for Anubis, or get around Iocaine? All this for free -- you don't even need to pay people for it?

I would be REALLY interested to see what telemetry Atlas sends back. 100% certain it will send back things like URL and rendered HTML output, possibly user interaction patterns ("a normal human on this website moves their mouse first to the 'I am not a bot' captcha then clicks it). They do not have to respect robots.txt because, well, it comes from organic visitors...

Am I crazy?

EDIT: And what do you know?! I was correct. https://tldr.nettime.org/@remixtures/115419472139725665

Gonna get real about #OpenBSD. I don't like the puffy logo. Something about the anthropomorphised face. Just not my vibe.

The 386 laptop I bought turned out to be a late and relatively obscure #Amstrad ANB 386SX20. However to my BIG disappointment it came basically gutted. Too bad because the notebook is really really nice. No PSU - I knew that - but there was also no FDD, no HDD, no modem. Also I think a chip is missing and I don't know what it could have been.

My hunch is this laptop died a mysterious death, whatever could be salvaged from it was sold off, and decades later someone sold off what remained.

A real pity. I was REALLY looking forward to getting back on a 386.

#retrocomputing #dos

> Due to the hobbyist nature of the network, any privacy between the sender and recipient was only the result of politeness from the owners of the FidoNet systems involved in the mail's transfer. It was common, however, for system operators to reserve the right to review the content of mail that passed through their system.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.

Apart from very few exceptions like Tuta (npub1tk7…0m5c), today's email privacy is as much a matter of trust as it was in the case of FidoNet messages in the 1980's. Except, unlike your friendly neighbourhood sysop who routed your messages at 4am at his own cost, the people with access to your mail are certifiable sociopaths high on AI tokens.
