Linkdump No 130

So this week we had an internet-breaking PHP vulnerability AND an internet-breaking TLS certificate disaster. I'm glad I am not an IT admin, because I can only imagine the amount of stress this has caused in certain areas. This website here wasn't affected though, because it's just a bunch of HTML files in a folder. And because no sensitive information is collected or delivered, TLS is also optional and the site works over plain http too. Simplicity ftw!
Articles
Will Linux phones become a viable alternative to the Android/iOS duopoly?
This is a deeeep dive into the topic of Linux on mobile phones. I haven't read it in full yet because it's long, but it sounds interesting and I hope the answer to the headline isn't the usual "no". (via The Privacy Dad)
Software/Services
GitHub - szabadkai/c64-keyboard-font: Photo-based reconstruction of classic Commodore 64 keycap lettering, with desktop fonts, webfont, editable outlines, and a specimen. · GitHub
If you want to give your blog a new look, here's the font that's printed on the C64s keys, including the petscii characters. It's all uppercase though, SO MAYBE DON'T WRITE AN ENTIRE POST WITH IT...
Hardware Projects
Sprout Pi Mainboard | Crowd Supply
This is pretty awesome - a new mainboard for old iPods that modernises the device with bluetooth, wifi, USB-C and an SD-card slot. And of course new firmware to make it all work. For now it's "coming soon", but I hope it won't be too expensive. And I hope we'll see more projects like this in the future.
Videos
What Happened to Borland? - YouTube
The first programming language I learned to use (at least a little bit) was Borland Turbo Pascal in school, so watching this was somewhat nostalgic for me.
Around the Small Web
Quxnet Is a Breath of Fresh Air | moddedbear.com
JP talks about a new service called Quxnet, which I haven't tried yet, but it sounds a bit like old school myspace. I'm not much of a social network person, but maybe I'll give it a try... if you're on there, let me know!
Damage Control — fireborn
Here's what happens when you report a bug to Google. They ignore you until you make a public fuss about it. Then all of a sudden they profusely apologise - but: "A team doesn't go from "outside our scope" to a sincere apology and "you were entirely right" in under 48 hours because it reread an email it had already read five times. It does it because somebody further up noticed the noise. This is damage control. And damage control is about the damage to the company's reputation, not the damage to the users."
Solene'% : Expose only share links of a private service with caddy
If you occasionally want to share something on your homelab with a friend without inviting the entire world into your network in the process, this might be interesting to you.
Building a Personal Archive With Hoarder - Brainsteam
I mentioned Readeck last week, and I was sent this post about how to build your personal archive via mail, so I thought I'd pass it on. (Thanks, Christoph)

http://82mhz.net/posts/2026/10/linkdump-no-130/

#damage #tls #control #linux #borland #personalarchive #quxnet #privacydad #mainboard #crowdsupply

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit
